    Chapter 351

    “There we go. Come in!”

    Click.

The door opened revealing the third participant.

It was someone Simon knew very well. In fact they saw each other every day.

A male student entered with gray hair and a scar over one eye.

    “Kajann!!”

Simon was in a state of great confusion.

It was clearly an academic conference and specifically for presenting a summoning thesis. And the people accompanying him were Serene and Kajann?

    “Sorry I’m late.”

Kajann had a stiff upper lip. He gave a small bow to Aaron and then looked at Simon.

Serene smiled at him her eyes curved like a crescent moon and waved gracefully. But he clearly ignored it. She then pouted but he ignored her once again.

“I guess introductions are unnecessary since you all already know each other. Have a seat.”

Aaron continued as the three students sat side by side on the sofa

“Now I will start reviewing your theses.”

If Aaron deemed a thesis to be unsatisfactory the author of it wouldn’t be able to attend the conference. Immediately tension gathered in Simon’s stomach.

    Aaron first reviewed Serene’s thesis.

    Flip.

    Flip.

The pages of the document quickly turned one by one.

Anyone should be nervous having a Kizen professor review their thesis but Serene just calmly smiled.

In fact Simon had never seen Serene be afraid or intimidated by anyone not even by a professor in Kizen nor even when the Saintess was right before her.

She instead had her head held high her eyes having to look down to see everything as if the world was below her feet.

    Flip.

Finally after finishing Serene’s thesis Aaron placed it on the desk.

“I have no idea what you wrote here.”

Simon’s mouth opened wide in shock. Not even a professor could understand it?

    “However…”

    Aaron’s voice became serious.

“It’s the kind of content that would appeal to the eccentric necromancers at the conference. Well done.”

    “It’s just basic stuff!”

Feeling smug Serene flicked back her disheveled hair.

Now the next person in turn. Aaron reviewed Kajann’s thesis.

Simon looked at Kajann with a slightly anxious face.

‘What’s the meaning of this Kajann?!’

Kajaan being here was the biggest mystery to Simon. The man was practically all-in with Combat Dark Magic and he was failing all other subjects. He himself had mentioned he scored 20 points on the Summoning-class midterm exam.

And yet he wrote a summoning thesis?

    “…”

And Aaron who was reading Kajann’s thesis was glued in from the first page. His face deadly serious he stopped partway through the page.

    “…Kajann Edvalt.”

Aaron raised his head eyes cold.

    “Who the hell are you?”

Kajann replied in an unfriendly voice

    “I’m just a failing student.”

The atmosphere was strange. Caught in the middle of the two Simon was restless and his eyes flicked between the two of them. Meanwhile Serene was perhaps already feeling bored as she rested her chin on her hand and fiddled with her fingers.

Aaron looked at the first page of the thesis again. The content was terrible but in bad handwriting in the corner of the first page there was a note that said:

    Just let this guy pass!

    -Nefthis-

Above that were childish doodles of flowers trees and clouds presumably drawn by Nefthis.

Aaron let out a deep sigh and rubbed his forehead then he placed down the thesis which he had only read the first page of.

    “You passed.”

    ‘It’s a pass??’

Simon looked at Aaron stunned. Then without elaborating further he picked up Simon’s thesis.

‘Looks like the conference will only serve to insult me. I hope this bastard will cure my rotten eyes.’

Then he opened the first page of the thesis.

    ‘…!’

For the first time today pleasant surprise filled Aaron’s face. Before he knew it he had read up to page five in an instant.

He looked up at Simon then back at the paper then back at Simon again.

‘Wh-What’s up with him? Did I do something wrong?’

As Aaron stared into Simon’s soul over and over again the hands he had politely placed on his lap filled with sweat. Every part of the paper that he wasn’t quite satisfied with became needles pricking his chest.

‘…Man only if I could fix a few things right now. I should have kept it simple since it’s my first thesis.’

Not aware of the passage of time Aaron finally finished reading Simon’s thesis.

He quietly set down the paper and closed his eyes as if savoring the lingering sillage.

‘The whole piece tastes so sweet.’

The front pages grabbed attention with shocking developments and the back pages meticulously narrated support of those developments. It was writing that thoroughly satisfied the abundant curiosity of a necromancer.

On top of that it had the untainted perspective of a student whose brain hadn’t become rigid with tradition yet.

The fact that he precisely pointed out and creatively changed aspects that necromancers who had grown stagnant to the point of becoming rotten couldn’t manage to see…

Aaron opened his eyes and stared at Simon.

    “Simon Polentia.”

    “Y-Yes Professor!’

    “Regardless of the conference…”

He pointed to Simon’s thesis with a perfectly straight finger.

“You may submit this paper as your final performance assessment in Summoning.”

    “!”

Simon’s head spun at those words.

The final Summoning performance assessment involved the ‘creation of a magic-class undead and a thesis’ which was 40% of the entire grade.

He could pass that important task just by submitting this thesis?

    ‘It’s that valuable.’

Aaron thought he would have no choice but to give Simon an A+ even if submitting this was all Simon did. It was simply excellent.

    However…

    “I refuse.”

Answered Simon without any hesitation. The previously nervous boy was no longer to be found replaced by determined eyes staring at Aaron.

“I have no intention of going back on my words. I will definitely submit a lich for the final performance assessment.”

    “…”

    Such explosive youth and passion.

No matter how many times Aaron looked at him Aaron always saw his younger self in Simon.

But now that Aaron was an adult he had to speak like one.

“Even if you do create and submit a lich if its quality is poor it may score lower than this thesis.”

Simon just closed his mouth and smiled.

“…Alright. The thesis is a pass. I bet the conference will be quite lively this time around… in more ways than one.”

    Aaron then gave some precautions.

Since it was an event where all sorts of people gathered he emphasized that the three must always stay together. And that they need to avoid giving other necromancers any cause for complaint.

    The three nodded their heads.

“I believe this conference will be a good experience for all of you. Learn a lot. That’s all.”

    * * *

    The next morning.

Simon Serene and Kajann took a teleportation magic circle and arrived at the Pentamonium where the conference will be held.

    “Wooaah…!”

From his first glance Simon immediately understood why it was nicknamed the ‘City of Glass’.

In particular he could see towering multi-story buildings made from transparent ores that looked like glass reaching into the sky.

People referred to these buildings as ‘glass towers’ and somewhat similar to the Ivory Tower each one was dedicated to a specific field of necromancy. There were a total of seven buildings.

‘There are so many people too.’

Simon could see necromancers in elegant suits walking along the streets.

There were also many ordinary people who hadn’t awakened their cores but they were far outnumbered during this conference. According to Aaron more than two thirds of the people in the city would be necromancers.

However almost all areas except ones related directly to the core were open to the public during the conference.

Modern industries revolved around jet-black and dark magic even if one wasn’t a necromancer. Attending this conference was beneficial for understanding trends and making business decisions.

“It’s nice to be out of that suffocating Roke Island after so long.”

Serene smiled pushing the sunglasses she was wearing up onto her forehead.

People passing by naturally turned their heads towards Serene. Everyone regardless of age glanced at her. Murmurs such as how pretty she is and her Kizen uniform could be heard from all around.

Simon also noticed that just wearing the Kizen uniform drew an incredible amount of attention. The name of Kizen in the outside world was that strong.

However Serene simply scoffed and took out a mirror. Kajann checked the time and said

“I’ve been assigned as the guide so I’ll take the lead.”

    “Wait a minute.”

Feeling thankful that Kajann brought it up Simon looked at Kajann.

“Why are you here Kajann? You didn’t tell me a single word about this.”

    “It’s a mission.”

    Stated Kajann.

The magic word he often fell back on was ‘mission’. It implied that asking more would lead to trouble.

    “What kind of mission?”

Having become closer to Kajann Simon didn’t really think much about it. Kajann sighed then answered

    “A bodyguard mission.”

He then glanced briefly at Serene.

    “And a surveillance mission too.”

    “?”

Serene blinked with an exaggerated face of innocence but Kajann ignored her.

“Is a bodyguard really necessary in such a small and crowded place like this?”

At Simon’s question Kajann scratched the scar on his eye.

“You were attacked by Commander Magnus even within Roke Island Simon. Though Magnus is currently playing it safe due to the Crows’ pursuit it doesn’t hurt to be careful.”

“I got it I got it. I’ll be caref—”

    “Oh! That reminds me!”

Serene cut in between them throwing her arms around Simon and Kajann’s shoulders.

“This comp! We gathered again! The Three Saintess Killers all hiding our true strengths!”

    Simon made a bitter smile.

    ‘The name is so bad.’

    “Get off.”

    Growled Kajann.

In the end Serene released them pouting once more. And once more Kajann ignored her. He gestured forward and said

    “Follow me.”

Following Kajann they arrived at the first floor of the glass tower dedicated to summoning. According to his explanation the entire building seemed to be facilities related to summoning.

    ‘Oh!’

There was a large signboard out front covered with posters and schedules about events happening in the building. There were people showing off new summons improvised debates and lectures by famous figures in the field.

‘This is so cool. So this is a conference!’

This place was like heaven for Simon who was deeply interested in summoning. His eyes darted every which way trying to pull him in all directions.

‘I want to experience everything! I wish I had ten bodies.’

While Simon was looking through the main schedule he found his own event too.

    [Student necromancer thesis presentations]

    Kizen Alland Sierra Moyran.

It seemed students from schools other than Kizen were also here.

Today was the turn for the second-year students to present and tomorrow was for the first-years.

    ‘I’m getting excited!’

While Simon was giddily looking through the schedule Serene and Kajann were arguing.

    “It’ll be just 5 minutes I said!”

    “I’ll come with you.”

“Oh my how far do you plan to follow me? You got a pervy side huh?”

“I’ll decide how far I’ll go.”

In the end Serene and Kajann moved together.

Meanwhile Simon decided to sit nearby and wait. His mind was already filled with thoughts of what to see first.

    “Oh! Look who’s here.”

However a high-pitched voice broke his thoughts.

“The noble Kizen students have arrived here as well.”

    “The elite among elites…”

Three students two male and one female in green checkered uniforms were approaching Simon.

    Simon’s eyes widened.

    ‘Don’t tell me!’

It was his first time meeting students from other necromancer schools.
