    Chapter 276

Lightly ignoring Professor Rahell’s order Rete slipped out of the chapel and strode briskly through the halls of the cathedral office.

    Murmur murmur murmur.

The Efnel students began to whisper as they spotted her.

Rete the First Chosen in her year level and a strong candidate for the next Saintess was the center of attention wherever she went.

    “Sister Rete!”

Just then a girl in a white Efnel uniform came running calling Rete’s name.

    “?”

Rete turned around with a bored face.

“Benedictio deae Sister Rete. May the blessings of the Goddess be with you!”

“Benedicto deae. Is there something up?”

    “Oh about that…”

    The girl blushed and mumbled

“Who are you going with on this Visit?”

In Efnel dispatch missions done down on the surface were called ‘Visits’.

    “No one~”

“What? It’s supposed to be a task done by a group of four!”

“It’s tiring. And if it’s something that takes four people then I can do it by myself.”

“As expected from you Sister Rete!”

It was already time for Visits… Things are gonna get bothersome.

Rete put her hands in her skirt pockets and yawned.

And it really did start getting bothersome. The Efnel students started flocking around her.

    “Benedicto deae Sister Rete!”

“Have you already formed a team?”

    “Sister Rete!”

It was a natural move as there was no better insurance than having Rete in the team.

Of course Rete had a cold response to this.

“I’m going alone so please leave me alone.”

As Rete gave her cynical reply and walked on a person accompanied by a much larger swarm of students than Rete had formed was walking up from the other direction.

It was a boy who was extremely popular in Efnel where less than one in five students were men.

His dazzling red hair fluttered in the wind his face was like a perfectly carved sculpture all the way down to the nose and his gentle smile was enough to melt a girl’s heart to the core.

Walking up from the opposite direction he spotted Rete and started a conversation with a smile.

“Benedicto deae Top-Student Rete! Good morning.”

He raised his hand and greeted her but Rete brushed past.

“Benedicto deae Romeng the Second-Best. It is a good morning so please go on your way.”

“Ahaha! Can I talk to you for a minute please?”

Rete ignored him and went on her way while Romeng walked behind her desperately trying to get her attention.

“What is it? I’m going to do this Visit by myself.”

“N-No it’s not that. I was just wondering how your sacred item project from Professor Renai was coming along.”

“That’s none of your business. Please excuse me.”

“Actually I just found a place to obtain ‘moon pearls’ that can be used as a material for rosary beads you see.”

Rete gave a slight reaction at the mention of moon pearls.

It was understandable. Moon pearls were sacred items of untold quality and if one could find even a single pearl they would get the top score for the project.

    He pulled out two tickets.

“I’m going to take the train down to the surface this evening. Do you want to come with?”

A few girls around him groaned in envy but Rete dismissed him with a cold wave of the hand.

“Congratulations in advance on your first place in the sacred-item crafting project. And didn’t it occur to you that if I took that precious thing as well your ranking would go down?”

    “It’s fine Rete.”

    Romeng winked.

“It’s a small consideration on my part as your only rival. Let’s get better together.”

    “Hah…”

Having Romeng still doggedly following her Rete was starting to get annoyed.

“I was trying to behave a little because Professor Rahul scolded me but you’re really acting up endlessly.”

    “R-Rete?”

“The fuck do you mean by rival? That’s ridiculous so stop bullshitting yourself.

There was no one she considered a rival at least not at this school.

“What else would the top and second best students be other than rivals?”

    Romeng laughed and added

“Also that white robe you’ve been wearing lately? It’s a little bit out of style.”

Romeng put a hand on her shoulder.

“I’ll buy you a new one when we get down to surfa—”

Romeng felt his vision suddenly flip upside down. A tremendous pain in his back and neck followed. When he came to his senses he was sprawled out on the floor.

“Just who do you think you’re touching with your filthy hands?”

    Spat Rete.

At the same time Romeng felt his waning patience snap too.

Just when he forcibly pushed himself up and was about to slap her across the cheek…

    Thud!

Her shoe slammed into his stomach forcing the wind out of his lungs.

    ‘I-I can’t brea—!’

    Yank.

Rete grabbed the back of Romeng’s head with one hand.

“This is what I like most about Efnel.”

    Smash!!!

Then she slammed his face into a glass wall. The tempered glass a material known for its toughness cracked and shattered.

“I don’t have to worry about killing a bastard.”

Her eyes filled with ice as she only strengthened her grip on Romeng’s head before dragging him to another pane of glass. This time Romeng’s nose broke first becoming a fine paste.

“Also I don’t have to worry about leaving any scars or marks on their face or body even if I just beat them up.”

Then just like that she walked on.

    Creeeeeaaaaaak…

Romeng’s face made a horrible sound as it slid down across the wall leaving a long line of blood on the wall like morbid paint.

“Even if I beat them almost to death it doesn’t bother me at all as the great healers of Efnel will bring them back from the edge.”

She barely used any light magic.

Just solid fundamentals in combat techniques backed up by a huge volume of divinity.

Romeng the second-best student couldn’t even fight back.

“It was a close fight as expected from my rival Romeng the Second-Best.”

She ended the torture with that as she wiped off a fleck of Romeng’s blood that had ungratefully landed on her cheek.

Romeng his face more blood than flesh was lying on the floor with his eyes rolled back into his head.

There was a deep silence around them.

Rete turned around and the Efnel students who had been watching quickly avoided her gaze.

“Hey sisters over there I need you to take this bastard to the healer.”

    “Y-Yes ma’am!”

The students rushed to help the fallen Romeng and Rete got out of the hall as her white hair fluttered behind her.

    Click!

Arriving at the door to her dorm room Rete opened it and walked in.

    “Benedictio deae~ Sister Rete!”

Her roommate who was scrawling down homework waved in greeting. Rete returned the greeting with a nod of her head.

    “Benedictio deae Lilinette.”

“Did something happen at school? It was pretty noisy.”

    “Beats me.”

Feigning ignorance Rete pulled off her robe and hung it on a hanger. The rob was white on the outside but a black lining was visible inside.

“Oh I got a letter from her so I left it on your desk.”

    “A letter?”

“Yes. The old lady who always comes to visit…”

    “!!!”

Rete’s face which had been expressionless all day suddenly lit up.

    “Don’t tell me!”

She scrambled over and saw the letter on the desk.

    Dear Rete

That exquisite elegant handwriting that exudes classiness. She recognized it in an instant.

After all she’d seen the handwriting thousands no tens of thousands of times.

    “Aaaaaah!! Teacherrrrrrr!”

    Finally a letter from Anna!

Rete was so happy that she jumped in joy with the letter in her arms.

To send a letter from the Dark Territory to the Holy Federation a somewhat unofficial route had to be utilized and the messenger was that old woman who had delivered the letter.

    Lilinette flashed a mischievous smile.

“I wonder how people would react if they found out that sister Rete actually had such a girlish side? I’m so curious!”

“You little—! I’m in a good mood so please shut up.”

She first went to take a bath to purify herself.

She wanted to read Anna’s letter with reverence.

After washing up and dressing in comfortable clothes she placed the letter on the floor and knelt down respectfully.

The one thing that kept her going through this tough life in Efnel.

    Her ray of light.

The thought of opening the letter made her heart race with excitement and drove her crazy.

    “By the way Sister Rete~”

Lilinette leaned back in her chair and initiated a conversation.

“Who is this letter from for it to make you so excited? Is it perhaps a guy?”

“Do you think I’m crazy? If you don’t want to be beaten please be quiet.”

She carefully pulled apart the envelope’s seal as if performing an extremely reverent ritual and unfolded the stiff letter.

Just looking at the elegant black handwriting on the white paper it was as if the world had been submerged in the substance called happiness.

Hello Rete! It’s me Teacher Anna. How are things going in Efnel these days?

    “Ahhhhhh!”

Rete squealed with delight as she read the letter. A huge smile formed on her face.

Just then as she went to continue reading the letter in her world full of lollipops and bubblegum…

    Flop.

Another letter fell out of the envelope.

Turns out there were two letters. Rete looked at the last sentence with strange eyes.

Also Simon wrote a letter saying you should definitely read it. I’m enclosing it alongside my own.

    “…!!”

She blinked in surprise and her face slightly stiffened.

    ‘A-A letter from that bastard?’

    She was incredibly confused.

Who is he to send me a letter that I should definitely read?

What is he planning to say…?

Having the hesitance of someone about to touch a live bomb she carefully extended her arm to the dropped letter.

    Tremble.

Her arm was shaking so bad. She quickly pulled back her hand—she didn’t manage to grab the letter before pulling out—and held it in front of her chest in embarrassment.

‘Wh-What’s going on? Why am I nervous?’

Her heart was pounding out of nowhere. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead too.

After hesitating to pick up the letter a few times…

‘Ugh dammit! What am I doing hurting my own pride?!’

She bravely grabbed the letter and tore it open. Then she read the contents.

    Hello Rete. How are you?

Her eyes shook with the force of an earthquake.

Thanks for helping me out during the holidays! I’ll be forever grateful to you. Please send my regards to Israfill too. How’s Ran? You pop onto my mind at times. I miss you.

    I miss you.

    I miss you…

    I miss you my ass!

Rete bit her lip and read further down the letter.

    However…

Her expression grew cold as she continued.

Remember the evidence we got from the train? Can you see if you can find the name ‘Judas’ on it?

    “Ah! This bastard honestly!”

She hurled the letter against the wall. He had barely written his greetings at the start and the rest was just a bunch of things he wanted to ask for.

Trembling with rage she paused for a moment.

‘But why am I feeling disappointed at him for writing a short greeting?’

While Rete was spacing out her roommate Lilinette furtively read the letter Rete had thrown away.

“Oh! It’s a guy! This is a man’s handwriting isn’t it? Wow what is this? You pop onto my mind at times? I miss you?> Kyaaaaaah!!!”

Rete raised her arm her hand glowing a blinding white.

With a brilliant flash of light the air opened up and her divine beast the baby dragon ‘Ran’ came out and wrapped itself around Lilinette.

    “Kyaaaaaaaaah!”

She was immediately subdued by Ran being lifted above the ground in the process.

    “I told you…”

Began Rete her eyes blazing with anger as she picked up Simon’s letter.

    “To be quiet.”

“Waaaaaaah! P-Please forgive me Sister Rete!”

    “I won’t!”

Rete began to tickle Lilinette’s exposed armpits gently. Face quickly becoming flushed with blood Lilinette twisted her whole body and howled with laughter.

    “Hahahaha! Ahh! Hahah! H-Help…!”

“I have a favor to ask.”

Said Rete giving brief respite to the tickle torture. Lilinette tears forming in the corners of her eyes from laughter quickly replied

“Please go ahead and issue the order Sister Rete.”

“You said your uncle is an active inquisitor right? Could you please contact him?”

Eventually Lilinette was released in exchange for contact with her uncle.

“By the way what do you need with my uncle?”

    “Just do it.”

Lilinette pulled out her communication crystal ball and called her uncle.

“Yes yes uncle! I’m doing fine. Yes a friend of mine wanted to talk to you.”

    “I’m Rete.”

Rete stuck her head in and snatched the communication crystal ball from Lilinette’s hand. A thick old man’s laugh could be heard from the crystal ball.

[Hahaha! Rete? I’ve heard a lot from my niece!]

    “Like what?”

[That the First Chosen who’s assigned to the same room as my dear is so bad-tempered—]

    “Ran.”

    “Kyaaaaaaaaaaaah!”

Lilinette was strung up by Ran again and Rete hid the torment behind her back so Lilinette’s uncle wouldn’t see his niece’s humiliation.

    Then Rete continued

“I want you to find a person.”

[Of course. It’s a favor from my niece’s friend. Who?]

    Her face turned serious.

“A man named Methyn. An inquisitor.”
