    Chapter 296

    On the outskirts of Khelso.

This place had a better view of the crumbling barrier. It was a rare spectacle to see such a large majestic wall shatter like a pane of glass.

There stood a girl watching the scene with an expressionless face.

A black robe covering her white school uniform she stood still with her hands shoved in her pockets. Her eyes were a mixture of countless conflicting emotions.

    “…S-Sister Rete.”

Next to her was her dorm roommate Lilinette.

She was dressed in a brown robe and she observed Rete cautiously before she spoke.

“I-I wonder if this is really a good thing…? To let a saintess die.”

“I don’t know if it’s good but it’s the right thing to do.”

    Cynically replied Rete.

“A Saintess born of a drugged-up middle-aged man? Hah! I don’t think Efnel would approve of such filth.”

“B-But still they sent the Paladins. Is that not some level of approval?”

    “…”

Rete stayed silent for a moment at Lilinette’s counterargument then admitted.

    “I’ll be honest with you.”

    “?”

Rete flicked her white hair behind her ear.

“I’m the most plausible candidate for saintess on this continent y’know? I wanted to interfere rather than get my chances stolen by some weird fake Saintess. Do you understand?”

“…Th-That doesn’t seem to be the truth.”

Rete’s eyes ignited at Lilinette’s timid retort.

“Ah then what?!! What else would it be then if I’m the one giving this confession??!!”

    “The blue-haired boy from Kizen.”

    Rete paused.

“Didn’t you actually do it for him? When you heard he was going to Khelso you reacted quickly and stopped the Paladins.”

Lilinette’s already shaking voice started to become mumbly.

“In fact that letter you got from a guy when you were in the dorm… Wasn’t that from that Kizen boy too?”

    “…Good grief.”

    Rete broke into laughter.

“Your problem is that you think too much in ‘that direction’ Lilinette.”

“A-Are you going to deny it?”

“Okay. Look me right in the eyes and tell me why I should go that far to help a necromancer.”

    “…”

Lilinette silently pictured Simon’s face in her mind.

He was a necromancer but he was pretty and handsome.

“So you like him after a—!”

“I’m warning you. Let your thoughts actually pass through your brain!”

Snarled Rete in a quick denial turning Lilinette dead silent.

Rete took another step forward and leaned in close.

“You’re my roommate aren’t you? So tell me. Do I look like the kind of woman who would fall for a boy?”

    “…”

Lilinette replayed the men Rete had gotten involved with.

    Rete and men.

Scenes of Rete and men together.

Beating stomping slamming heads against walls beating stomping beating stomping.

    ‘Whew.’

All she could think of was violence. After all Rete was…

    “I spoke amiss!”

    Unimaginably far from romantic stuff!

Once Lilinette admitted it and apologized Rete nonchalantly turned away.

“As long as you get it. Let’s go Lilinette.”

    “Alright sister!”

Lilinette returned to her usual cheerful voice and clung to Rete’s arm.

“Hehe! Of course of course! Sister Rete wouldn’t do that! How could a woman who treats men like punching bags could do that!?”

“…Don’t whisper shit about me under your breath.”

    “Alright~”

Anyhow the neighborhood they were in was dangerous. There were too many necromancers.

The moment the two of them were walking out of the village.

    Step.

A boy in a white robe perfectly opposite to Rete’s black robe was walking in the opposite direction.

    Step.

The two crossed paths their white and black robes fluttering behind them.

    “!”

    Rete stopped and turned around.

    “Wait Si—”

    However…

    “Look at this Simon!”

“Hey! Have you ever seen someone with the same color jet-black as you?”

There were people around the boy.

Friends. People his age chatting boisterously.

    “Sister Rete!”

Rete turned around quickly at the suddenly raised voice. Lilinette was looking at her with a sour expression.

“How many times do I have to call your attention!”

    “Ah mm sorry.”

“I said let’s go get something to eat over there! Come on!”

    “…Sure let’s go.”

After replying Rete took one last look behind her.

The boy in the white robe had already vanished.

Simon had safely replaced himself with Elizabeth and returned to his groupmates. In the meantime the situation had quickly settled down.

Sasha was immediately taken to the temporary medical center and it was concluded that was to be transferred to the Dark Territory with a teleportation magic circle for a more thorough examination. She wasn’t waking up but thankfully her life wasn’t in danger.

A group of vigilantes from the neutral area arrived soon after grasping the situation and recovering the corpses.

Word soon spread that a priest named ‘Figaro’ who had sought the Saintess’ power had imprisoned and slaughtered the villagers. The entire neutral area was outraged and hostility toward Efnel had increased greatly.

Efnel was perplexed by the exact way the events had played out.

Whether it was fortunate or misfortunate the group of Paladins heading toward Figaro had been ambushed and neutralized by Rete so Efnel completely denied any connection between themselves and Figaro.

They officially announced that they never recognized him as a Saintess and that the massacre was a tragedy of Figaro’s own making.

Kizen also dispatched Crows to find out what was going on.

Part of the investigation included subjecting Group 7 to a light interrogation. After collecting the necessary evidence HQ had a debate about whether to consider Simon and Group 7’s mission a success or a failure.

At this point it was Vengeance and Agent Blake who unexpectedly stepped forward to defend the students.

“The students did nothing wrong. The blame lies solely on us Vengeance.”

He said that ‘Figaro’ who kidnapped Sasha was at least on par with a rank 3 necromancer so it’s no wonder the students couldn’t stop him. If they had managed their employees better and assigned them proper mentors the outcome would’ve been different.

The Kizen HQ agreed to this and in the end only Vengeance was left to face the punishment.

    “W-We’re sorry. Because of us…”

Camibarez and the students felt apologetic for this but Blake reassured them that it was their fault and that the organization wouldn’t be disbanded: Vengeance was too important and had done too much for the Alliance to suffer such a heavy blow.

And Seiwirr who was already on the list to be disposed of by both Vengeance and effectively the Dark Alliance was given summons by the Dark Alliance to answer for his actions.

While the students were cleared of responsibility for the Khelso massacre it was decided that they would be sent on one more mission to fulfill their requirements for the dispatch.

This time however they would actually be working with the person who should’ve been their mentor: Agent Blake.

“Our mission is to destroy the Sentinels. It disgusts us that they took a mission for Efnel so we came to a conclusion to root them out once and for all.”

Even though they had to do one more mission the members of Group 7 were in a good mood.

After the experience with Seiwirr working with their original mentor—Blake—was so pleasant.

Blake was an industry legend of the neutral area and the face of Vengeance.

But even more deeply moved than the students having a change in mentor…

“Agent! Please have some of this~”

    “H-Huh?”

    …was Agent Blake.

“Are you telling me that you actually cared about me? Th-Thank you. Thank you so much!”

Blake was suffering from a severe case of ‘kids-these-days-phobia.’ He hadn’t slept for days when he heard that a dispatch was coming from Kizen and the incident with Seiwirr made him walk on eggshells even more.

However when he actually met the students he realized that the rumors weren’t true. The students were very kind and smart.

“And then?! What happened after that?? Tell us more!!”

Especially when he told them about his past experiences in the neutral area. Their eyes lit up and they wanted to hear his stories all night.

“Do you really want to know? It’s just an old story…”

    “Yes! Come on now!”

Unlike Seiwirr Blake’s stories were from a real-life experience so the students’ attitudes listening to them were entirely different. Not knowing this Blake was dumbfounded by the students’ reactions.

And just like that he had overcome his kids-these-days-phobia and the generational gap in real-time by spending time with Group 7.

    * * *

    The Sentinels.

    Their underground hideout.

    “Ugh…”

The gray-haired captain that organized Sasha’s kidnapping was lying in a chair groaning in pain.

‘I never thought I’d end up in jail.’

He’d been defeated by kid necromancers from Kizen and handed over to the neutral area vigilantes but his subordinates had bailed him out for a hefty sum.

    Thump!

    “Captain! We’re in trouble!”

At the shout of a gang member who burst through the door all of a sudden the captain frowned and said

“What’s the fuss all about? You’re making my ears ring.”

    “N-Necromancers are—!”

    Thud!

The gang member was knocked down to the ground his eyes rolling back into his head. Behind him a girl with long blue hair stepped in with a pretty smile.

“Hello~ Good to see you again mister.”

The captain jumped like he had seen a ghost.

“You’re that…! That necromancer woman from Kizen!”

The gang members jumped to their feet and drew their knives their faces filled with unbridled bloodlust.

However Meilyn casually activated her pre-prepared magic circle and raised it to the ceiling.

    {Hail Storm}

From the ceiling chunks of ice began to fly out in all directions. The gang members charging in were struck by the ice either being knocked out cold or sent sprawling across the ground.

    Pssssssssshhhhhhhhh!

This time a green smoke began to spread throughout the basement.

“Hahaha! Here comes the poison gas!”

Rick and Camibarez made their appearance as well.

Rick threw his enchanted net onto anyone he could reach and spread sticky poison on the floor while Camibarez fired blood bullets fending off anyone who got too close with her impressive combat dark magic techniques that used her small stature to her advantage.

The hideout was underground and cramped. As the poisonous gas spread dozens of foes quickly began to collapse.

But the Kizen students on the other hand were moving through the poisonous gas without masks or any other equipment.

“Dammit! H-How did they find us out?!”

The captain hid behind the sofa face pale.

“Where are all the bastards with awakened cores?!”

“Agent Blake went to them mister.”

At the sudden voice behind his back the captain’s heart sank and he turned around.

It was the blue-haired boy who had captured him. The same boy who had haunted his nightmares ever since was walking toward him.

“I’m sure they’ve all been knocked out by now. Agent Blake is a powerful rank 3 necromancer after all.”

    “Kugh! You bastard!”

The captain drew his sword and scowled.

“Ah and it was my idea for you to be bailed out after bribing the vigilantes.”

    Simon smiled.

“After all we had to find your headquarters.”

    “You bastard!!”

The captain lunged with his sword but he was immediately sent rolling across the ground as Simon kicked him.

“Terrorizing the villagers extorting them with made up taxes? It’s time to put these bad businesses to rest.”

Said Simon as he sat on the captain and pulled cuffs around his wrists.

The Sentinels was a gang built on 20 years of history. But it only took one night for them to fall.
