    Chapter 357

A wave of shock struck the crowd at Simon’s declaration.

“We are not trash dear judges.”

The audience cheered as soon as he finished his sentence and the judges left their seats with reddened faces.

“I’m seeing you in a new light Kizen!”

    “That was so satisfying!”

“Sorry about yesterday. You really are something else.”

Even the students expressed their gratitude.

Simon was a bit overwhelmed by the crowd but he accepted them with a smile.

“Thank you thank you so much Simon! I was wrong about you!”

In particular Benz from Alland followed Simon to the end and shouted after him enthusiastically. As he received such warm praise Simon went down the stairs.

    “Oh my…”

However in the hallway leading out of the presentation hall Serene stood with her arms crossed. Benz who was still following Simmon reflexively flinched.

“Wasn’t avoiding making enemies your principle Simon?”

    “…”

“There was no need for you to say such things for those people.”

Said Serene looking Benz up and down.

    Benz’ expression fell sullen.

“Your thesis was the only one chosen by the judges Simon. The most spectacular scene for you would have been trampling those fools and gaining recognition at Pentamonium. Why did you do something that wouldn’t benefit you?”

Then the voice of the student council president he met yesterday echoed in Simon’s ears.

“Don’t let others lead your life and live with a passionate heart and big dreams!”

“I didn’t turn to cold logic for what I should do.”

Simon smiled faintly. What he did wasn’t for the students nor was it for personal gain.

“I was just honest with my feelings at that moment.”

    “Hmm~”

    Serene made a meaningful smile.

Suddenly Kajann’s voice came from above them.

    “Hello.”

When Simon looked up Kajann who was clinging to the ceiling like a bat dropped down beside him.

    “Whoa! What the?!”

Yelped Benz in surprise falling on his butt.

“Kajann what were you doing up there?”

“It’s just part of my exercise. Let’s go.”

The two left with Simon between them. Benz and the students watched Simon’s back with mixed feelings.

    * * *

The incident where a first-year student from Kizen embarrassed the elderly judges during his student-thesis presentation spread quickly throughout Pentamonium.

Interestingly very few were taken aback by a student being so brazen to their senior. Instead most necromancers found the new topic amusing.

And as Simon initially planned he registered his thesis ‘Using ‘Corpse Explosion’ with a skeleton mage’ for auction at Pentamonium.

The processing which could take weeks if not longer due to delays was unexpectedly completed in two hours and immediately went up for auction. Kajann said it seemed like the higher-ups of Pentamonium had gotten directly involved.

“Didn’t I put a target on my back for the higher-ups?”

    Kajann shook his head.

“The rumors spread faster than we thought. Pentamonium isn’t foolish enough to cover up for a few judges if it risks staining their entire reputation. They’d like to use this situation to their advantage.”

“Right. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise~”

Said Serene with a smile. Earlier she had given Simon a mouthful about doing something that wouldn’t benefit him but judging by her face it seemed she had anticipated this outcome from the start.

It was clear that Simon’s actions had become a big issue.

The rumors also often mentioned the exact thesis he had written leading to not only the central auction house getting filled but even two side ones.

Simon watched from the audience with Serene and Kajann.

Although it was called an auction what was being sold wasn’t anything physical but knowledge. Simply put Simon would receive money in exchange for sharing his ‘original’ with others.

Additionally since Simon officially registered his thesis with Pentamonium he’d receive royalties when other necromancers produced new results based on his research. Whatever happens he would end up sitting on a pile of money if everything went well.

    Simon looked at the auctioneer.

“We will start at 5000 gold.”

The starting amount already exceeded the target Simon had in mind.

    Simon bit his thumb nervously.

‘…Isn’t that too high? What if no one bids at 5000 gold?’

As he glances around gnawing at his nail in stress the auctioneer finally declared the beginning of the auction. Bids came in immediately.

    “5000 gold!

    “5500!”

    The numbers quickly started rising.

Every time someone’s hand went up Simon wriggled with excitement. Every single person participating in this auction recognized the value of his research.

The amount quickly surpassed 6000 and 7000 and eventually…

“10000 gold! Anyone bidding more than 10000 gold?”

It didn’t even take a minute to reach 10000. And the hands did not slow down.

    “15000 gold!”

    “16000!”

More than three times the original target of 5000 gold. Simon decided to stop thinking.

    “18000!”

    “20000!”

The money only kept climbing faster and faster until eventually…

“30000 gold! Going once! Going twice! And… sold! Congratulations Sir Boloure!”

Applause erupted. The man named Boloure stood up and raised his arms in joy.

    “…”

And Simon pinched his cheek dumbfounded.

    It hurt.

    So it wasn’t a dream…

    ‘A whopping 30000 gold!’

If Simon had no ambition at all this amount would be enough to live comfortably in the mountains for the rest of his life.

‘It’s just a skeleton mage capable of using Corpse Explosion. Was my research really that valuable?’

    He was a bit flabbergasted.

He had come to find funds for the lich’s Life Vessel but with this much he could get the highest quality heart possible.

    “Congratulations Simon!”

    “Congratulations!”

Serene and Kajann also congratulated him. Serene in particular shook Simon’s arm and nestled herself into his side.

“You’ve made a lot of money so buy us something delicious!”

    “Oh yeah! Of course.”

He felt like ringing the golden bell at an expensive restaurant.

But before going to eat something delicious there was something he had to do. Simon immediately went to meet Boloure the buyer as requested by the auction house.

The two sat facing each other in an incredibly luxurious room.

“I wanted to meet you Simon Polentia!”

Count Boloure with his impressive split mustache ruled the volcanic territory of ‘Clonmel’ in the kingdom and was also a necromancer.

His territory Clonmel was frequently attacked by monsters so he had received permission from the royal family to own a private necromancer army. However it was still difficult to fend off all the attacks.

He decided to bid when he determined that skeleton mages armed with Corpse Explosion would be effective in monster battles. This was especially true for him because the required materials ‘muspels’ were common in his volcanic territory.

Simon fully disclosed the content of his thesis to the buyer. Boloure listening to Simon’s explanation repeatedly nodded and exclaimed

“Wow I see so you were able to replace the Hexa formula here! I envy you. It seems that the professors in Kizen teach such innovative methods!”

Simon just smiled. In fact he had simply never learned about the Hexa formula.

And so Simon and Boloure exchanged ideas about the new thesis quickly losing track of time.

“This is amazing! Simon your thesis basically saved our territory!”

Said Boloure as he carefully placed a copy of the thesis into his bag.

“If my research is of any help I’m honored.”

    Simon also smiled.

The conversation with Boloure left Simon swimming with joy and ambition. He had come here to sell his thesis simply to afford the lich’s Life Vessel but now he had received high praise from active necromancers and even contributed to a good cause.

Although he was still just a student he felt happy to have contributed to the world outside of school.

“I look forward to seeing what you will do after graduation. As a senior in the industry I will continue to watch over you.”

    “Thank you so much!”

Boloure left the room to confirm the purchase with the auction-house staff. The two of them sealed the deal putting a drop of their blood on the documents and finally shook hands before parting ways.

Soon the auction-house staff member approached Simon.

“Would you like to receive the payment in gold coins or by check?”

    “In gold coins please.”

Simon followed the staff member. And soon…

    ‘No way.’

A treasure chest packed full of gold coins was waiting for him. After deducting the 10% fee for the Pentamonium auction house 27000 gold was left as Simon’s share.

Simon carefully stored the treasure chest in his subspace.

“Are you that happy? You are absolutely beaming.”

    Chuckled Serene.

Suddenly feeling a bit embarrassed Simon scratched the side of his head.

    “Do you know…?”

    Casually nudged Serene

“If you join the Ivory Tower you could get tenfold the—”

    “Serene!”

    Interrupted Simon eyes wide.

    “Do you think…”

    “Yes?”

    Startled Serene blinked rapidly.

Could it be that money actually worked on him? She’d never tried it before because he seemed far too stoic but maybe…

“Do you think there’s a product auction at Pentamonium not just knowledge auctions?!”

    “…”

Truth be told Simon wasn’t really listening. His only thought was to get the best quality Life Vessel for the lich right away.

    Immediately Serene pouted.

    “Hmph! I don’t know either!”

    “Of course there is.”

Once again Kajann dropped down from the ceiling.

“Would you like to go see it?”

    “Yes! I want to go!”

With 30000 gold in his subspace he was seeing the world through new eyes.

    * * *

    At the same time…

“Now now ladies and gentlemen! Please follow me!”

The Pentamonium academic conference open to the public only once a year.

It was an event that everyone in the Dark Alliance would dream of attending.

Entering requires a teleportation magic circle which carries astronomical costs and of course an invitation from Pentamonium.

Receiving an invitation from Pentamonium was so great an honor getting or not getting an invitation could greatly impact one’s standing and reputation for many nobles. After all this invitation also served as a sign of a noble’s power and wealth.

“Today I shall be your guide to the most dangerous place in Pentamonium!”

The high-ranking nobles who had entered Pentamonium were extremely excited about being chosen.

The guide hired by Pentamonium was also gently humoring the nobles giving them a city tour.

“We will be going right up to the ‘barrier’. Please do not make eye contact with the dreadful things outside the barrier. If you accidentally do make eye contact…”

The guide wagged a finger and gave a mischievous smile.

    “You might get cursed!”

Many ladies pretended to scream in fear and leaned slightly into the gentlemen while the gentlemen blushed boasting how there was nothing to worry about and that they would protect them.

And so the carriage arrived in front of the barrier.

“This barrier was created by the first president of Pentamonium Sir Gorris and is personally maintained by the great Witch of Death. Throughout the history of Pentamonium it has never allowed an invasion from outside! This is the reason why the City of Glass has stood for so long.”

Outside the barrier there was a desolate black plain so devoid of life it was eerie. Zombies could be seen roaming outside the barrier.

“Haha! It has never collapsed ever since the founding of Pentamonium! Now we will  take a twenty-minute break. Feel free to explore!”

Pentamonium’s barrier was a very famous photo spot among the nobles. Groups of nobles gathered to take pictures with expensive mana cameras a display of the pinnacle of luxury.

However the nobles quickly lost interest after taking photos and watching the zombies outside the barrier.

“Guide! We have seen everything here. Lead us someplace else.”

“Of course madam. Understood! Next is the highlight of this trip the artifact auction hall! You shall have the opportunity to purchase rare items from around the world!”

    “Finally the moment has come!”

As the nobles got back into the carriage to move to the city center of Pentamonium…

    Crack.

    Crack.

The barrier which had never allowed a single invasion in its long long history…

It was slowly starting to break.
