Necromancer Academy’s Genius Summoner – 277

Chapter 277
After the intense third BDMAT Kizen let the students take a bit of a breather.
Fatigue had accumulated in the students from the non-stop events so the faculties focused on progressing with textbooks rather than physical training or performance assessments.
Through this Kizen created an atmosphere conducive to rest but it was also a great opportunity to develop individual skills.
Simon took one-on-one light-magic tutoring from Farahann once or twice a week.
He also went to the library after classes to study the four curses created by Bahil.
Additionally he worked on his efficiency in the hemomancy components required to form the Cloud and blood golem while also building up stamina for combat dark magic.
Last but certainly not least he also strengthened his basics in summoning. He was now able to control eight undead at once which put him close to the best of the first-years in terms of that.
Simon continued to build his skills diligently day by day. In addition to simply guaranteeing survival in Kizen he also had an imminent duel with Commander Magnus. His resolve was more certain than anyone else.
‘I somehow got through the daily tasks today.’
Simon stretched as he entered room 409 his dorm room and sat down in front of his desk.
Although the pressure of tests was gone and was granted more free time he somehow felt busier than usual.
He stared outside the window that fell into darkness then turned to look at the calendar.
‘It’s already this time of the year already?’
More than half of the integrate second semester was already over. As he stared at the calendar he picked up a quill and crossed out the date.
It was soon his mother’s Anna’s birthday. Since he couldn’t leave Roke Island he thought he’d send her a letter and a gift.
“I’m back!”
The door swung open and Rick walked in with a wide humored smile on his face.
“Welcome back Rick.”
“What you doin’?”
“Studying curses. Be right back restroom.”
Simon stepped out briefly
Seeing what his best mate had become Rick tutted to himself.
“He’s starting to sound more and more like Meilyn. He’s even studying in the dorm?”
As Rick took off his robe and headed to hang it up…

“Hm?”
His gaze shifted to Simon’s calendar.

There was a joke among students that Kizen and peace could not coexist.
In fact the peace didn’t last long this time either.
“Okay everyone. Next week we have a dispatch evaluation scheduled.”
Jane made a new announcement during her Beginner Dark Magic class.
‘Dispatch evaluation?’
It was another new system. As Simon and Camibarez were tilting their heads in confusion Rick was chuckling meaningfully from where he sat in the back.
“Mmwahaha finally it’s about time.”
“Do you know what it is Rick?”
“I heard a little about these evaluations from the seniors. She’ll soon explain it to us.”
Just then Jane who had been blankly clearing the table called out
“Mr. Rick Hayward having heard a little about these evaluations…”
‘She heard that?!’
Rick leaped to his feet straightening his back in fright.
“Can you tell us about the difference between mission and dispatch evaluations?”
Meilyn giggled in sweet karma and Simon and Camibarez quickly followed suit.
“Ah yes. The difference between a mission evaluation and a dispatch evaluation uhm…!”
As he thought on the question Rick broke out in a cold sweat before finally stammering out
“You you go alone in a mission assessment and you go to a dispatch assessment in a group of four… Isn’t it something like that?”
Jane simply gestured for him to sit down. Rick did as he was told with a soulless look on his face as held his hand over his racing heart.
“That is not the only difference. You will be visiting professional necromancers who are in active service having them as your mentors while you work on a real mission with them.”
The students began to clamor at the idea of a real mission with a professional.
“Kizen is well aware of how your mission assessments have been going until now.”
She then began reading another document she had placed on the table.
“Collaborating with the villagers making do with missions inside Roke Island involving things like picking up trash hunting rats and planting trees…”
Some of the students made guilty faces.
“Or proudly wearing your Kizen uniform as you guard some merchant caravan.”
Meilyn flinched.
“Or using the power of the Kizen’s name to fulfill requests or even intimidating clients to get their stamps.”
Rick looked away and gave an awkward laugh.
“If you’re a well-known student some nobles would invite you to their mansions by appointing you to unnecessary positions treating you lavishly and just giving you a mission completion form and the commission fee.”
Looking over the students with their heads bowed in reflection Jane continued
“I do understand.”

People in the Dark Territory would tremble at the mere mention of the name Kizen. Even first-years were treated with heavy respect.
In other words there would likely never be an equal relationship between a commissioner and the student who is being commissioned.
Of course many students fulfill their missions conscientiously but the fact that there’s an easy way to clear missions by abusing Kizen’s name was the problem itself.
“Originally warnings would be given to these students but… there’s a reason why we allowed the mission evaluation to turn into a mess like this. Because the integrated second semester is quite tough we allowed students to use it as a form of vacation period.”
Jane rolled up a pile of documents and slapped them against her palm.
“But! Things are going to be different on this dispatch evaluation.”
Jane explained the dispatch evaluation in detail.
As Rick had said before students would be free to organize themselves into groups of four. Then they would visit professional necromancers who act as mentors to the group.
The mentors will have the right to directly evaluate the students as they work with them on real missions.
Simon nodded as he listened to the explanation.
‘So it’s a mission evaluation with four people plus a leader.’
As he came to that conclusion a hand shot up in the lecture hall.
Before the hand was even fully raised Jane asked
“Do you have anything to say class president?”
Now even Jane was calling Jamie the class president.
“Yes Jamie Victoria ma’am! I was wondering what kind of specific missions we’ll be doing alongside the professionals!”
“Think of it as conducting the same kind of work that those professional necromancers would usually do.”
“I-I’m sorry but could you give us an example?”
“For example…”
Jane’s cold voice filled the room.
“Assassination of a key figure.”
Jamie’s eyes shook.
“Battle against priests spying on the Holy Federation transporting a heinous criminal wiping out gangs.”
Faces went pale all around the room as Jane went on.
“I will warn you in advance that more than 90% of the dispatch evaluations will take place in the neutral area. And the missions you’re used to the ones where you simply hunt monsters…”
Pausing for a moment to make sure that she had the full attention of the nervous students she declared
“…will not be available.”
Hurried whispers filled the room.
“You may have to kill someone on this mission. Of course I believe that the professionals will take care of that for you. Still if the situation is urgent and the professionals give you orders I expect you to obey them unconditionally.”
Jane looked around the students with serious eyes.
“If you disobey their instructions if you leave a bad enough impression on them that they give you a score of 0 or if you fail to fulfill your mission you’ll be up for explusion. If you cannot defend yourself properly before the disciplinary committee about why meeting these criteria was unreasonable for your mission you will be expelled immediately. Any other questions?”
Several students’ hands immediately went up.
“Scott Snyder ma’am! I believe the most important part of this evaluation is who our mentors will be. How will they be chosen?”
“It’s random. Of course we take into consideration the students’ backgrounds and families and try our best to select as many unaffiliated necromancers as possible as mentors. Next.”
“Cindi Vivace ma’am. What if the mentor gives us 0 intentionally? Are we going to be expelled helplessly?”
“First it is the student’s responsibility to behave oneself to make sure that doesn’t happen and second you’ll have to prove your innocence in front of the disciplinary committee. Next.”
This being such an important matter there were a lot of questions. But Jane as always had no problem answering them.
After a few more questions the bell that signals the end of class rang.
“Tomorrow is our school anniversary so I hope you will use that holiday wisely. I shall see you all the day after tomorrow.”
“Thank you!”
Jane and her assistant teachers left the lecture hall.
The moment they left the room erupted with voices.
“They’re giving students a professional’s job?”
“Just when we thought we got one tough thing out of the way we got another…”
As the students who remained in the room only got more and more anxious one of the assistant teachers who followed Jane poked her head back in and checked on the students.
Then she walked up to the stage with short and quick steps.
“Now now students. There’s no need to worry that much.”
She smiled kindly as she got everyone’s attention.
She was Jane’s chief assistant teacher and her outgoing personality and friendly demeanor with students made her particularly popular.
“Teacher!!”
“Are we actually going to fight a priest or kill someone?”
Questions and worries poured out of the students after feeling pressured by Jane’s concerning reveal. The assistant teacher smiled.
“Well Professor Jane did word it in a way that was excessively frightening to get you all thinking about this seriously. As long as you listen to your mentors and do what they say you’ll be fine. You guys already know that you should greet them properly answer clearly and be to polite with them as your seniors right?”
“Yes!!”
“Then it’s no big deal. Just pretend you’re going on a mission evaluation in a group of four with a guardian.”
The warmth coming from the chief assistant teacher was a healthy contrast to Jane’s coldness. They worked well as a combo.
Meanwhile the members of Group 7 were talking amongst themselves.
“I wonder which necromancer will be our mentor!”
Said Camibarez.
Rick stroked his chin.
“Hmmm I can’t really get a hunch since it’s a necromancer from the neutral area. Simon is there anyone you’re hoping for?”
“Me?”
Simon thought for a moment then answered
“I wonder if people from Vanilla would like to have us. I’d like to learn more about summoning circles.”
“Not a chance.”
Meilyn flatly shut him down.
“Professor Jane said that 90% of the mentors would be coming from neutral areas. The chances of getting an artisan mentor out of that remaining 10% would be practically impossible.”
Still coming to terms with the announcement Cami muttered
“…Haha the thought of going to the neutral area makes me a little scared. Have you three ever been to the neutral area?”
Meilyn and Rick shook their heads and Simon nodded without thinking.
All three of them immediately looked at him.
“Huh what? You’ve been there?’
“Wow! When? When have you been there?”
“Is it true that priests freely roam the streets?”
Simon belatedly realized his mistake.
He had stopped by while crossing the border to the Holy Federation but he couldn’t say that.
“It’s just that when I was really young… I stopped by with my parents. I barely remember anything now.”
“Ah~ Okay.”
Meilyn laughed off her previous curiosity.
“So this will practically be your first neutral area experience then?”
“I’m scared but also a little excited! I’ve heard it’s a great desert where very little grows. Except for a ton of cacti!”
“Oh but it’s a lawless area. Did you guys know? If you make eye contact with anyone there you should cast a spell before……”
Seeing that the conversation had shifted again Simon smiled along.

The central cathedral in Efnel.
During the mass.
“And now your Visit locations have been decided.”
Rahul the professor for Mechanics of Divinity stood on the stage and spoke out across the many Efnel students seated before her.
“Rete pay attention.”
“Okayy.”
Replied Rete who was sitting in the front as she uncrossed her legs. Rahul put her hand on her throbbing head and looked at the other students.
“The center of this Visit is the neutral area and you only have one primary mission.”
Rete’s eyes widened.
“To secure candidates for the next Saintess.”
