    Chapter 269

    Elsewhere.

In the outermost regions of the test area a pack of four monsters swam by.

They were level 4 reptilian monsters that resembled saltwater crocodiles ‘hard diles’.

However these diles weren’t moving based on their own instinct. No someone was controlling them.

[Initiate Plan A. Avenge brother Talahze. No matter the cost.]

It was Alahze one of the Ancient Undeads in Magnus’ Legion.

Alahze had the power to control any monster or undead that had consumed its flesh.

[Monster Duke’s lair discovered. Initiating operation.]

Where the crocodilians went was an underwater cave deep down in the ocean. The monsters all entered the cave.

    Rrrrrrrumble!

Soon after they entered the entire cave began to shake violently as if in the center of an earthquake.

    [Standby].

    Briefly ordered Alahze.

Something was worming its way out from the pitch black darkness of the seemingly endless cave. It was like a train emerging from a dark tunnel and the diles were stuck on the tracks.

Soon a giant snout emerged swallowing the crocodiles in a single bite.

    Crunch! Crunch!

Even the slightest twitch of its jaw ripped sinew and cracked bones until there was nothing left of its appetizer.

When the monster was finished it slipped back into the cave.

All that remained was silence and a stain of red blood in the water.

“Hello again everyone! With the end of our short intermission let me remind you all of the rules for the third BDMAT!”

The announcer was shouting into a loudspeaker crystal ball that could be heard all across the Kizen campus and a large crowd was gathered in the spectator seats in front of him.

“As you’ve all seen the first half of the test was a race to collect coins! But the future stages of the test will be on an expansive battlefield because students will be hunting sea monsters and competing for points!”

As he gestured up to the mass of projections the main screen flicked to the image of a nautical chart for the area.

A circle was drawn in the center of the chart with a small hole in one side of it. Beyond the circle was a vast ocean.

“The center circle you see is the ‘inner sea’ which is where the coin battle took place! The water is shallow so even students can easily reach the bottom! Outside the circle is the ‘outer sea’ the real ocean and full of sea monsters! You can earn points by hunting monsters there and of course students can cooperate with each other if they wish!”

The main screen changed again. A group of students was shown hunting monsters in the outer sea all of them were on small wooden boats.

“Of course there are no platforms in the outer sea! However if you pay 500 points using the tongue pad Kizen will drop a small wooden boat enough for 1 person from the sky. With that you can take a break in the outer sea and control your pace! It seems that Kizen has anticipated our brave students’ troubles and taken care to help them focus on their tests! Now next let’s go through the types of monsters in the outer sea!”

The screen to the left flickered before showing a list of all of the monsters known to be in the ocean as well as the points students got for hunting them.

“There are so many different types of monsters in the waters ranging from level 2 to level 5! Ah Professor Jane what is that?”

Asked the MC while pointing at the monster on the very top of the list. Jane held up her loudspeaker crystal ball and answered

“It’s the ‘monster duke’ a level 5 monster. It only comes out of its cave for about two hours a year. I doubt we will see it during the test so you can ignore it.”

After saying that Jane sighed heavily.

She couldn’t help but think that it was a poorly done prank by Kizen HQ to put a monster on the list that the students wouldn’t be able to hunt. They weren’t even sure if it was in these waters in the first place.

“Ohh! You can get 100000 points from hunting it? That’s incredible!! Ordinary level 2 and 3 monsters are worth 100 to 500 points but 100000 points? If anyone’s able to hunt that they’ll definitely get the highest rank!”

Meanwhile Simon was conserving his stamina in the inner sea. Around him he could see a few students desperately struggling to find coins.

The test was four hours long and the deimos could be used for barely two hours.

He had to control his pace as much as possible.

Checking his tongue pad he saw that many students were already gaining points meaning they had gone to the outer sea to hunt monsters. The rankings were changing rapidly too.

‘Well then I should get going too.’

Finally Simon started moving. There were around two hours left in the test so he figured it was a good time to head out to the open sea.

Simon got on top of the deimos and rode out to sea.

    ‘Gaassp!’

As he took a deep breath before activating his air magic circle and dove down into the water the sea swarmed with the venomous squid monster ‘pulpa’.

Simon squeezed his legs tight around the deimos’ body as he aimed his Bone Armor Handgun that he quickly formed in his right hand.

    Pshk! Pshk!

One shot one kill. He streaked past hunting down pulpae with frightening speed and accuracy. It was 300 points per creature so he took full advantage of this moment.

Of course their poisonous mist didn’t do any damage to Simon his body already prepared to neutralize everything.

‘Hopefully this BDMAT will change people’s perceptions of Professor Belya.’

After hunting the swarm of pulpae and chasing them as they escaped Simon resurfaced. He was about to reach the open sea where the monsters gave many more points.

    ‘I can see it now!’

Visually the inner sea and the outer sea could be told apart by the color of their water. While the inner sea surrounded by a barrier Kizen had set up was a light turquoise so clear and transparent that one could see all the way to the bottom the outer sea was just a navy blue that was eerily devoid of other features.

It felt like the sea would gaze back into your soul if you looked into it too long.

    “?”

However the area that connected the inner sea and outer sea was full of boats.

The students who had purchased the boats with 500 points mostly stayed in place not venturing further into the open sea.

    Simon moved toward them.

Several students in small wooden boats gave him envious glances when they saw the skeletal whale.

As he slowly made his way forward he checked to see if he recognized any faces.

    Fortunately there was one.

    “Toto!”

Toto jumped when he heard someone shouting his name before turning around. Immediately his face turned pale.

    “S-Simon?! What is that?”

    “Oh.”

    Simon made an awkward smile.

    “It’s a skeleton made with a deimos.”

Toto gasped in surprise looking back and forth between Simon and the deimos with half admiration half envy.

“That’s amazing! So you’re pushing summoning even in the ocean huh?!”

After saying that he suddenly looked dejected and hung his head low.

“I switched to Mechanics of Jet-Black right away when I heard of the ocean theme though.”

“Haha I don’t think there’s a right answer to a question like this. You were just being clever.”

Toto looked like he wanted to touch the deimos but the whale was wary so he only fidgeted with his hands.

“But Toto why is everyone stopping here? Is there something wrong?”

    “Oh you see…”

Toto pointed ahead with a frightened look on his face.

    “I think there’s something… up ahead.”

    “What?”

Right in time a male student bravely paddled his boat to the outer sea.

He looked back at his teammates who were waiting in horror.

“Ugh you pussies! See? I told you it was okay to g—!”

    Craaassshhh!

Those were effectively the boy’s last words.

His small little dinghy was pulled down into the ocean with him still inside it never to resurface.

    “Huh??!”

“What the fuck?!! What was that!!!”

Several students started to turn their boats around out of fright.

“I think it’s better to just collect points in the inner sea.”

    “R-Right!”

The students changed direction and started to return. Toto did the same whipping his ship around.

“Looks like there’s something in there Simon. Maybe it’s better if you back off for now and return in an hour or s—”

    Just then.

A dark shadow appeared beneath the fleeing students.

    “!”

Its large figure surrounded what had to be a hundred students.

Simon felt all the hairs on his body stand on end.

The other students’ faces were also pale with fear.

They began to scream and run away.

    ‘Get out of here deimos!’

Simon’s deimos also shot out at full speed and then…

    Bwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!

The ocean rose like a tidal wave and a giant monster’s mouth snapped up at the surface.

    “Aaaahhhhh!”

    “Nooooo!”

Many students fell into the monster’s gaping maw which then locked shut. Teleportation could be heard activating all around.

Simon on his deimos narrowly dodged a sharp tooth and shot across the sea quickly fleeing on the surface.

[Kuhahahaha! This is fun! This is so much fun! Kizen has to be this crazy that’s right!]

    ‘It’s not fun for me!’

Just then the monster’s head turned.

The large vertical pupils of a reptilian creature resembling a sea lizard or a dragon stared directly at Simon.

    ‘Don’t tell me…’

    Grrrroooooooooaaaaaaah!!!

The creature began to chase Simon across the ocean. Any student unlucky enough to be in the way had their boats smashed out from under them and their barrier gauges fell drammically.

“Deimos! Let’s go into the ocean.”

Commanded Simon after turning his air magic circle on. He stroked the skeleton on the head to calm its non-existent nerves and then it immediately went under.

    ‘!’

Simon’s jaw dropped as he finally got a good look at the thing.

It was an enormous mass of flesh with flippers the size of a building pushing it forward. Suddenly compared to that monstrosity the ocean didn’t look quite so vast.

    ‘That has to be it.’

    Simon’s eyes widened.

‘It’s the 100000 point monster at the top of the list the monster duke.’

    Pier burst into raucous laughter.

Simon turned around again to see what the monstrosity was doing. Energy was gathering in its gaping maw.

‘It’s not fair if you can use a breath attack as well!’

Simon quickly gave an absolute order to the deimos. It immediately dived even deeper and almost at the same time a beam of unstoppable currents shot straight above them exploding in a huge blast after a couple hundred feet.

    ‘Woah.’

    Simon was dumbfounded.

It was like a hole had been punched in the ocean.

‘Are they really telling students to hunt that?’

The truth was the monster duke lives only in the caverns of the ocean floor so it rarely harms humans.

That was why humans had arbitrarily categorized it as a level 5 but its actual strength was far above that.

‘I’ll try running as far away as possible for now.’

    * * *

    “Waaaaaaaah!”

The crowd’s cheering only grew louder at the sudden appearance of this huge event.

Simon’s battle with a gargantuan monster – the monster duke.

“Simon’s deimos is also really fast! It’s similar to or even slightly faster than the monster duke! Who else would even survive a second against this new lord of the ocean?! Besides!!!”

The MC continued with extreme exhilaration as he gestured wildly

“If the monster travels to the inner sea it would be a huge disaster and basically mark the end of the test itself! But look Simon is single-handedly luring that monster to the outer sea! He’s sacrificing himself to protect the ordinary students! How truly moral of him! This is the dignity of the Special Admission No.1”

With the MC wrapping things up on his own and the audience cheering for Simon’s heroism Jane was the only one who was sane.

‘You think that’s luring? It’s already weird enough that the monster duke has appeared and it’s only pursuing Simon.’

    She was right.

Simon was all over the place trying to get away and the creature kept firing breath attack after breath attack at him.

Every time it did the sea would split and surge. Fish and monsters alike would be caught up in the onslaught their corpses rising to the surface.

She pulled a new communication crystal ball out from her pocket.

    “This is Jane.”

[Yes ma’am! This is the testing center!]

“100000 points or whatever I think we need to kill the monster duke before it does more damage to the entire test.”

[I’ll relay it right away to the head proctor.]

If it was the usual Jane would have sent agents under her authority but since she was also acting as a first-year professor she has no right to be involved in the test. The BDMAT was organized solely by the headquarters.

A few moments later the reply came.

[The proctor wants to wait and see.]

“What? Are you out of your mind?”

    [Ah. You see…]

The voice in the crystal ball paused for a moment before answering

[That student? Simon Polentia? It looks like he’s trying to fight the monster duke.]

    “What did you say?”

Jane looked at the screen urgently.
