I Became a Genius Law School Student Episode 65

Professor Choi Seong-cheol whom I had not seen in a long time did not look very bright.

To be precise until he saw me his face was filled with joy as if something happy had happened but as soon as I appeared it became completely distorted and lifeless.

‘No I don’t want to see you either.’

But I couldn’t help it. This is because the Legal Clinic’s activity days have returned.

Of course it is our students’ responsibility to listen to the stories and provide legal advice but since it is called ‘Korea University Law School Legal Clinic Center’ someone had to take responsibility and supervise it.

That was why Professor Choi Seong-cheol was now standing at the front of the classroom with a shit-chewing face.

“…Are you all here? “Let’s get started.”

Professor Choi Seong-cheol said as he looked through the documents he had pulled out.

“This week there were three cases received through the online counseling center. “I will climb the ladder and distribute the responsibilities so please report to the group chat room.”

The last time the matter was resolved it was a case that came straight from a phone consultation without prior application but this time it seemed like the cases submitted online had piled up.

From the perspective of responding to counseling this is actually much better.

In online applications clients are required to write a simple fact sheet and attach it together so they can understand the details of the case in advance and check questions or legal principles to refer to before speaking with the client.

    [Incident 1 ——– Park Yoo-seung and Yoo Tae-un]

    [Incident 2 ——– Shin Seo-jun Jeong Min-sik Lee Ga-eun]

    [Incident 3 ——– Go Tae-kyung Han Yu-hwa Jo Jeong-rim]

    ‘Oh I got caught.’

Legal Clinic is divided into groups of 2 to 3 people.

The process of consulting on a single case takes a lot of work from researching data to writing a client response report.

This means that the problem should be divided among the members of the autonomous group.

There were three cases but there were many more cases than that so there was a high possibility that he would not receive a dividend.

It should have been considered a stroke of luck.

“If you take charge of a lot of things there is still something left.”

Yoo Taewoon also said the same thing and nodded.

“Documents related to each case are also posted in the group chat room so you can look them up on your own. “The client consultation starts at 5 o’clock so you’d better read it quickly.”

Seongcheol Choi pointed to the clock hanging on the classroom wall. The time on the clock shows 4:50. There was less than 10 minutes left.

It was a very tight time but to me who has been trained through legal argument competitions this is not a big deal.

I immediately downloaded the relevant file and opened it.

    [Incident details]

    Client Name: Yoon Soo-ah

I had a cat. On March 7th of this year as my family went on an overseas trip I couldn’t leave my cat alone in an empty house so I left it at a friend’s house.

But when I returned to Korea on March 14th I realized he wasn’t contacting me anymore. When I went to visit him and questioned him he said he was so annoyed by the cat running around and crying every night that he sold it out of the blue.

I hurriedly contacted the person who had purchased the cat but he replied that he had paid a fair price for the cat and that he could not return it because they were already attached. Is there any way to get my cat back? I don’t have the confidence to live without our Somi.

    …(lower)…

    “No something like this happened.”

Taewoon Yoo let out a laugh.

“You took charge of your friend’s cat and sold it out of anger?”

    “I guess so.”

“No matter how angry you are about the cat… if you’re going to do this you shouldn’t have said you’d take it in the first place.”

    I agreed.

It is relatively common to leave your pet with someone you know while away from home on a trip.

There are many difficulties in taking an animal abroad and if the travel period is long it is also uneasy to leave the animal alone in an unattended home.

Even though it is an animal it has the word ‘companion’ in front of it.

It means that they are like family to the person raising them.

As it is a precious family affair it is usually entrusted to someone who is really trustworthy close or someone who really likes animals and is good at taking care of them.

“I don’t know anything else but this client’s eyes are really bad.”

Yoo Taewoon licked his lips bitterly but I thought a little differently.

Of course it’s not a good idea to think about selling a cat just because it was a little noisy.

Not only is it not mine but it is not appropriate to treat living creatures in that way.

    ‘Yeah that doesn’t usually happen.’

You may think that the friend was a strange person and that the client did not know how to see people.

But that may not necessarily be everything.

“In this situation… no. “You can check it when you call in person.”

    “What are you talking about?”

A question mark appeared on Yoo Tae-woon’s expression but I continued reading the file without paying any attention.

‘It’s not a legally complicated case.’

By the time I had sorted out what I needed to say in my mind the clock hand pointed to 5 PM.

At the same time as if it had been waiting the counseling receiver placed in a corner of the classroom began to ring.

“If number 2 is on the phone… it’s incident number 1. Come out and get it.”

Seongcheol Choi checked the documents and guided them.

    “Shall I take it?”

“I think that would be good. “I’m not sure about this one.”

After asking Taewoon Yoo’s consent I picked up the receiver.

“This is Korea University’s Legal Clinic Center. “How can I help you?”

    – My name is Suah Yoon. I submitted an application to the online center but didn’t you read it?

The voice on the other end of the phone belonged to a young woman.

I felt strangely sharp and nervous.

It wasn’t hard to understand that he had become sharper after losing his beloved cat.

“No I read it. So… you said you were in a difficult situation because your friend sold the cat you had entrusted to him.”

    – under.

    Suddenly Yoon Su-ah snorted.

    – Don’t even call me friend you bitch.

    ‘This is how it started.’

Like Oh Ki-tae who was my first client the general public often cannot distinguish between legal counseling and psychological counseling.

We do not hope to narrow down only the legally problematic parts and provide information in a neat form like exam questions.

On the contrary clients tend to pour out all their empty words regarding legal professionals as trash cans for their emotions or objects to complain to.

It’s not that I don’t know that feeling.

I hope someone realizes that this is how unfair and difficult it is for me.

I believe that only by explaining and understanding this suffering in greater depth and detail will I be able to receive proper help.

In reality lawyers and clients are partners who must work together to navigate various legal procedures including trials and agreements.

A lawyer’s job is to go beyond simply reviewing the legal aspects and support the client so that they can endure everything.

That’s why listening to emotionally charged stories is helpful.

At least with regard to the case in question it is a means of fully understanding the client and building a relationship of trust.

Sometimes they spit out meaningful information that they themselves didn’t know about.

‘But it’s true that I’m tired.’

It is especially mentally exhausting to talk to someone who is so angry.

The weight of a person’s heart that is not written on the exam book but must be carried if one wants to live as a lawyer.

Perhaps the true meaning of Legal Clinic’s existence is to experience and prepare for something like this.

    – It’s ridiculous. What a good thing I did.

“What was your relationship with the relative… ‘acquaintance’ who entrusted the cat to you?

    – I’m a high school classmate.

I met Yoon Su-ah and her friend tentative name A because they were in the same class in high school.

To borrow his own words Yoon Soo-ah belonged to a fairly ‘popular’ group at school and he took care of Mr. A who was relatively ordinary and took him around with him here and there.

    – There were a bunch of boys who approached her because they wanted to talk to me. Her first boyfriend was like that too but she probably still doesn’t know.

Yoon Su-ah sneered so coldly that it could clearly be felt even through the receiver.

    ‘This woman was right.’

The more I heard the story the more confident I became.

‘Surely you can’t call something like this a friend.’

Yoon Su-ah’s feelings toward Mr. A were if I had to call it a name closer to an attitude towards ‘lower ones’.

He said that since I who was this proud had given you the grace of maintaining a relationship with you you should devote yourself to me.

In fact Su-ah Yoon had been asking Mr. A to do all kinds of trivial things from his school days until now and Mr. A seemed to have followed suit without saying a word.

It was a relationship reminiscent of a master and maid rather than friends.

Of course Yoon Su-ah herself explained that it was a ‘natural and insignificant’ request but the story originally told verbally was cleverly distorted from the speaker’s perspective.

Considering Yun Su-ah’s neurotic and egocentric attitude it wasn’t that difficult to figure out the truth.

    – Yes just this time. Is it really that difficult to take care of Som for only a week? I didn’t ask for much just fed him well and made sure he drank plenty of water. Also cats can wander around a bit and cry in unfamiliar places.

Of course if you look at it objectively it is not wrong.

However from Mr. A’s perspective it would have been a little different.

The stress that had built up from always being treated as a subordinate servant may have exploded due to this incident.

In any case Mr. A has been used as a convenient tool that you can trust and entrust with your cat.

It would not be entirely wrong to think that the sudden act of such a ridiculous act was an expression of emotions accumulated over a long period of time.

‘Well there’s no one I like.’

The client Yoon Soo-ah has always been using Mr. A while looking down on him in his heart.

Mr. A who may not have had the courage to face it head-on agreed to this but took out his anger with the absurd means of selling innocent animals.

If I had to give an honest opinion I felt sorry for Som the cat.

For some reason I remembered the photo of Somi that Su-ah Yoon had attached at the end of the police report file.

In the photo Somi is a white ragdoll curled up on the table without even looking at the owner who is taking the picture.

    ‘It was cute. however….’

Because his natural fur color was so white there were parts that caught my eye even if I didn’t have to look.

Even though it is a long-haired cat its fur is not brushed properly so there are clumps and lumps here and there or it is not washed well so it is dark and dirty.

The thin body and oddly dull dull fur raised suspicions of malnutrition.

It was easy to guess from his personality but it seems that Yoon Su-ah was not a good owner.

    – I also do YouTube with Somi. I even received a silver button.

To her cotton was just a means to something.

Did not being able to live even a day mean that you couldn’t produce video content?

On the other hand the person who took Somi now seemed like a pretty nice person.

Of course Yoon Su-ah went on a rampage reciting the conversation saying that she pretends to brush wash and take care of the subject who is not the real owner.

Looking at it objectively it just means that the adopted cat is being raised faithfully.

    – So what do you think?

    Suah Yoon asked.

    – Can we get our cotton back?

I covered the receiver and let out a small sigh so as not to be heard by my dear client.
