I Became a Genius Law School Student Episode 35

[Notice regarding restrictions on study room use]

    “What is this?”

As always when I headed to the study room there was a no-entry sign hanging up there.

When I heard that there was a small problem with the drain pipe passing through the ceiling of the study room I was told that use would be prohibited for the time being.

If this is going to be the case why not put up a notice on the website? What is the point of just hanging a signboard at the site?

    “It’s difficult.”

If you were simply studying alone you could just go back to the reading room.

But today things are a little different.

    “What? “Can’t you use Sroom?”

Iharu poked his head out from behind his back.

    “I think so.”

Now I was accompanied by constitutional study members.

I got along better with these people than I thought so we decided to study other subjects together as well.

Studying has always been a good study strategy as it allows us to make up for each other’s shortcomings and also adds compulsory force to our study schedules.

“I guess we’ll have to find another place.”

    Seungpil Kim received the message.

“A place where there are seats for six people to sit around and where it is not a problem to exchange discussions in person.”

“What about the break room? “There’s a big table there.”

    Hanseol suggested.

It was a fairly plausible solution.

It’s originally a place to rest and chat so there’s no problem and there aren’t many people actually using it so there’s less chance of being disturbed.

The rest of the group seemed to think it was a good idea so we packed our bags and headed to the break room.

    The problem occurred there.

    “What are these bags?”

On the table there were a lot of bags tumblers books etc. that someone had piled up.

Judging by the fact that the commercial law textbook and criminal procedure law textbook stood out it was clear that it was a second-year student’s work.

It is difficult to use it as is.

However I didn’t really feel like messing with my senior’s things.

As an awkward atmosphere prevailed a rumor emerged.

    “It’s against the rules.”

She walked over to the table without hesitation and threw the items away in a corner of the lounge.

“Leaving personal items in the lounge or making certain places private is prohibited by student regulations. “If you have any complaints go to the student council and complain.”

“…Are you going to be okay?”

It was a refreshing move but in the legal field where personal connections and reputation information are more important than anything else there was enough room for an open conflict with a senior to have a disadvantage.

So I had no choice but to ask.

“You want to be a trial researcher. “They say they do a reference check when hiring public officials.”

    Reference check.

This is a system that contacts people around the person to check whether there are any flaws in the person’s character or reputation before being appointed to a public office or selected to join a law firm.

Because of the existence of this reference check in law school even if there was something we didn’t like it was often said that ‘good is good’.

    “Oh don’t worry about that.”

At that time Yu Ye-seul intervened.

“I know this senior because I saw his bag design. I heard that there was an intern at Taejong this year… Referral check? The person who should be worried about that is senior Lee not Han Seol. Hehehe.”

Come to think of it we now have a daughter who is the head of a large law firm Taejong.

Among students wishing to pursue a career in a law firm there were few who did not apply to Taejong.

As Yoo Ye-seul said it wasn’t us who had to worry about reputation.

    ‘It’s reassuring.’

There is no problem if you exercise your legitimate rights according to the rules. This was the taste of power.

It may sound strange but in the legal world which is full of all kinds of wrong practices and a sense of authority you have to be strong to be able to act like an outcast.

Anyway thanks to this we were able to settle down comfortably and proceed with the study as planned.

The method was to solve each question in advance and share the answers with each other to fill in any misconceptions or missed issues.

“I’m stuck here with this problem.”

When Yoo Taewoon handed me my answer sheet I glanced at it and then answered.

“Oh that. I made a mistake regarding the point in time when the retroactive effect of the main registration is applied. “That is not the first registration but the main registration based on the second registration.”

“uh? Oh that’s right! Then the mortgage registration registration is not canceled here….”

It’s not that I didn’t study so even if I pointed out minor errors everyone understood.

“There is a precedent with the same facts.”

“It wasn’t in the basic book?”

“It’s the latest precedent. “It came out last year.”

“Aaaah. “I have to edit it again.”

It wasn’t just about providing help.

For some of the problems I solved by relying on general legal principles there were separate precedents that perfectly matched the facts.

Because it was a somewhat minor or recent precedent it was omitted from the basic book.

Hanseol memorized such cases from somewhere and added them.

‘I’m glad I found out now.’

Points are awarded even if the case is resolved in accordance with legal principles.

However the purpose of the questions that were explicitly based on precedents was in the end no different from ‘Are you familiar with these precedents?’

Therefore if there was a precedent it was naturally advantageous to write it down.

“Rather from my perspective it’s more surprising that an answer comes out even without knowing the precedent. “How can that be?”

“That’s right Director Kang Chang-soo’s blood flows through Mr. Park Yoo-seung! With a natural legal mind…!”

    “You should be quiet.”

    “yes! sorry!”

It was almost time for Yoo Ye-seul to worship Park Yoo-seung again.

At first she tried to slander me because of my blood relationship with the director but now she tried to praise me by citing my bloodline whenever she did anything.

‘I’m glad I at least heard what you said.’

As I was about to sigh Yoo Taewoon made a groaning sound while holding a pile of answer sheets.

“Oh by the way this isn’t really easy.”

    “what?”

When I asked him a question he waved the answer sheet.

“I’m talking about Civil Law III past papers. Since model answers are not made public you have to solve them all one by one and then try to match them. “Even so I’m not sure if it’s a 100% perfect answer.”

    “iced coffee.”

Civil Law III Professor Jeon Gyu-wan who teaches property law does not collect the exam papers you submitted.

Therefore all the past questions were made public but the problem was that there was no data compiling model answers.

It is easy to study if model answers are made public.

It is very helpful in determining direction by being able to understand not only the conclusion and key issues but also which points the professor is giving or deducting points from.

On the other hand if the correct answer is not revealed you must prepare for the test as if you were starting from scratch.

We look through the basic book and lecture notes to see if there are any missing issues and check each other’s notes to find out the parts that the professor emphasized.

That is what we are doing now.

“It certainly takes a long time but civil law is still worth the time investment. “The more you put effort into it the more it will be remembered and embodied.”

    “That is true….”

Yoo Taewoon lowered his head as if he agreed.

From the beginning his strength was the honesty of never giving up even if he cried out loud.

Perhaps because he had written so many answers his fingers had calluses that you couldn’t even see.

That was an attitude worthy of applause but in fact it didn’t mean I wasn’t dissatisfied.

If I were to categorize Professor Jeon Gyu-wan he was a professor with a scholarly style similar to that of the Constitutional Court.

Although I tend to choose issues that are more ‘suitable for the exam’ than the Constitutional Court I have my own unique style in creating and grading questions.

As such there was no guarantee that the answer we came up with would match Jeon Kyu-wan’s 100-point explanation.

“It is true that the process of effort is worthwhile but… I wish there was a model answer.”

Hanseol suddenly intervened as if representing my thoughts.

I naturally accepted this and explained it.

“Actually it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist at all.”

    “uh? really?”

“okay. Have you ever heard of the Real Property Law Society?”

At Korea University Law School there were various academic societies formed by students.

The Financial Law Society and the Criminal Law Society were relatively famous and among them was the Real Rights Law Society led by Professor Jeon Gyu-wan.

“The Real Rights Law Society has all the data related to the exam Jeon Gyu-wan took.”

This is because Jeon Gyu-wan handed over his entire database to me to use as a research topic.

Although it was an issue that could have raised issues of equity it did not cause much controversy because Gyu-Wan Jeon was in charge of the first-year course and the Real Rights Law Society only accepted second- and third-year students as members.

“Then wouldn’t it be okay to go to the Real Property Law Society and negotiate? “We have two people with wide feet.”

Yoo Taewoon pointed to Hanseol and Yoo Yeseul.

    “no.”

But things didn’t always work out that easily.

“The Real Rights Law Society was closed for the last time the year before last.”

The cause was the infectious disease that swept the country and the non-face-to-face era.

At that time even the law school conducted all academic programs non-face-to-face and as a result many of the student organizations that required face-to-face activities such as academic societies and clubs were cut off.

The Real Rights Law Society was one of those cases.

Therefore none of the current students were involved in the Real Rights Law Society.

“Actually if you don’t limit it to current students there is one person…”

The last president of the Real Rights Law Society before its disbandment.

Because she failed the bar exam after graduation she was preparing to take the exam in the law school dormitory study room.

    Anyway I stayed in school.

“It’s not an option I’d really recommend.”

    The reason is simple.

Actually I have already met her in person.

    – Hello senior. My name is Park Yoo-seung and I am a first-year student who entered school this year. Actually….

    – go away.

    – yes?

    – I told you to go away. I’m not trying to ridicule you for failing the bar exam but why do you come and harass someone who is quietly studying?

The shock of failing to pass the exam turned the president into a very closed-minded and paranoid person.

The experience of going from being an elite person expected by everyone to being treated as an outcast in an instant seemed to have deeply hurt him.

The president kicked me out without even giving me a chance to explain properly.

    – First grade? Oh my god my younger brother is in the same class as these guys. I need to make sure to warn Heejin so that she doesn’t end up in harm’s way.

The only thing we learned was that the president of the institute had a younger brother who entered school at the same time as us and that even though he was twisted he still cared for his younger brother quite a bit.

But there was nothing that could be done with just that.

First of all it was best to come up with a solid answer.

We concentrated on the work again and managed to finish it after a few hours.

    It was that moment.

    “uh? “It’s gone.”

Among the students gathered a little distance away a female student wearing glasses muttered that.

The name was vague but the face looked familiar.

Where on earth did you see this?

The male student standing next to her asked her.

    “It’s gone?”

“The Civil Law I textbook and written notes are gone.”

“Didn’t you leave it where you left it?”

“no. “I always keep it in my bag.”

The girl wearing glasses was crying but that was just the beginning.

    “Oh you too?”

“I also lost my notebook that summarized the concepts of Criminal Law I.”

    “I have a civil law I lecture plan….”

    “Actually me too….”

Testimonies of lost textbooks and notebook materials arose from all directions.

One or two people could have dismissed it as a coincidence but when it got to this point there was an idea that couldn’t help but arise.

“Isn’t it stolen by any chance?”

I was wondering if someone was deliberately stealing the books of my classmates.

    And that was correct.

    ‘Well it’s already time.’

In the original it was an incident that took place just before the midterm exams.

An episode in which the books and materials of classmates known to be good at studying are serially stolen and Shin Seo-jun uncovers the culprit.

Although it was an episode full of malicious comments people who had learned enough to steal and hide other people’s books were so foolish.

Surprisingly the author responded that it was unfair saying that it was based on something that actually happened.

    ‘Is it worth it?’

I don’t know because I didn’t go there in my past life but I heard that competition in law school has a way of turning even ordinary people into monsters.

It is a system where your lifelong career path can be determined based on your grades.

Since we had already gathered together people who were said to be great at studying it was natural for every single one of them to work hard and compete.

However even if everyone works hard the rankings are inevitably divided from 1st to 150th.

Even students who have lived their entire lives at the top and have never experienced a single failure or defeat will find themselves in a position they never imagined in law school.

What if students with immature minds are thrown into such a harsh environment?

It was a law that one of them could shake and break down and commit the wrong action.

‘Well that has nothing to do with me.’

In the original work the role of solving this case is naturally given to Shin Seo-jun.

Although he could not find the culprit directly he put pressure on the culprit by installing fake CCTV and posting notices saying “I know you are the culprit and I will turn a blind eye if you return all the books and materials by today.”

Originally CCTV was not installed in the reading room building at Hankuk University Law School possibly due to privacy concerns.

The criminal must have noticed this and committed the crime believing he would never be caught so it was intended to shake that confidence.

As a result although it took some time the criminal was able to return all the stolen items to their original owners.

After all the majority of law school students have never done anything deviant in their lives.

This would mean that if something was done impulsively while in a weak state it could be undone.

Anyway because it was such a development I as a reader of the original did not know who the culprit was.

Actually there was a way to find out but even if I left it alone there was no reason to interfere with Shin Seo-jun’s problem.

“Oh what should I do? “There’s not much left until the midterm exams wow!”

That’s why I didn’t pay much attention when the female student started shaking and then burst into tears.

No I didn’t want to leave it there.

    ‘uh?’

The female student took off her glasses to wipe away her tears.

    ‘for a moment.’

Then the bare face that was finally revealed looked exactly like someone I had recently met.

‘…that person looks exactly like the president of the Real Property Law Society.’
