    Chapter 268

At the same time as Simon was riding off on his deimos.

    “Phew!”

Meilyn who had just surfaced after diving down to the bottom of the ocean grunted as she climbed up onto the platform.

The moment she surfaced she replenished her air supplies and checked her tongue pad.

‘Six coins now. I’m picking up around two every time I go down.’

The early phase’s intense ‘free-for-all’ had died down and everyone was now focused on finding coins.

By now some students would have collected all ten coins and headed to the outer sea to hunt for points.

‘I need to move quickly before all the monsters in the outer sea get eliminated.’

Having fully filled her air magic circle Meilyn jumped back into the ocean.

    Splash!

She saw a school of fish swimming nearby. The sunlight shining on them reflected off their scales scattering light into a beautiful natural wonder.

If it weren’t for the test Meilyn would have taken more time to enjoy the sights. But unfortunately she didn’t have any time for that.

Using the flippers that Rick invented Melyn quickly made her way to the bottom of the sea.

Although it was at the bottom of the sea fortunately the water wasn’t all that deep. Getting there wasn’t the hard part.

The hard part was getting attacked by competitors or sea monsters.

    ‘No one’s there right?’

After checking her surroundings Meilyn slowly swam forward scanning the sea floor carefully.

Perhaps Kizen had done something to the water: she could see clearly in what should be murky depths.

However finding the coins buried in the sand was still tough. She couldn’t count how many times she had cursed Kizen while searching through the sand.

    ‘Ah.’

Meilyn who was scanning the ground paused for a moment. There was sand on the side that was slowly rising and falling with the current.

    ‘That’s definitely a monster.’

She formed a magic circle on her thigh and brought her hand to it. Then like drawing a pistol she transferred the circle to her hand and activated it.

    ‘Ice Bolt!’

A shard of ice shot out like an arrow and landed right in the center of the shaking ground.

    The reaction was immediate.

The giant stingray that had been hiding now wriggled in agony as it shot out from the sand.

    ‘Good.’

One of the symbols on the magic circle in her hand disappeared representing her using some of its ammo. Nine shots remained.

‘Ice Bolt! Ice Bolt! Ice Bolt!’

Even underwater the sound of sharp projectiles ripping through flesh filled Meilyn’s ears. The monster didn’t stand a chance.

However it still took four shots to kill one creature so it was a bit inefficient. However there was no avoiding inefficiency in the ocean. Everyone would be struggling with that equally.

After checking the points on her tongue pad Meilyn thoroughly scanned the area where the monster was.

    ‘I knew it!’

She yelled in delight. There was a coin on the floor where the monster was hiding.

She picked it up carefully and held it in front of the tongue pad on her wrist. A tongue darted out of the pad and ate it.

Storing coins in your subspace would be a disqualification. The students had to store them in a tongue pad or keep their coins on themselves.

‘I also got points from hunting a monster. Let’s go for the next one right away!’

Meilyn was generally in the higher ranks among the masses.

At the beginning of the test while the students were carried away fighting she conserved her energy by waiting on a platform.

Then when the competition between students died down and they were exhausted she set off. She quickly moved back and forth between the platform and the sea to retrieve as many coins as she could.

Her face was still burning red from the harsh critique from Jane after her last BDMAT.

Pacing. Pacing is key. She was determined to never make the same mistake again.

    ‘I found one more!’

Meilyn spotted a coin entangled in a patch of seaweed.

Meily quickly went toward it but this time again a monster was hiding nearby. A purple squid creature popped out of nowhere and spewed poisonous ink at her.

    ‘Ugh! Again?’

    Pulpa. A level 3 monster.

They were the most common monsters in this sea but that didn’t make them any less terrifying. Instead of using its ink as a smokescreen it would go on the offensive poisoning fish and human alike for a tasty meal.

But even with poison splattered across her face Meilyn simply aimed with her right arm.

    ‘Ice Bolt!’

    Pshk!

The pulpa froze as the shard of ice stabbed straight into its bulbous head.

Meilyn then swam up on top of it grabbed the ice bolt with both her hands and shoved it deeper into its body.

Green blood spurted out and the monster went limp. As she reached the bottom of the sea she breathed a sigh of relief.

‘I’m totally fine even if I get poisoned. I guess it’s all thanks to Professor Belya huh?’

Having to eat poisons was confusing at times but now not just Meilyn but everyone was seeing the results of it in their bodies.

In fact every student who had taken Professor Belya’s Poisonous Alchemy classes had been unharmed by the pulpas’ poison. The students who were in other professors’ Poisonous Alchemy classes were not so lucky many of them desperately swimming to the surface to make an antidote.

Meilyn realized that she felt bad for resenting Belya.

‘After I get a good score on this test I should go thank her.

    The search continued.

It took a while but she found another coin and now she had nine.

She only needed to find one more coin to move on to the outer seas but when she checked the remaining amount of air magic circle she drew on her wetsuit she realized that she would have to resurface.

‘Ah~ It’s a bit of a waste to go up like this though. Are there any nearby?

It was then when she was searching the floor in a last-minute effort.

    Swaaaaaaaaaaah.

A group of colorful fish suddenly swam past her. Meilyn turned around wondering what was going on.

    “!”

Behind the fleeing fish a monster more than twice her size appeared.

It was a gamban a level 4 shark monster. Sticking out its mouth was a leg presumably belonging to a Kizen student it had swallowed.

    “…!”

Meilyn was so startled that she froze. Soon the student’s barrier gauge depleted and he was teleported somewhere.

The monster chomped through empty space in anger as its prey suddenly disappeared. Then it spotted Meilyn standing stiffly nearby and charged at her.

    ‘Kugh!’

She quickly swam away but there was no way a human could outpace a gamban in the sea.

    ‘I have to fight!’

Determined she checked her remaining ammo for the ice bolt.

Having dealt with a few other pulpa on the way she only had two shots left.

Spinning around to face the beast she looked between a gap in her fingers to aim the spell. The gamban was coming straight at her and it was already opening its mouth ready to sink its teeth into the new prey.

    ‘Ice Bolt!’

The two ice bolts shot forward and slammed into the gamban’s trunk but they only drew a small amount of blood and further enraged it.

    ‘Argh!’

The gamban’s sharp teeth bit down on her right arm.

Her barrier gauge fell rapidly turning from green to yellow.

    ‘I-I’m gonna get knocked out!’

She punched the gamba as hard as she could with her free arm but it didn’t even flinch.

The barrier gauge the one thing separating her from victory and expulsion was now under half. She couldn’t afford to lose all her coins and points like this.

    ‘S-Somebody!’

    Flutter!

    Fwhip!

Just when she was truly cornered a strange green whip came down from above and wrapped around the gamban like a snake.

As Meilyn looked up in surprise she saw a familiar woman with her hands spread wide as a magic circle activated in front of her.

    She was none other than…

    ‘Claudia!’

The gamban wrapped in a green whip writhed in pain. Unable to withstand the poison rushing into it the strength in the shark’s jaw began to weaken.

Meilyn could see Claudia signaling to Meilyn with her eyes.

‘I’m not so sure what’s going on but…!’

    Meilyn mustered up her courage.

It was the perfect opportunity to pull her arm out!

So instead she pushed it deeper into the gamban’s mouth activating the most basic of spells in her hand.

    {Freeze}

The shark’s insides began to rapidly cool and the writhing only increased.

Species that live in warm waters like this are sensitive to sudden changes in temperature.

‘There’s no way it could withstand freezing from inside out!’

The poison combined with a lethal dosage of ice…

It died in a matter of seconds.

    ‘Gotcha!’

As the monster was slain the points increased on each of their tongue pads. The 1000 points for killing a gamban were split between the two giving them 500 points each.

Meilyn had successfully defeated the creature but she wasn’t ready to let her guard down yet.

She again looked up this time wary as she stared at Claudia.

‘What is she planning to do? If she’s after my coins…’

But Claudia didn’t make any aggressive moves. Instead she smiled and pointed upward.

    Bubble!

Meilyn’s air reserves were close to empty. With no other options Meilyn swam up and Claudia followed.

    Soon…

    “Gaaaasssspp!”

Meilyn sucked in as much air as she could after breaching the surface. She’d almost died.

Claudia came up for air next to her as well.

    “…”

There was an awkward silence between the two girls for a moment.

Meilyn kept her mouth shut and pretended to look somewhere else but she couldn’t stay silent for long.

    “Hey thanks for saving me…”

    “Sorry about before Meilyn.”

Meilyn’s eyes widened at what Claudia said.

“…You know for when I tried to make your actions about grades and all that. I’m not so sure if you’ll accept this or not but I’m sorry. I apologize.”

Finally being able to get this off her chest Claudia felt her heart lighten.

Realizing that Claudia’s recent bout of over-sensitive arguments were over Meilyn silently laughed.

“Forget it! Why are you doing stuff so against your character? I’ve heard people die when they suddenly act differently.”

“Even apologizing is now a problem huh?!!”

Claudia shouted back with a blush then looked up into the sky with a serious face.

“I decided to stop the boycott.”

“After bustling all around blabbering about student rights?”

“Ugh!! I don’t know I must have gone crazy for a second. I’m embarrassed as hell and…”

Claudia opened her palm. The magic circle for the Poison Whip she had just used was pulsating.

“I think I’ve been misunderstanding Professor Belya.”

    “Hmm…”

As Meilyn began to smirk another student approached from behind them secretly preparing a curse.

Just as he was about to fire the curse the two of them turned around simultaneously letting loose the spells they prepared in an instant.

    {Ice Bolt}

    {Poison Whip}

A barrage of poison and ice pounded against the boy’s barrier.

In an instant his gauge dropped to zero and he was teleported away before he could even fire his curse.

    “Piss off.”

Meilyn began to howl with maniacal laughter.

Claudia laughed along with her. Then she pursed her lips for a moment and mustered up the courage to suggest an idea.

“Meilyn would you like to team up for this test?”

Meilyn thought for a moment ran a hand through her hair and gave a small nod.

She had apologized and made peace so there was no reason to refuse.

The two clasped hands in unity.

    * * *

    ‘Over there!’

    ‘There’s another coin over there!’

A group of students in wet suits were exploring the bottom of the ocean in teams of three.

    ‘Finally I got a—!’

    Whiiish!

All of a sudden something passed by along with the flood of bubbles and the coin on the bottom disappeared. The students’ eyes turned toward the quickly disappearing figure that had grabbed it.

    ‘Wh-What was that?

‘Someone riding a skeleton? In the ocean?’

While other students swam up and down over and over again to slowly accumulate coins only Simon was running through the ocean at breakneck speed collecting the coins in one fell swoop.

‘Is he taking the same test as us?’

    ‘He’s in a different genre.’

He paused for a moment to search the bottom of the ocean and then picked up his tenth coin.

He had reached the minimum requirement.

‘Deimos! Let’s go to the surface.’

The deimos’ head turned upward and then it soared up with lightning speed. The students who were swimming on their own looked on at the scene in envy.

    Splaasshh!

In a flash he was at the surface. Simon pointed to a nearby platform and the deimos led him to it.

    “That’s a good skeleton.”

As he landed on the platform Simon patted the whale on the head. Seemingly liking it the skeleton nuzzled its head against Simon’s palm.

When Simon turned around he saw two stiff-faced boys. He smiled and asked

    “Do you want to fight?”

The students looked back and forth between the deimos and Simon shook their heads in disbelief and dove into the water to escape.

“Hm? I didn’t mean to drive you both away… Sorry!”

Simon took a moment to recharge his air magic circle and sat back down to check the points.

    1st – Elissa: 2500 points (10 coins)

    2nd – Aun: 1540 points (0 coins)

    3rd – Hector: 1100 Points (10 coins)

    4th – Chatelle: 980 Points (10 coins)

The gap in points had already grown quite large while he was relaxing. All these students were the ones who headed to the outer sea.

The second-place student Aun seemed to have given up on coins and went to the outer sea to collect points first.

[Kuhehe!! Are you sure you’ll be alright?? The 1st place is already at 2500 points.]

    ‘It’s fine.’

Simon folded his fingers together like he was calculating something.

‘I guess I’ll catch up in the next 10 minutes.’

    [What??!]

Pier’s dumbfounded voice was almost drowned out by the sea of thoughts running through Simon’s mind.

[Kuhehe! Crazy bastard. What in the world are you up to this time?]
