    Chapter 348

Aeon Castle was built on top of an obsidian mine in a mountain range. However over the years the entire fort had grown extremely dilapidated.

The castle walls were meant to not be broken so they were meticulously repaired as war ravaged the lands to maintain their strength. But other parts of the fort were far more neglected.

When Simon first came and looked around Aeon Castle he was surprised to see that many pillars that were supposed to support the majority of entire structures were dangerously old.

At first he was worried thinking ‘What if the enemy destroys this?’ but that thought quickly changed to ‘What if I destroy it first?’

“Do not fear. The obsidian mines are the safest place in the kingdom. These walls are so durable that even if the entire castle were to collapse my subjects will be safe inside the mines.”

That was why the king evacuated his civilians into the mines.

So Simon drove the massive monster duke into the lowest part of the castle and then with the help of the skeleton mages he detonated it with his signature Corpse Explosion.

    And the result was…

    Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrumble!

    Devastating.

If the ground below collapsed so too would the top.

In a city-wide landslide every structure and bit of developed land began rolling down the bank of the mountain the city was built upon.

The screams of the Khan soldiers were drowned out by the roar of the collapsing buildings and beast-humans fell alongside them like black rain.

    Crrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaassssshhhhh!

A thick layer of dust billowed out around the base of the mountain as the mass of earth and stone tumbled down at terrifying speeds.

And all that remained of the city was the towering mountain it once stood on and the mine in its original form just as the king had said.

The only structure that still stood was the royal palace built on top of the stable mines. Everyone in the palace was speechless.

    “Woah… Honestly…”

Rick let out a short laugh as he looked out at the overturned dirt surrounding the palace on all sides.

“The thought of a defending team taking down their own castle… Well it’s a thought I’d rather not have.”

    [Defending team (9/15)]

    [Attacking team (3/15)]

With this attack a whopping seven players from the attacking team had been eliminated.

    The war was practically over.

“If it’s that much they would’ve been wiped out.

“Did Hector get caught up in it too?”

“Seems like he survived. But there’s no way he’s still in fighting shape.”

As Simon and the rest of his team were cautiously peeking out from the palace observing the situation…

“Thank you for saving the kingdom. Squeak squeak.”

An authoritative voice came from behind them.

    “Your Majesty!”

The king of the Aeon Kingdom was approaching. Simon bowed his head.

“I apologize your majesty. This was the only way to stop the Khan Kingd—”

“Squeak. No do not apologize dear guardian.”

The king patted Simon on the shoulder.

“We can always rebuild the city. What we cannot rebuild is…”

The king and the students looked back.

    “…the people.”

News had spread that the soldiers had returned and ratmen hiding in the mines rushed out hugging the soldiers and squeaking in joy. Some couples exchanged passionate kisses and beaming smiles formed on the soldiers’ faces upon seeing their children safe and sound.

“A city means nothing. If we gather together once more we shall be able to accomplish anything.”

The king continued with a benevolent smile

“Thank you for saving my people dear guardians.”

Several hours passed and the dust settled revealing a jagged mountain range where Aeon Castle once stood.

The walls and residential areas had been swept away leaving only the mountain range and black rocks where the obsidian mine was close to the surface.

This attack almost brought the Khan Kingdom to the brink of annihilation.

Only three necromancers remained and their army was no longer capable of fighting. There were too many casualties to sort out.

Elissa tried to regroup the few soldiers who were luckily outside the castle either because they were injured or had helped an injured soldier get to safety. She ordered them to charge saying she’d try to do something but the defenders still had their full force of archers.

The archers rained death on all who tried to climb the steep mountain range leading to another devastating defeat.

Infuriated Elissa attempted to infiltrate by carrying her troops on her Phantom Ships but the necromancers from the defending team weren’t staying idle.

Led by Meilyn they unleashed a fire spell that engulfed the sky in a sea of fire. Elissa barely escaped losing one of her Phantom Ships in the process.

    “Dammit!”

    Thud!

Hector slammed Elissa against the wall grabbing her by the collar.

“…That hurts. Is a noble’s son allowed to hit a lady?”

“Cut the crap already Elissa Seline!!”

Hector glared at her murder in his eyes. It looked like he would tear her apart at any moment.

“I did everything your way! You even went against my will and sacrificed Jule to exhaust Simon! And this is the result??”

    “…I have no excuse.”

    Sighed Elissa.

Confident that they’d already won she acted too hastily. Instead of sending forces directly to the palace she should’ve scouted the surroundings and assessed the enemy’s strategy first.

Her ‘one-step-ahead’ approach which had cut through the north gate of the outer and inner castle far quicker than anyone expected ultimately backfired at the last moment becoming a deadly poison.

Elissa bowed her head in resignation.

“…I admit my mistake in command. If you think violence will ease your anger do as you please.”

Hector gnashed his teeth and then slammed her against the wall once more before turning away. Elissa plopped down on the ground.

    “Hehe…”

A timid laugh leaked out of her lips.

“I’ll definitely repay this debt someday Simon Polentia.”

Leaving those words Elissa withdrew all her Phantom Ships and touched her card to forfeit the game.

If victory was clearly impossible it was wise to leave the game as soon as possible and look for other cards.

    “God fucking dammit!!!”

Hector looked up and glared at the palace atop the mountain range.

The ending of the siege theme was spectacular.

As the day broke and the sun rose over the horizon cavalry who supported the Aeon Kingdom struck the rear of the remnants of the Khan Kingdom’s army.

Normally the arrival of these reinforcements would’ve been more dramatic but with Aeon Kingdom’s troops in the palace and Khan’s soldiers all camped outside it ended after a single skirmish.

Still it was impressive enough. Watching cavalry sweep through the enemy dust billowing behind them would make anyone’s heart pound in excitement.

    [Aeon Kingdom was victorious!]

[Thanks to your efforts Aeon Kingdom will prosper once more!]

[The defending team has won the game!]

The air sparked with messages confirming the victory and cards appeared in front of the students who survived.

They were the purple cards of the siege battle.

    “We won!”

Their sudden victory finally starting to feel real everyone shouted in joy grabbing and raising their cards.

    “Huh?”

    “What’s wrong Simon?”

Asked Rick who was celebrating by kissing his card over and over again.

“It looks like there’s another card behind the purple one…”

    Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap!

Suddenly a brilliant light burst from the back of Simon’s purple card. There was indeed another card only for Simon.

    Meilyn shouted in surprise

    “That’s a gold card!”

Indeed she was right. A gold card which no one had obtained yet was shining in Simon’s hand.

“So it comes out in a siege theme too!”

“I guess you have to play as active a role as Simon did to get one.”

The best card combination was the seven subject colors plus the gold card making a total of eight cards.

Now Simon needed just two more different colors to achieve the highest score.

    “Congratulations Simon.”

Fitzgerald Simon’s clubmate in Mutant and ally in this siege walked up to Simon.

“Thanks. I feel bad that I’m the only one who got one when you also did an amazing job.”

    “Not as amazing as you.”

In fact Fitzgerald’s performance was incredible in this siege.

Although he didn’t draw much attention not starting in any areas where Kizen foes struck he almost single-handedly defended the east gate of the outer castle. And when the north gate was breached he was a key figure in protecting the allies as they retreated holding back thousands of Khan Kingdom soldiers.

Later he also took down several key students from the attacking team but his achievements couldn’t compare to Simon’s who had taken out over 10000 soldiers and seven necromancers in a single blow.

“Hehehe. Well for now thanks for the card and…”

Rick carefully placed his purple card into his pocket and raised his head.

“I don’t think this is the end! Isn’t there something more Mr. Endolas?!!”

As if he really responded to Rick’s words another light appeared in the sky.

    Pew! Pew!

With the sound of cheap fireworks popping off winged gift boxes began to flutter down above everyone’s heads.

    “As expected!”

    “It’s Endolas’ present!”

The students excitedly opened the gift boxes that had fallen at their feet. There was a black shiny ore inside each one.

    “This is obsidian ore.”

    “Real obsidian? That’s hella expensive!”

“So this is why he added the obsidian mine inside the game!”

The students smiled widely and compared the sizes of their obsidian ores boasting about whose was bigger and whose was smaller.

    “Wow!”

    Shouted Rick.

“This is amazing! Mine’s super big! It’s really huge stuff!”

“…Think before you speak you crazy bastard!”

For some reason Meilyn’s face turned bright red when Rick said that.

    While everyone was happily chatting

    “…”

Only Simon was awkwardly standing with empty hands. Rick walked up to him.

“Hey Simon how big is yours? Is it bigger than mine? Let’s compare!”

    “I-I don’t have a gift though?”

    “Huh?”

Meilyn and Fitzgerald also approached him.

    “Why didn’t Simon get anything?”

“Was the gold card a substitute for the gift?”

    “That can’t b—!”

    Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap!

Just then another brilliant light erupted this time coming from the sky.

The students stepped back and covered their eyes as the sudden light threatened to blind them.

    “Look over there!”

From the brilliant light a much larger gift box than the other students’ appeared and fell down toward Simon.

    “That must be it!”

    Rick jumped up in excitement.

“It’s that grand prize Endolas showed in the great hall!”

“Right! So it was a reward for the siege theme after all!”

The large box landed on Simon’s outstretched arms. He placed it on the ground and with a pounding heart grabbed the lid.

    The students gathered around Simon.

    “Shall I open it?”

Simon made a mischievous smile. The students cheered loudly.

    “Open it! Open it!”

“Stop stringing it out and open it already!”

In feigned reluctance Simon opened the chest with a smile.

    [Kekekekekekeke!]

The moment the lid cracked open an annoying laugh pierced their ears. Then a staff shot up into the air and started flying around the palace.

“It’s the autonomous staff ‘Areldellu!’ ”

    Simon nodded.

Since he was a summoning aspirant he inwardly wished for a death phoenix but this wasn’t bad either. In fact given his current situation where he was trying to create a lich this might be better.

    [Kekekeke!]

Areldellu zoomed around the palace playing pranks on the students. It shot curses to change their hair colors smacked Rick on the back of his head and darted out of reach.

    “You little…!”

Rick jumped to catch Areldellu but it easily slipped under him and tripped him.

    “Ugh shit!”

Pathetically rolling on the ground Rick covered his head.

    “What’s wrong with this staff?!”

“You idiot what are you doing?”

Meilyn placed her hands on her hips and laughed. As she did Areldellu darted over to her and flipped up her skirt.

    “@#$!#^#$!!!”

Meilyn’s face turned extremely red as she charged at it in a fury.

    “I’ll kill you!!”

She randomly shot ice into the air but Areldellu dodged it before mockingly shaking in the air.

    “Hmm…”

Rick stroked his chin with a serious face.

“That might not even be a staff.”

    Slam!

Getting hit in the back of his head by Meilyn’s stray block of ice Rick collapsed on the ground.

Simon silently laughed and held out his hand.

    “Come back.”

Thankfully—perhaps it recognizes its master—Areldellu flew straight into Simon’s hand. Then Simon quickly stored it in his subspace before Meilyn could destroy it.

    “It’s a portal!”

Just then a portal to exit the game opened. Everyone laughed cheerfully exchanging words of thanks and congratulations.

    “Squeak! Atten… tion!”

At that moment the king soldiers and all the villagers stood before the students about to leave through the portal.

    “Salute to the great guardians!”

    “Aeum Aeon!”

All the soldiers saluted to the students.

“Squeak! Thank you for saving the kingdom!”

    “Farewell squeak squeak!”

The villagers and soldiers they had fought alongside waved farewell.

Touched the students waved back one last time too.

Simon waved as well picked up the empty box that Areldellu popped out of and walked toward the portal.

He had just figured out a use for this staff too.
