Chapter 275
“Can you use divinity?”
“…!!”
At Farahann’s question Simon felt all the hairs on his neck stand on end.
How in the world did he find out?
Simon desperately maintained his smile but the corners were beginning to twitch.
His mouth felt dry and a heavy weight filled his throat but he managed to squeeze out a sentence.
“I’m not so sure what you’re talking about Professor.”
“Haha!”
The old man who had suddenly become an object of fear for Simon smiled benevolently as he stroked his beard.
“I have lived with divinity all my life. I can sense a faint energy of divinity from you. And above all when I touched your body in class earlier…”
Farahann opened his palm.
“The extreme rejection that a necromancer should experience didn’t happen. Apart from your reaction of being in pain your body accepted my divinity without resistance.”
Simon’s face turned pale. So it was the kind of training to figure that out.
“I understand what you’re worried about.”
Said Farahann in a tender voice.
“You may just call the whole thing off and leave this place. This old man has no intention of harming the young man with a long road ahead of him.”
“…”
Simon still didn’t let down his guard. He couldn’t confirm anything easily.
He doesn’t know whether Professor Farahann can be trusted or not and he doesn’t know what the man might do to him either.
But he thought pretending he couldn’t use divinity wouldn’t work in front of this person. He was a master of divinity and it must’ve been with some certainty that he had arranged this kind of meeting.
‘Actually once the Professor of Defense Against the Holy Arts tells the Kizen HQ that’s the end.’
Kizen has become extremely sensitive to spies with the recent incident with the Saintess. If he were to be interrogated as a divinity user even the truth about Richard and Anna might spill forth.
Reading Simon’s hesitance Farahann stood up.
“Perhaps this old man was too impatient. You may leave for today.”

“…”
Should I leave for now and prepare for next time?
No.
Since he knew the secret there was no point in dragging it out.
“I’d like to…”
Simon didn’t leave his seat.
“…hear what you have to say professor.”
Farahann’s eyes glistened at that. It wasn’t an answer but it was a very positive start.
“You’re not like the youngsters these days. Not many of you have the patience to talk to an old man like me.”
He began to take off the immaculate robe he wore.
“Looks like I must first tell you about my current condition to gain your trust.”
Flutter!
When Farahann took his robe off revealing his torso Simon had to hold back his gasp of surprise.
His chest stomach and every other inch of his skin was covered with countless ‘Soul Bind’ magic circles each of them swirling with powerful jet-black.
“As you can see my life is in the hands of Kizen HQ.”
Said Farahann.
“Just one move and this old man will immediately return to the soil.”
“A-Aren’t they going too far? Even if—”
“I’m grateful for it.”
Farahann stroked his beard.
“After betraying the Federation we were left with nowhere to go. The necromancers didn’t really have to spare us either. But Nefthis herself showed mercy on us.”
He laughed soundly.
“Here I am with my life intact on the other side of the world with a decent job and I’m using my knowledge for the young people don’t you see? My last days are happier than any of my many years.”
“…”
“The same spells have been applied to my assistant teachers of course. The Soul Bind is a method of control from Kizen HQ attached to us in exchange for allowing us to work at the school. Parents wouldn’t just sit still if priests were let loose on Kizen without any restraints.”
His gaze turned to Simon.
“As a divinity user among the necromancers you and I are in a similar situation. I believe this old man can sympathize with and understand your plight more than anyone else.”
He wore a calm smile and a simple expression.
Seeing someone so perfectly able to convey their true feelings to another made Simon realize that age truly did carry a wisdom that could not be ignored.
Simon sighed softly and responded
“…What do you want from me?”
“You got the question the wrong way around.”
Farahann smiled.
“What do you want from me?”
“!”
“You’re a student and I’m a professor. You’re the learner and I’m the teacher. Yes for example…”
Farahann despite the sound barrier leaned in close and whispered

“I can formally teach you light magic if you wish.”
Light magic…
Simon’s heart began to pound beating fast.
“I don’t deny your existence as one who can wield both the jet-black and the divinity. Do you believe in fate?”
Simon shook his head.
“N-No.”
“I believe that the Goddess must’ve given you a necromancer divinity for a very good reason. To put it more bluntly…”
Farahann furrowed his brow.
“I can’t help but think that the reason this old man was brought to Kizen before I took my last breath was to meet you.”
So much was happening that Simon’s thoughts struggled to keep up.
An offer for secret light-magic tutoring…
[Kuhahahahaha!]
Suddenly he heard Pier’s boisterous laughter in his head. Simon jolted upright in surprise.
‘Y-You startled me Pier! How long have you been listening?’
[That old man is truly insane! Teaching light magic in Kizen the sanctuary of necromancers? Kuhehehehe!]
Simon thought for a moment then asked
‘Are you against it Pier?’
[I have no reason to be! I’ve experienced the bizarre strength of ‘Divine Undead’. Plus you’ve used that skill you called ‘Celestial Explosion’ too. You’re already too heavily involved in divinity to step back.]
Above everything else Simon remembered Anna’s words.
“Half of you is me my son. So I hope you’ll take some interest in where I was born and raised.”
Even if he denied it one half of him was already a priest.
Above all divinity was also his asset. Even if he became a necromancer he thought he didn’t need to ignore this power.
He wanted to learn everything he could.
“…Professor I.”
With a trembling voice but a determined look Simon faced Farahann.
“I’d like to learn light magic.”
As if he was waiting for that answer Farahann smiled pleasantly and nodded.
Farahann did some simple tests with Simon.
He needed to know what level of light magic Simon was at so he could direct the lessons to target the relevant strengths and weaknesses in Simon’s technique.
“Amazing! Absolutely amazing!”
Farahann couldn’t help but be astonished.
Although Simon didn’t specialize in any one subject he had a wide range of skills. Starting from the most basic skill he could form a perfectly standard divine arrow.
He also had the basics of healing knew the blessings of Strength Haste and Endurance and he could also use the defense skills of guarding.
He had such a wide range of skills because he hadn’t been taught to be a priest but rather to act like one in the Holy Federation.
“Your basics are great. I’d believe you if you said you were a first-year priest at Efnel!”
Indeed Simon had fooled countless inquisitors in the Federation before.
“I don’t know who taught you these but you learned it really well.
Simon furtively smiled. At the same time he was grateful to Farahann for not asking who he’d learned from.
Farahann moved his quill frantically.
“I’m getting excited from the mere thought of doing a light magic lecture after so long. By the way do you have any particular discipline of light magic you’d like to specialize in? Though it’s also fine to improve your overall level of light magic as it is.”
“Hmmm I wonder…”
Simon thought for a moment then decided
“Is there… a way for me to learn how to use divine beasts?”
“It is possible but we would require a divine beast to even begin classes. Finding a divine beast in the Dark Territory is nigh impossible.”
“I figured.”
Simon decided to learn all the subjects evenly and see if he had an aptitude for any of Efnel’s seven subjects.
‘I didn’t think I’d be talking about light magic in Kizen.’
Simon lifted his head and looked out the window.
‘I wonder how Rete is doing?’
* * *
Sky island.
Efnel HQ.
“Great. How… great.”
Rahell an archbishop of the Holy Federation and a professor for Mechanics of Divinity had a big frown on her face. A female student neatly dressed in a white Efnel uniform was sitting on a chair in front of her.
“Look at all the trouble you’ve caused this week.”
Slide.
Said Rahell laying down a series of reports across her desk. The female student glanced to the side and gave her a rebellious look.
“Assaulting a classmate assaulting one of your seniors assault assault.”
Rahell put a hand to her forehead and sighed.
“Why do you keep fighting people like this Rete?”
The girl with hair as white as snow and eyes of gold snorted.
“This one they picked a fight with me first. And this one? He kept on bugging me saying he was going to confess to me so I just beat him up. You know dating in Efnel is a school rule violation that even you don’t like Professor.”
“Violence is a bigger school rule violation!”
Shouted Rahell before clutching her throbbing head.
“For the Goddess’s sake you’re a First Chosen student at Efnel and a lady to boot! Please act like one!! What are you a 6-year-old boy who keeps getting into fights? Why do you keep beating people up?! Have some dignity. Dignity!”
“Are you not allowed to beat up people if you’re a lady?”
At Rete’s cynical grumblings sparks flew in Rahell’s eyes.
“Rete!”
“Honestly I think Efnel is too stiff and inflexible. There are certain rules to dress for your position status and gender and if you can’t follow them there comes nagging.”
“You already know it well Rete! A reverent mind comes from a reverent body! It’s the very core of being a priest!”
“It doesn’t increase my divinity even if I act that solemnly and my divinity hasn’t changed even after I started beating people up.”
Rahell sighed heavily. She wondered what had gotten into Rete.
Although temperamental and rough Rete had always been pious as a priest. However that changed at some point.
Yeah maybe it started in the vacation… After vacation in the second semester Rete seemed to question everything Efnel and the Holy Federation enforced.
Who had she met and what had influenced her?
“You don’t seem to be reflecting your actions in the slightest.”
Rahell coldly stared at her.
Rete is a key talent in the Efnel a big shot who will lead the Federation one way or another in the future.
Although the next ‘Saintess of Purification’ hadn’t appeared yet she was certainly an overwhelming candidate to take the mantle.
It was getting on Rahell’s nerves that the higher-ups were bugging her asking if she was taking care of Rete properly. She thought it was better to fix her habits before she became a Saintess: a demigod.
“Kneel Rete.”
“Okay…”
Replying in a monotone voice Rete got off the chair and knelt on the floor with a blank expression.
“I’ll order 12 hours of fasting and prayer upon you. As you pray to the Goddess be sure to reflect on what you’ve done wro—”
“Professor Rahell!”
The door burst open and a monk rushed in and whispered something into Rahell’s ear. Immediately his frown deepened.
“I’ll be there immediately.”
Rahell stood up and glared at Rete who was still kneeling.
“Remember it’s 12 hours.”
“Okay. Have a safe trip~”
Said Rete clasping her hands together and preparing to pray.
Rahell quickly walked out with the monk.
“Huzzah.”
She stood up and strode to the door on the side without looking back.
“You think I’m crazy enough to do that kind of stupid shit?”
