    Chapter Index

    “Abandoned Newborns? ……”

The Xu system strides forward once more, following the ranks of the starving people at every step.

    He’s very clear.

It is not unusual for babies to be abandoned in these times; after all, how can parents have any spare capacity to care for their babies when they are struggling to survive on their own?

The best thing to do when you meet something like this in times of famine is to pretend that nothing happened.

The Xu system thought this and silently lowered its eyelids.

Intend to turn a deaf ear.

Intend to turn a blind eye.

So did everyone else around them, including Auntie Wang’s family who had given the water earlier.

It wasn’t that they weren’t kind, it wasn’t that they didn’t have a heart of mercy, but trying to raise a newborn in such years of famine meant reducing their own family’s rations and their hope of surviving.

Between the two, the crowd still prefers their own families.

    Splat–

    Splat–

The heavy footsteps sounded like a moral condemnation.

Knocking at the heart of the crowd.

Steeply, Xu System stopped, he looked up at the sun in the air, as if he had finally made a decision, and in the gazes of the others who were surprised and dismayed, he quickly broke away from the ranks of the famers and darted towards the direction where he had just heard the sound.

“Although it’s just a fake simulated world, it’s just too real to be at ease ……”

    “This period of food scarcity.”

“I’m afraid if we leave it alone, what will happen to the boy–“

The Xu system silently increased its speed.

Searching through barren grass and running over choked rocks.

Gradually, the height of those weeds did not exceed Xu’s knees, every step needed to struggle to push aside the tough branches, the hot wind whistling in the ears, with the rustle of the weeds rubbing together.

    Cloak and dagger.

    Courageous.

It’s like what’s depicted in countless fairy tales.

Tiny arms pushed aside the difficulties, tender feet stepped over the obstacles, and the intrepid brave finally reached their destination and found the baby girl wrapped in cloth under a dead tree.

The sunlight descended from the sky and was divided into countless parts by the dead tree branches that had lost their leaves, scattered and dappled with light and shadow.

    The Xu system crouched down.

Picking up the infant, who had obviously not been born long, and sheltering it from the blazing sun.

    “Finally found you,” he whispered.

The baby girl’s skin was white and tender, like the petals of a newly blossomed flower, with a faint pink halo, her eyes blinking, curiously gazing at the overheated, overworked, reddened face of Xu’s department.

The tiny nose opened and closed slightly, and her body curled up in Xu System’s arms, becoming incredibly quiet.

It seemed to feel safe in the arms of Department Xu.

“It doesn’t seem to be much of a problem.”

Seeing the baby girl sleeping soundly, the Xu system breathed a sigh of relief, and then carried the baby girl back towards the original group with as gentle a movement as possible.

    It’s a little difficult though.

But the Xu family didn’t want to give up the child.

At least, go ahead and try to keep her alive through this famine.

    ……

    [Suffering makes heroes]

[You ignored the amazement of the others, and when everyone chose to give up, you became a hero to one person, and brought back the baby girl in danger, treating her as your own sister.]

[You traded what was left of your food for some breast milk so that your sister wouldn’t have to endure hunger.]

[Correspondingly, you, who have lost your last ration, can only endure the cramps in your abdomen, and feel the powerlessness and weakness of your body every day and night.]

    [Good thing you’re lucky]

[Before you actually starve to death, you and your sister follow a procession of starving people and manage to reach a mortal city, where you receive life-saving hot porridge from a soup kitchen.]

[You survived, survived with your sister]

[You have made many inquiries and learned that the name of the city is Black Stone City, belonging to a mortal dynasty, and that every five years, an immortal will come to test the qualifications and take in a disciple]

[Your luck seems to be running a bit low again, with the last intake just a short time ago, and you have to wait a new five years]

[You decided to stay in Black Rock City and participate in that once every five years apprenticeship meeting, and for that reason, you started to find ways to earn money and try to support yourself and your sister.]

“You named your sister Molly Hsu.

    ……

Time passes and years go by.

Maybe it’s because of the simulator.

Xu System often felt that time flew by, as if when playing a game, he pressed the plot skip button, and the game skipped straight to several years.

    Just.

The Hsu system still retains relevant memories.

Remembering how he survived in Black Rock City, remembering his memories of spending time with his sister, Mo Li, and dealing with his neighbors on the street.

“Counting the time, it’s only a year short of the Apprentice Assembly.”

    Inside the narrow cabin.

There is very little furniture and the floors are bright and clean.

The Xu system mused, scratching a deep mark on the wall with black charcoal; there had been four such deep marks, symbolizing the fourth year.

This year’s Hsu system is nearly eleven years old.

The inner, mature mind of the Traveler makes him seem more reliable than his peers.

    “Brother!!!”

The soft, innocent voice came from the back.

Almost simultaneously, a tiny figure jumped onto Xu System’s back, lying down intimately, revealing a childishly reassuring face.

    “You, you, always so naughty.”

    The Xu system sounded helpless.

Lightly lifting the back of the girl’s neck.

Place it gently on the ground.

“Which is not true, elder brother wronged Mo Li”, after landing on the ground, the girl retorted up in dissatisfaction, as she said so, she tugged and pulled on Xu System’s robes to straighten out the folds formed by her fidgeting earlier.

The expression was serious and the movements were careful, as if they were dealing with something extremely important.

    When it’s all over.

The girl squared up with a look of contentment.

Smiling innocently, agile and lovely, the four year old is like the most flawless porcelain doll, so that Xu Department can not help but glean a hand.

    “No rubbing Mo Li’s head!”

Hearing the girl’s adorable voice of defiance, Department Xu laughed, “Why not?”

The girl fussed with her fingers, counting, “Grandma next door said it, touching a child’s head will make them grow taller, elder brother has already touched it many times, and if it continues like this, what if Mo Li can’t grow taller!”

Department Xu was curious again, “Then what does Little Mo Li plan to do when she grows taller?”

The girl didn’t hesitate, “Help your older brother make lots and lots of money!!!”

“Hahaha, like this? That’s really something to look forward to.”

The Xu system let out a loud laugh.

At the girl’s exasperated expression, she rubbed the dark, beautiful hair again, then flipped her wrist and removed the large, round watermelon before her lovely sister could get angry.

“Wow, it’s a big, big watermelon!”

Xu Moli let out a “wow” gasp.

Eyes full of surprise and happiness.

Hugging Xu System’s thigh, he cheered, “I want to eat, I want to eat, elder brother quickly cut it for Mo Li to eat!”

“Okay, okay, I’m coming,” the boy responded dotingly, and after keeping his sister away from him a bit, he took out the family’s kitchen knife and sliced the watermelon into even multiple portions.
