I Became a Genius Law School Student Episode 46

Jeong Min-sik stood blankly for a moment unable to answer.

A variety of emotions flashed across his face.

His cheeks turned red and he let out a sigh as if he was dumbfounded.

    “He’s so proud.”

Jeong Min-sik who barely managed to keep his wits about him glared at me.

“Do you feel like the world is yours since you were lucky enough to climb up there? Do you feel like you’re the best?”

A quiet voice came out from between the corners of his mouth.

“Yes it is below me. “I don’t think this is a place where a guy who lived like a piece of trash can rise up just because he got some luck.”

    ‘Ah this nostalgic sound.’

Jeong Min-sik’s appearance brought back faded memories.

Actually it hasn’t been that long since I miss it but it already feels like the distant past.

“There was someone who said that before. “To your team.”

    I shrugged my shoulders.

“What happened to that guy in the end?”

    “…!”

When Bae Hyeon-joong challenged me my grade was 139th.

Bae Hyun-joong ranked 37th. If you lined them up in a row the difference was so vast that it couldn’t even be captured on one page.

However at the end of free-ro I proudly achieved a score within five fingers.

“The 139th and 37th places were overturned but do you think the 5th and 3rd places won’t be overturned?”

    “…It won’t turn over.”

Jeong Min-sik answered trying to keep the corners of his mouth from quivering.

“Because the competition for rankings is much fiercer than for the hundred people below me. “This is a battlefield where only ‘real’ people can enter.”

Well is that really the case?

I had no intention of competing by arguing. My method is to show results.

I was about to turn around because I had said everything I wanted to say.

“I am so sorry to hear that.”

Haru came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder.

    “what’s the matter?”

    “It’s coming out.”

    “what?”

    “Midterm exam grades.”

Lee Ha-ru held out a smartphone screen with a grade score chart displayed.

    “…is it real?”

It was today that I complained about why the results were not coming out like this and indeed it seems that the professors at Korea University Law School are not noble people.

“Good. I can prove it right here. “The difference between you and me.”

Jeong Min-sik’s dull voice clings to me.

However I did not miss the fact that the end of his words were trembling slightly as if mixed with anxiety.

    “What do you like?”

    So I nodded.

“Then let’s take a look here. result.”

I was handed Lee Ha-ru’s smartphone.

Law school grades are assessed using a grade system ranging from A to F similar to undergraduate school grades.

Since grades are calculated only after taking the final exam and giving a total score there is no way to find out the overall rank from the midterm exam.

However it is different at Korea University Law School in the world of ‘In the Law School’.

Here in order to encourage competition the rankings for each subject are made public during the midterm exam and the overall midterm ranking table calculated by multiplying this by the percentage of credits is separately announced.

This time too there would have been a poster so large that it would have been difficult to miss in the hallway on the first floor.

Just like the ranking table sent by text message to each student.

First quickly scan the top 10 with your eyes.

10 9 8 7 6 5. My name was not next to any of the numbers.

    “That’s right.”

    Jeong Min-sik spat out.

“Fifth place was just an accidental achievement. “It’s obvious that you have returned to a position that suits your level.”

    “4th place. Jeong Min-sik.”

    “What…!”

As I read it in a mechanical voice Jeong Min-sik came running to me.

His expression was crumpled and a mess.

It seemed like it was hard to believe that he had been pushed aside by someone other than Han Seol and Shin Seo Jun.

“what? “Jung Min-sik came in fourth place?”

“who is this? “Who passed it?”

Before I knew it the students who had gathered were buzzing.

It was also the beginning of the preliminaries for the legal argument competition so there were quite a few people passing by around us.

Everyone’s eyes were on me and Jeong Min-sik.

Jeong Min-sik suddenly snatched the smartphone from my grasp and swallowed.

His fluctuating eyes wandered to the top of the ranking table.

“…tied for second place. Hanseol Shin Seojun.”

    ‘oh.’

I wasn’t able to check properly but it seems like Han Seol was able to catch Shin Seo Jun in the end.

While studying I often argued with myself about the application of law or precedents and I think that helped develop my understanding and application skills.

If so it’s something to be proud of.

Jeong Min-sik who actually read their names out loud stood there like a stone.

It’s as if he doesn’t have the courage to check up there.

    “1st place… 1st place….”

The voice I reluctantly began to speak only stuttered over the same section like a broken cassette tape.

The students who were watching and talking about something eventually got tired of waiting and took their smartphones out of their pockets.

Naturally they were also students at Hankuk University Law School and had received a grade list.

Even if it wasn’t necessarily true by now people who had seen the poster in the first floor hallway were talking about it here and there making it a hot topic.

There were many ways to satisfy curiosity without having to wait for Jeong Min-sik.

Meanwhile the rumbling sound got louder.

    “Ugh it’s frustrating.”

Hanseol who couldn’t help but snatch Lee Haru’s smartphone from his hand again.

    “First place.”

With a bold attitude he reads the name decorated on the top of the shining tower.

“Park Yu-seung. Congratulations you finally did it.”

    * * *

We entered the moot court where the preliminaries were to take place leaving Jeong Min-sik standing tall as if his soul had gone out.

When I heard about it I was told that there was a separate waiting room inside for the contestants who were about to compete.

Our team finally took a breather and talked about various things.

Lee Ha-ru was impressed and asked if he was really first place and Han Seol declared his determination that he would not lose next time.

It was nice to have excellent competitors because it helped me improve my skills.

    ‘1st place 1st place….’

Surprisingly my mood was calm. I worked hard and got good results.

He proved that he was not wrong.

    Just about that much.

    ‘Something was lucky.’

For some reason the test questions for all subjects were written in a style that was just right for me as if someone had designed them.

Although my fortune telling was good I never dreamed that things would turn out so well.

Thanks to finding and preparing good study members my score in Constitution I was high which also played a role.

On the contrary in Criminal Law and Civil Law I where he was confident there was a case where he went up against Han Seol and Shin Seo-jun but in Constitutional Law I he took first place with an overwhelming score that was impossible to compare with other students.

And there was still more work to be done before we could toast past achievements.

Right now I had to conquer the preliminaries of this legal argument competition.

From what I saw earlier Jung Min-sik looked like a completely broken cleaning robot. I wish he would just lose motivation and leave but he wasn’t that type.

Rather the more frustration he experienced the more his fighting spirit burned and his method was to struggle.

It was because of that aspect that I did not think of Jeong Min-sik in the original work as bad.

Although he was not a likable person to say the least he never gave up his determination to stand at the top through his own efforts in ‘fair competition.’

    ‘So he’ll come back soon.’

Indeed that thought was not wrong.

A few minutes later it was game time and I came out to the mock court and found Jeong Min-sik and his teammates standing side by side across from me.

    “….”

Although there were no words Jeong Min-sik’s eyes showed a strange speculative spirit.

    I like it.

After all a person going into battle had to have eyes like that.

“From now on I will guide you through how the game will proceed.”

Jang Yong-hwan who played the role of judge or judge in this preliminary round explained.

He will be the representative who will sit on the judge’s bench but in reality several more professors will observe as judges.

“First each team receives the materials briefly reads them for 10 minutes and then decides whether they want to stand on the prosecution side or the defense side. If the desired positions of both teams are the same it is decided by rock-paper-scissors. If they are not the same each team follows their own wishes. “Questions up to this point.”

“…isn’t the position set by us but decided by us?”

    Han Seol asked.

“okay. “Until last year the organizers decided in advance but I heard that they changed the policy because it was pointed out that deciding in which direction to develop an argument is also part of competency.”

The reason why I say ‘I heard’ is because the rules for not only the preliminaries held at Korea University but also the main and final stages were changed at the same time.

In the end if both teams have the same desired position they will play rock paper scissors but it is important to provide them with an opportunity to make their own decisions and compromise.

“Once the prosecution and defense sides are decided both teams will carefully review the provided materials for 150 minutes prepare a written statement outlining their arguments and submit it. In the process Internet searches and discussions are freely permitted but the contents of the data or opinions cannot be asked to external third parties.”

A supervisor will be dispatched to each team’s location while preparing claims and documents.

Therefore you cannot perform unauthorized actions.

“Writing is not just a script it is also a subject of evaluation in itself. “Please write carefully and submit.”

The next procedure is the same as a trial. There is a full statement from both the prosecution and the defense explaining their respective claims.

If there is evidence or witnesses that need to be confirmed in relation to this procedures will be taken to investigate it.

Finally after both sides make their final statements the judges decide who wins or loses.

“Then I will count down 10 minutes from now. “Let’s get started.”

At the command teaching assistants distributed materials to both teams.

During the second free evaluation everything was provided as computer files but this time except for a few evidence files everything was provided in the form of documents.

    “It’s thick.”

    Han Seol commented.

Because the pile of documents was unusually thick I couldn’t read all of it. To get an overview first open the page labeled First Trial Litigation Records.

    [incident name]

    go. robbery and murder

me. Violation of road traffic laws (drunk driving)

The charge was simple. The defendant in today’s incident seemed to be accused of driving while drunk and committing a robbery while killing a person.

    ‘That’s strange.’

Whether it was robbery and murder or driving without a license the facts were relatively uncomplicated.

The fact that it wasn’t complicated meant that there weren’t many issues worth fighting over.

‘Is it an issue that should be contested over the recognition of facts themselves?’

First I flipped through the pages and continued reading.

As we did so puzzled reactions began to emerge both from our side and from others.

    “…what?”

    “Huh?”

“Why are you giving me all this?”

The reason why the question arose was clear.

This is because as can be seen with just a cursory glance there is enough evidence in this data to prove the guilt of the defendant in this case ‘Kim Gap-dong’.

Confession by the defendant Kim Gap-dong himself.

Another car’s black box with Kim Gap-dong’s car in it.

A weapon covered in Kim Gap-dong’s fingerprints and the victim’s blood.

By all accounts Kim Gap-dong was guilty of all the crimes he was indicted on.

“…If this is the case shouldn’t it be the prosecutor’s side?”

It was just as Hanseol said.

The winner or loser of the criminal section of the Jain Court Argument Competition is strictly determined by whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty.

If the case is guilty it is a win for the prosecutor and if the case is not guilty it is a win for the defendant.

In a situation full of such unfavorable conditions no fool would choose the defendant.

“Didn’t I ask the wrong question? If this happens that side will also choose a prosecutor and in the end it is no different from deciding who wins or loses with rock paper scissors.”

I didn’t answer and was lost in thought.

    ‘This incident. if….’

“Time limit is over. “Each side should state its desired position.”

Meanwhile the 10-minute time limit was up and under Jang Yong-hwan’s instructions we gathered in the center of the mock court.

“I will take the prosecutor’s side.”

Over there Jeong Min-sik spoke as a representative. His tone was full of confidence as if there was nothing more to see.

“What about that one? “Are you a prosecutor too?”

Jang Yong-hwan looked back at us and asked.

“Of course it’s a prosecutor. “Unless you’re crazy would you choose the defendant here?”

Jeong Min-sik sarcastically stood a step away.

I glanced at that figure and whispered softly to my teammates.

    “Guys.”

    “huh?”

    “why.”

    I asked to confirm.

“Can I decide this on my own?”

“…What are you going to do?”

Hanseol asked doubtfully but then nodded. It was agreed upon in advance that this decision would be left to me.

After finishing the discussion I declared to Jang Yong-hwan.

    “We…”
