Necromancer Academy’s Genius Summoner – 372

Chapter 372
Simon and Chatelle dressed for battle stepped into the center of the arena.
From where he stood Simon inspected his opponent.
‘What immense pressure.’
A giant.
What could describe Chatelle better than that?
With a height over three meters—it was possible closer to four—he seemed to have kept growing even after joining Kizen.
In addition to that his light gray skin thick eyebrows and piercing eyes…
It really felt like a statue of a giant was towering over Simon. The man’s shadow alone seemed to cover the entire arena.
An opponent who was not even the same species. It didn’t feel like he was fighting a fellow first-year.
“Please shake hands.”
At the referee’s instruction Simon had to list his arm over his head while Chatelle crouched. They grabbed each other’s hands.
“Good luck to both of us Chatelle.”
“…”
“It’s our first time since the BDMAT.”
“…”
“Oh by the way why did you select me as your opponent?”
“…”
Simon made an awkward smile.
‘Is he unable to speak?’
At the referee’s next instruction the two walked a set distance apart.
“Go Chatelle!”
“I’m counting on you for another intense match!”
“Do your best~ Simon!”
The cheers for both were evenly split among the audience.
Chatelle was favored not only by the more aggressive students but also by seniors due to his heavy combat style and tendency to turn his duel opponent into a bloody pulp. It was reminiscent of the bloody spectacles sought out in classic colosseum battles.

Simon’s supporters instead admired his remarkable growth speed geniusness and quality as a star. In particular there were many female students cheering loudly for him.
“Simon! Do your best!”
Camibarez and Rick held up their placards and cheered enthusiastically as well. When Benya was clapping her hands someone from behind jumped over and crossed toward them.
“Yes! An empty seat!”
Rick turned his head to see the girl sitting down next to him.
A girl with twin tails wearing a white navy jacket draped over her shoulders… It was the famous S.A.7.
“Elissa Seline!”
“Hm?”
Spotting Rick she frowned in displeasure.
“Who do you think you are? Why is a nobody like you acting so friendly with me?”
Rick leaned back in shock putting a hand over his heart at her sharp remark.
Meanwhile Elissa covered her mouth and laughed.
“I’m just joking. Rick Hayward… How could I not know the son of the White Cow merchant association?”
“Oh.”
Only then did Rick regain his confidence his regular smugness plastered all over his face.
Elissa’s gaze shifted to the side.
“That’s Camibarez from the Ursula family and next to her is… Ah!”
Elissa stood up placed her hand on her chest and bowed her head.
“Senior Benya Vanilla a pleasure to meet you. My name is Elissa Seline.”
“Hello~”
Benya waved her hand cheerfully.
Seated in the middle Camibarez looked at Elissa with a somewhat surprised expression.
The lady was much more polite and friendly than the rumors.
“As expected from a politician.”
Smirked Rick with a knowing look.
“Ah yes merchant.”
Replied Elissa without giving an inch. Then she sat down with her knees together and looked around.
“By the way weren’t you guys in a group of four? Where’s that annoying blue-haired one?”
Camibarez answered
“Meilyn is getting ready for her match in Arena 3.”
“Oh~ so the fights overlap. Too bad. I wanted to see her get destroyed by Serene.”
[Now we will begin the Duel Evaluation between Class A’s Simon Polentia and Class I’s Chatelle Maerre!]
Waaaaaaaaaaah!
The big match finally began. Cheers erupted from all sides as the two boys took up their fighting stances.
“Yeah do your best Simon! Knock Chatelle down in one punch and move up to the second year!”
“Simon~ Get killed!”
Hearing the cheer no jeer Rick turned to Elissa.

‘Not kill him but get killed?’
“Slip and smash your head and end up in the ward! Go Chatelle! Don’t hold back just because he’s S.A.1!”
“…Why don’t you just cast a curse at him?”
Rick let out a feigned smile. Camibarez couldn’t hold back and said
“R-Right! You should cheer for the one you like! It’s bad to jeer at someone!”
“I don’t wanna~ It’s my choice! Go to hell Simon!”
Elissa was less a Chatelle supporter and more a Simon hater.
After all she had suffered enough being involved with and overshadowed by Simon test after test.
And meanwhile…
‘Let’s focus.’
Simon in the arena was facing this immense pressure.
Just standing within a few meters of the giant made his hairs stand on end and cold sweat ran down his back.
“Are both of you ready?”
Simon and Chatelle nodded.
With one last confirmation the referee lowered his arm and declared
“Begin the duel!”
Screeeeeeeaaaaaaak!
As the duel began a piercing noise filled the arena causing the audience to cover their ears.
‘Urk.’
Simon also grimaced as he looked ahead. A massive magic circle formed in front of Chatelle.
Black needles whirled around completing the magic circle. Simon immediately recognized what spell that was.
‘Domain Reversal.’
Chatelle’s signature dark spell.
Simon had briefly faced it during the third ocean-themed BDMAT.
A powerful jet-black earth spell that turns the island’s soil and rocks into projectiles at the caster’s will. It was far beyond a first-year’s level.
‘I really want to stop that.’
Confident in his combat dark magic Simon bent his knees and was about to charge in.
However…
‘What do I do after getting close?’
A simulation played out in Simon’s mind.
His mind split into five images each trying different ways to engage Chatelle but every scenario ended with him being knocked away by Chatelle’s massive fists.
‘I don’t know where to start.’
Chatelle’s fists were raised in an ideal fighting stance his eyes gleaming and alert. One clean hit from those massive fists could cut his barrier gauge down considerably.
Displaying such a huge magic circle so openly was a sign of confidence.
Simon figured that preparing his own spells and engaging in an arms race was more reasonable than rashly charging in to stop the Domain Reversal.
‘Stay calm.’
Simon drew a circle on his right the magic circle for blood golem so he could build up to his ‘Royal Bodyguards’.
And with his other hand he opened his subspace.
[Here I am!]
He took out the hidden weapon and secret card of today’s duel. ‘Herseva’.
“Oh! He’s holding a staff?”
“That’s unexpected. I heard he’s good at combat dark magic so isn’t a staff a disadvantage?”
Simon let the audience’s chatter go in through one ear and out the other remaining focused.
[Hey! Did you hear that? They called me a disadvantage!]
‘Don’t mind them Herseva.’
Soon everyone here was going to tremble at Herseva’s power.
But before that…
‘I want to stop him completing Domain Reversal!’
Simon summoned eight skeleton mages from his subspace and brought them into the arena.
“Dark Blaze!”
As Simon swung his staff down like a general ordering his soldiers to charge the skeletons reached their staves out and conjured magic circles as if copying Simon.
Fwoooooooooosh!
Instantly eight fireballs formed spewing dark smoke as they shot forward.
In response Chatelle stepped forward shield his magic circle with his own body.
Booooom…!
The intense heat and aftershock of the explosion reached all the way back to Simon.
Simon frowned.
‘He’s really blocking my attack with his body?’
Chatelle’s blessed body couldn’t be injured by weapons like swords or arrows.
But this was still a duel evaluation and he was wearing a barrier suit. The rules had it that you lost when your barrier gauge hit zero which was Chatelle’s only handicap.
But as the smoke cleared…
“Waaaaaaaah!”
“As expected from Chatelle!”
The giant stood tall unscathed.
Simon quickly checked the screen but Chatelle’s barrier gauge was still at 100%. On closer inspection he saw a thin layer of jet-black surrounding Chatelle’s body.
‘It’s a skill I saw in the midterms Jet-Black Film.’
Though it was a simple dark spell using basic principles where one covered their body in jet-black it consumed a lot of jet-black and required constant focus every time you moved making it highly difficult to execute.
Regardless Chatelle had covered his suit with the Jet-Black Film reproducing his formidable defense. Ordinary attacks wouldn’t work on him.
‘Then here goes nothing!’
The mages returned and this time skeleton archers popped out from the subspace.
“All of you fire!”
Pshk! Pshk!
Jet-black-enchanted arrows would likely be more effective than simple firepower against a full-body Jet-Black Film.
But Chatelle watched the arrows closely precisely timing and positioning parts of the Film to thicken in order to block them.
He was already quite skilled in managing the Film.
Then Chatelle clapped his palms together.
Screeeeeeeaaaaaaak!
The noise from the start of the duel now accompanied the completion of the magic circle. Chatelle placed it on the ground and stomped down on it.
{Domain Reversal}
Whoooooooooooosh!
It had begun.
The influence of the magic circle spread turning the arena black. Simon looked around feeling like he had entered a world within an ink painting.
“!”
Shadows fell around him. When he looked up a neatly cut square fragment of the arena floor was falling from the sky.
Thuuuuud!
Simon quickly stepped back to dodge it. Looking around he saw the ground next to Chatelle was empty.
“The Domain Reversal is complete!”
“Kill him!”
Shouted the excited Chatelle fans.
Every time Chatelle raised his arms more and more inky black tiles floated into the air.
And then they fell.
‘Kugh!’
Simon ran frantically his legs gushing with jet-black.
It wasn’t just about launching fragments. Chatelle’s jet-black made the projectiles stronger tougher and even more unpredictable with how they moved. It was impossible to deflect or destroy them mid-air.
Slam! Crush! Bang!
Although Simon’s evasive maneuvers having solid fundamentals to work off of were impressive Chatelle’s Domain Reversal kept expanding in range meaning the number and size of projectiles only increased.
[Kid! Behind you!]
‘Got it!’
Simon tried to dodge the chunk flying from behind but…
Fwip!
Suddenly the ground under his feet pulled open making him lose balance. The Domain Reversal didn’t even allow Simon to walk safely.
‘Crap!’
This was jet-black earth magic. The entire ground became his enemy.
Whoooooosh!
Then a massive rock over 10 meters wide was flying toward Simon as he fell. The spectators stood up eager to witness the decisive moment.
‘Let’s go Herseva.’
[Okay!]
Swish!
Simon fixed his grip on his staff and thrust it towards the incoming boulder.
‘Herseva’s Touch!’
[Herseva’s Touch!]
Ting!
Then something amazing happened.
The boulder that touched the staff turned entirely to gold before shattering into dust.
Glittering gold dust flew past ruffling Simon’s hair.
“Woah!”
“What was that?!”
The spectators and even Chatelle looked shocked for the first time.
The biggest strengths of Chatelle’s Domain Reversal were range and strength.
But his attacks turned to gold and shattered the moment they touched the staff.
Swirl…
Twirling freely in Simon’s right hand the staff stopped in front of his chest.
“I’m really sorry but…”
Simon’s eyes flashed.
“You seem to have a bad matchup against me Chatelle.”
Before anyone knew it Simon’s arms had been wrapped in gold and black bandages that went over his suit like clothing.
As Simon loosened his grip on the staff it plunged itself into the ground.
The blackness that engulfed the arena from the Domain Reversal began to change to a thick gold.
‘Come forth mummies.’
