    Chapter 280

    “Wh-What is this?!”

The letter was blank. There was nothing on it.

It was as white as a blank canvas.

    “…”

An awkward gust of wind passed between the four of them as they crowded around the letter.

    “I think we’re kinda screwed.”

Rick was the first to speak.

“They told us that this letter contains everything like the mentor and their location.”

    “Wh-What do we do?”

    Rick sharply turned his head.

“Maybe Meilyn did something wrong when she broke the seal on the letter?”

    But Meilyn vehemently denied it.

    ‘Hmm.’

Simon tried to think of something but it was not like he had any good way to solve the matter either.

He tried shaking the letter lightly flicking it and trying to see if anything else was inside the envelope but he was getting nowhere.

Just when everyone was out of ideas and staring at the letter in disbelief…

    Whirrrr!

    “Wha—?!”

Meilyn let out a scream. A jet-black magic circle suddenly unfurled in the center of the empty letter.

    Clunk! Clank!

Accompanied by the sounds of interlocking blocks of iron a dark barrier spread out from the letter and enveloped the four of them.

Camibarez let out a startled yelp and the other three gathered around her keeping their guards up with the sudden change in surroundings.

[Confirmation of the 1st class security document. Activating memory recall spell.]

A clear voice could be heard from the letter.

    “Oh could it be…?!”

Meilyn spoke up as if she had realized something.

“Because the letter’s contents shouldn’t be revealed to the public did they replace them with this kind of high security spell?”

    “I think so too!”

Chimed in Rick clapping his hands together in understanding.

    [Confirming recipients.]

This time magic circles unfolded in front of the faces of the four.

[Meilyn Villenne Simon Polentia Rick Hayward and Camibarez Ursula. Recipients identified.]

The circles in front of them vanished as quickly as they appeared.

    “How interesting!”

Exclaimed Rick. Their fear now gone the four of them looked around with faces filled with curiosity.

    Fwoooosh!

A dark red flame filled the empty air. Scraps of paper fell from the flame gathering in the air to form words.

Everyone’s eyes widened as they stared at the words.

    {Vengeance}

Dark Territory Neutral Area Special Agent Dispatch Authority

    “No way!”

    Gasped Rick continuing to shout

“Vengeance! To think it’s that Vengeance! Our dispatch mission is amazing!”

    “What is Vengeance?”

Asked Simon unable to contain his curiosity.

“They’re sentinels in the neutral area.”

Meilyn replied instead running a hand through her light-blue hair.

“You see since the neutral area is completely ‘neutral’—as the name implies—neither Kizen nor Efnel have an influence over it right? So there are private organizations that work for the Dark Territory taking missions from Kizen.”

“And of all those private organizations Vengeance is the most famous!”

Rick was almost grinning from ear to ear.

“It’s a necromancer organization that fights priests! Perhaps we’re going to go fight priests too!”

    “P-Priests you say…”

Camibarez’ eyes darted around in horror.

    Fizzle.

As they were talking the pieces of paper burnt to ash and new words took their place.

Seiwirr Griezmann. Intelligence department third rank approved by union officials.

    Meilyn nodded.

“Hm hm. This person must be our mentor.”

Now a scroll appeared from the flames the edges slightly charred. It unfolded to reveal a map.

A building was marked in red in the village where the four of them had just arrived.

“Maybe that’s where we’re supposed to meet the mentor?”

    “I think so too.”

    Fwoosh!

The map burned into nothingness and the darkness that had covered them lifted revealing the town around them again.

“Whewwww! As expected from Vengeance! Can you believe they’re showing their level of class even in a simple letter?!”

While Rick made a big fuss out of excitement Simon visualized the map from earlier and compared it to the current scene he was looking at.

    “Tavern shop dock…”

He nodded as he checked the buildings one by one.

“Mhmm I got it. It’s this way.”

    “Way to go Simon!”

The three followed after Simon. Seemingly in a very jolly mood Rick whistled along as he wrapped his arms around Simon’s neck.

“Wahaha! Isn’t it so exciting to be a special agent?!”

    “It is.”

    Simon chuckled and nodded.

    “Oh please commoner…”

Said Meilyn putting a hand on her forehead.

“You’re the one that worries me the most. Please don’t act up by being disrespectful in front of the mentor later. They are also the ones who have control over our grades.”

“Of course of course. I’m a man of sense too.”

Meanwhile Camibarez was standing close to Simon gently grabbing at the hem of his robe.

She was like a wary kitten.

The sound of a door slamming shut on the opposite side of the village and the slightest shout from people half a block away all caused her to flinch and hide behind Simon.

    “Cami are you alright?”

    “Ah yes!”

She tried her best to smile. She seemed to be having a little bit of trouble adjusting to the new environment.

    “It’s over there!”

Shouted Rick. It was the treehouse they’d seen on the map.

It stood out from the rest of the village as the other houses were made of clay. The sign said it was a small tavern in the village.

The four of them walked on in nervously.

    “Excuse me.”

As the group leader Meilyn led the way into the building. They were worried about how to recognize their mentor not having any password or secret code to confirm who it was but…

They were all worried for nothing.

After all there was only one person sitting in the tavern. He wore a bright smile revealing his pearly white teeth.

Perhaps wearing the Vengeance uniform he had an ash-gray suit with a green patterned tie. His blonde hair was longer on the left side covering his eyebrow but leaving his pointed nose completely visible. He was also moderately lean which only made his sharp jawline even more prominent.

Overall he was a handsome man with thick eyebrows and a greasy smile. He spoke first opening his arms widely.

    “Wel~come students of Kizen!”

His voice was higher than expected almost close to that of a soprano. The four of them bowed in unison.

    “Nice to meet you!”

“Now… make yourselves comfortable and take a seat.”

He brushed back his disheveled bangs closed his left eye and smiled with his white teeth which glinted in the sun.

Soon the four of them were seated around a single table. They all straightened their backs and put their hands in their laps trying to look as respectful and polite as possible.

“Haha you don’t have to be so nervous. You can relax in front of me.”

He placed a hand on his chest and continued

“As you saw in the letter my name is Seiwirr Griezmann. I work for the intelligence department in Vengeance.”

“Ah yes! Allow us to introduce ourselves as well. First I’m Meilyn Villenne the leader of the group!”

Meilyn began to introduce them all one by one.

You could feel Seiwirr’s eyes shining especially when she introduced Simon.

“So you must be Kizen’s S.A.1 who has been the source of many a rumor.”

Meilyn and Rick glanced in envy at Simon. After all the title of S.A.1 was treated with respect wherever they went.

    “Satisfying.”

Seiwirr ran the back of his hand through his bangs that stuck out and winked.

“It’s only obvious for Kizen to send students as great as you four to be working with me for a week at Vengeance.”

Listening to Seiwirr’s explanation Simon let out an inward sigh.

    ‘That’s a relief.’

Truth is he had been a little worried about the dispatch evaluation after the seniors from the Mutant club had scared the shit out of him.

There were a lot of bad examples.

Starting from a mentor who would swap from sweetheart to shouting in a second one who physically abused their students a mad scientist who tried to turn students into undead a scumbag who sexually harassed female students and a spiteful mentor who didn’t give any work to do for the entire evaluation period and gave their students zeroes at the end of the evaluation.

Still based on first impressions Seiwirr seemed to be one of the few necromancers who at least had his common sense.

“Seeing young necromancers like you guys reminds me of the days back then when I was still a student. Many of my professors offered me to be their direct disciple but…”

He seemed a bit talkative though.

“By the way where’s the letter?”

    “I have it.”

“Hand it over please. I’ll take care of it.”

Simon politely went to hand over the letter but Rick interrupted

“We were so surprised to see nothing written on the letter!  And then to think we’d see such a sight! Whew!”

    “Rick!”

Meilyn gave him some fierce side-eye but Seiwirr just smiled and added

“It’s natural to be surprised when you first see it.”

Seiwirr pulled his bangs to the side yet again winked and flashed his white teeth.

“Actually I was once like that too and…”

He started pouring out stories like a waterfall.

While listening to the stories Simon looked at the letter he had placed on the table.

    ‘…’

He could faintly see something blurry on the letter that should’ve been a blank piece of paper. Simon opened his eyes wide to look but Seiwirr snatched the letter up and shoved it into his pocket before he could decipher anything.

    “Um Senior…? Seiwirr.”

    “Please address me as ‘Agent’.”

    “Ah yes Agent Seiwirr!”

“Of course I’ll address you all as agents as well. Agent Meilyn.”

Seiwirr winked as he flicked back his ever-falling bangs. The motion seemed to be beyond habit. Simon wouldn’t be surprised if kept doing it even after he was dead.

“I don’t care if you’re a student. As long as you’re on the same job as me we’re equals who can trust each other with our lives.”

“As to be expected from Vengeance! You’ve got a great mindset Agent!”

Rick gave a thumbs-up with both hands. He seemed to have completely fallen to Seiwirr’s charm.

    “Please…”

Meilyn kicked Rick in the leg to warn him not to act up.

“Agent I’m wondering what kind of mission we’re going on this time.”

“That’s a very good question Agent Meilyn!”

    Said Seiwirr snapping his fingers.

Then their surroundings became dark just like when they opened the letter.

    “Sorry it’s for security purposes.”

Having said that Seiwirr gestured for them to come closer. The four leaned in so close they weren’t even sitting on their chairs anymore.

“Our mission is to secure one important person.”

“An important person?! Who could that person be?”

    Asked Rick immediately.

“I like that you’re participative Agent Rick. I’ll make sure to reflect that in your mission attitude grade.”

    “Thank you!”

Looking at that another flicker of jealousy went over Meilyn’s face. She leaned in even more taking things seriously.

    “It is none other than…”

Simon’s ears perked up his nerves only growing.

    “None other than…”

Everything was good but Simon wished he didn’t keep dragging it out.

After taking one last look at the curious reactions of the four Seiwirr said in a very small near-silent voice

    “A candidate for a Saintess.”

The four students’ mouths dropped to the floor at once. As if he had been waiting for such a reaction Seiwirr smiled with satisfaction.

    “A-A candidate for a Saintess?”

“That’s right Agent Simon. We Vengeance have recently received first-class intelligence from an agent who has infiltrated Efnel!”

    His voice became furtive.

“That in this neutral area a girl with a great divinity compatibility that rivals even the greatest Saintesses of history has been born.

    “!”

“And we’ve also received an intelligence that Efnel is mobilizing its priests to bring that girl to them.”

He began to stretch out his fingers.

“Coincidentally this is related to you as students of Kizen. I assume you know about the Saintess of Purification?”

    How could they not?

The Saintess tried to wipe out the entire first-year of Kizen by possessing the body of Francesca the chief assistant teacher of Poisonous Alchemy.

Her scheme was thwarted by some students including Simon and she was killed by Nefthis. But her ‘Essence of Purification’ was later imbued into Anna’s body making Simon travel to the Holy Federation.

The Saintess of Purification was involved in Simon’s life in many ways.

“Efnel is on edge right now. It has been a long time since the death of the Saintess of Purification and yet the next Saintess hasn’t appeared yet. It is very rare for there to be such a long period of time before the next Saintess’ descent.”

Everyone nodded nervously as they listened to Seiwirr’s story.

“In fact the most suitable person to become the Saintess of Purification was right there in the neutral area. Efnel seemed quite certain this time. And we’re going to…”

    Seiwirr clapped his hands together.

“…secure that girl before Efnel does.”
