    New Junction (2)

    District 21.

The 20th District is a district that has existed since the early days of Balkan and served as an outskirt district before the city expanded.

As the city expanded and various businesses and people entered most of the districts were redeveloped but in District 21 there were still streets that had not been redeveloped.

This is because District 21 has been a bustling area with many people for decades so it is difficult to easily replace it because various facilities and historical sites are concentrated there.

Therefore within the megacity District 21 was famous for having outdated facilities compared to those closer to the central district.

    Sigh…!!

A wooden plank that you inadvertently step on breaks while making a terrifying sound.

Wet smoke flowed out between the pipes hanging on the wall of the old brick building and spread like soot.

At first glance the appearance of the street is so old that there is no sense of discomfort even if you think it is a dark alley in the outskirts.

The blurry appearance of high-rise buildings surrounding District 21 is the only thing that makes you realize that this is closer to the central district.

Lennok walked slowly through District 21 looking around those streets. He found a sign pointing to a cathedral nearby and walked straight ahead.

A small cathedral located in a remote alley.

There are not many people coming and going and smoke is rising everywhere and the remnants of reinforced concrete from collapsed buildings are piled up here and there giving off a strong smell.

Lennok looked up at the sight of the cathedral and slowly opened the door.

    Jump up!!

    “what?”

Just before pulling the door open the old cathedral door swung open and someone walked out from inside.

A middle-aged man with dark skin. His face is rough as if he hasn’t shaved in days and his eyes are bloodshot as if he hasn’t slept in days.

The body is full of the smell of cigarettes.

“Do people even come to a cathedral like this to pray?”

    “….”

“Walking around wearing a fucking mask.”

A man who mumbled in a drunken voice jerked Lennok’s shoulder and left the cathedral.

Although at first glance he appears to be a drunkard his behavior is not strange.

But Lennok’s eyes shined sharply as he looked at the man’s back.

After wandering around District 21 a few times I confirmed that other people didn’t find Lennok’s mask strange.

There was no doubt that the man who naturally recognized the mask was not an ordinary person.

A center of gravity that never wavers even though it stumbles. The faint scent of blood was hidden by the strong smell of alcohol and the mane of hair that was heavily stained on the inside of the coat.

Lastly he even slightly closes his sleeves as if to hide his identity.

In an instant I was able to infer his level and origin through his facial expression and gait.

‘The smell of life and blood. Magical flow and strange body odor. It’s a sub-race. ‘He’s from outside the city.’

The fact that a person like this frequents a remote cathedral in District 21 must be proof that Lennok did not come to the wrong destination.

With that in mind Lennok reopened the door he had been holding and entered the cathedral.

    Wooooow…!!

The magnificent organ sound you hear as soon as you step into the cathedral.

At the end of the chapel where there are no people at all you can see the back of someone who is concentrating on playing the organ.

Judging by the fact that she is wearing a nun’s uniform she is probably a nun who manages this cathedral.

Instead of speaking directly to the other person Lennok began to quietly look around the chapel.

This is because the building itself the cathedral was a religious facility that was difficult to find in a large city.

The stronger the influence of the Guido denomination the stronger the atmosphere in cities that rejects and distances themselves from religion.

Meanwhile the sight of the cathedral which was still in existence could not help but feel somewhat unfamiliar to Lennok.

‘Maybe it was intentional that it took the form of a cathedral…’

While Lennok was thinking this he was thinking various thoughts about the relationship between religion and the Return to Demonic Demon Church.

After finishing playing the organ the nun quietly stood up and turned around.

    “A new believer has arrived.”

The nun who walked down lightly and stood in front of Lenno held out her right hand without hesitation.

“Nice to meet you Shindo. “His name is Hyrea Odinsen.”

“…I’m not a believer but it’s nice to meet you.”

Lennok took her hand and shook it then looked up at her face and paused.

This was because under Hilea’s short-cut hair a thick eye patch covered her eyes.

“As you can see I can’t see well so I can’t see the believer’s face properly. “These days I can’t hear the voices of believers as if I’m hard of hearing.”

“No I don’t think the voice is your problem.”

Due to the effect of the mask Lennok’s voice is also being altered.

    Hilea sighed in relief.

“Is that so? Thank goodness. Blind people like me rely relatively more on other senses so it would be a big deal if I became deaf.”

“Are you worried that you might be hard of hearing since you were playing the organ just a moment ago?”

“When I play the organ I don’t really listen to make sure I’m in tune.”

    Hilea smiled and answered.

“Because while I’m playing a hymn I’m completely immersed in the process. Should all distracting thoughts get involved in the process of praising God?”

    “….”

God. It’s been quite a while since anyone said something like that in front of Lennok.

Lennok asked even though he knew it wasn’t the business he had come to see in the first place.

“Do you believe that God exists?”

“Is that what you say in church?”

Hilea responded with a slightly trembling expression.

Lennok also felt that the question was wrong and cleared his throat.

“No that’s not what I’m saying… I wonder if you ever imagined what God would look like.”

    “….”

“The most powerful religious group on this continent does not have the slightest doubt about the image and location of God. Rather isn’t it possible to create a specific form and serve it?”

Regardless of the fact that the Guido Church regards the monsters of the open sea as gods and worships them it is an undeniable fact that there are believers who respond to that belief.

Lennok wondered what this non-denominational nun thought about God.

If this person is truly a member of Pandemonium wouldn’t it be because he or she at least views the world in a different way than others?

“Because he has no appearance we can fear him.”

Hilea faced Lennok for a moment with an expression of interest before opening his mouth.

“It can exist as a form of faith because it can provide its own answer to all those who believe in and serve Him. If you can understand that you too will be able to serve with grace under our doctrine.”

An answer that is closer to the basics rather than revealing firm beliefs or individuality.

Hilea also naturally turned away as if he had no desire to engage in a theological discussion.

“So may I know what brought you to this church? If we are talking about the offering you paid I think I should tell you that you have already returned to God’s side.”

    “….”

HiLea immediately notifies you that refunds will not be possible even though you haven’t even taken out the business yet.

It was not difficult to understand what the purpose of most visitors to this cathedral was.

It was absolutely absurd but Lennok decided to take her lightly for now.

“well. I don’t know either. “I came because I heard that I would be able to find out once I came here.”

“I’m sorry but I can’t really guess much from those words. “All I do is sit here all day and play hymns…”

Hilea sighed with an embarrassed expression.

“Normally it is difficult to tell which believers have visited our cathedral.”

“I see. “Just as I was entering the cathedral a man came out. If he hadn’t known I don’t know if he would have stolen something.”

“Is there anything worth taking from this old cathedral? “It’s okay because I don’t have any valuable items other than the organ I’m fiddling with.”

    “okay?”

Lennok adjusted his mask and slowly tilted his head.

“I couldn’t hear the organ when I just opened the door.”

    “….”

“I’m sure you must have talked to him but you pretend not to know. Lying is not a virtue for a priest.”

    There was silence.

Hilea’s expression looks up at Lennok with a grin as if time has stopped.

Lennok looked down at the figure smiled and took a step back.

“Let’s stop here. “I came because of Pandemonium.”

    “Haaa….”

The moment I said that name Hilea’s expression relaxed and she let out a deep sigh.

She sat down on a wooden chair near the chapel crossed her legs leaned back and muttered loudly.

“I was worried because I thought another annoying believer had come.”

    “….”

“If you came here through an arrangement can’t you tell me clearly and quickly? “Why don’t you look at the unnecessary things?”

“What do you believe in there?”

Lennok grinned and casually sat down on the table across from her.

“Not many people really know about Bokmajeon. “Of course I thought they would tell me first but since they are imitating priests I have no choice but to reveal their true feelings.”

“I’m just taking on the job and arranging for the right people.”

Hilea spoke in a sharp voice.

“I happen to take charge of Pandemonium’s affairs and pass it on to them but I don’t have much of a relationship with them in the first place…”

    “You’re lying.”

Lennok cut off the conversation as he reached into his arms and fiddled with the tobacco.

Since I’m wearing a mask I can’t smoke even if I want to. For the time being it seemed like I would have to replace it with medicine in the form of ampoules or potions.

“There is no way Myung could have made such a comment to the relevant person. “He must have a strong enough trait to communicate across the entire continent or he must be close enough to know the leader.”

    “….”

“I would have said that I heard the story separately. “How long do you plan on just sitting around needlessly?”

How long did it take Myung to persuade Lennok and how long did he go through much deliberation to get to this point?

Since Lennok recognizes this better than anyone else he cannot help but be annoyed by the current lukewarm attitude.

At the same time that Lennok expressed his discomfort the very air of the old cathedral began to slowly shake and rumble.

    Doo doo doo!!

Even though only a small amount of magic power has been raised the air in the area vibrates as if it is being crushed just by the projection of that will.

The moment when Hilea stood up from her seat with her lips trembling due to the unusual force.

    “Let’s stop there.”

A completely different calm voice escaped from Hilea’s lips.

“What this child said is not a lie. “They are only vaguely aware of their position.”

    “what?”

“So won’t you take away that energy quickly? “This child’s body is not very strong and it would be difficult to withstand being exposed to such ferocious magic for a long time.”

It was only then that Lennok realized that Hilea in front of him had changed into a completely different person and withdrew his magic.

She smiled contentedly in the suddenly quiet air of the cathedral.

“It’s perfect use of magic power. From divergence to convergence it is flawless. “It’s so worthy of praise that it makes people drool.”

“…dual personality? Nope. “He’s a completely different person.”

Lennok who instantly sensed Hilea’s vital reaction narrowed his eyes behind the mask.

“It looks like they went to great lengths to hide this place. Did you seduce an innocent priest and use him as a shield?”

“I hope you don’t take it so crookedly.”

Hilea slowly raised both hands and took off her blindfold opening her closed eyes at the same time.

Pupils appeared albeit blurry above the eyes which showed nothing but pure white and faced Lennok clearly.

“We’re just filling each other’s needs. “In the process both I and this child take risks.”

    “….”

“I know you have a cautious personality but I hope you don’t think of us as just vicious criminals. Actually if you hadn’t done that you wouldn’t have come to see me now right?”

Hilea who was leisurely leaning on a chair and touching her eyes smiled.

“It seems that the man who has been wandering around the continent has finally found a new comrade. Then shall we talk about the business you came for?”

    * * *

    “…Aris are you listening?”

She lifted her head slightly when she heard a quiet voice coming from overhead.

Her messy blonde hair spread over the book shining in the sunlight.

Clarice snorted at the sight of her casually getting up and starting to fix her hair.

“He really is. After going to the Balkans your shamelessness only increased. Are you planning on pretending you’re not asleep at all?”

    “…Hmm.”

Aris cleared her throat with an embarrassed look and looked away.

“What’s going on Master? “I’m sorry but if it’s about the academic society it’s already enough-”

“News from outside the Magic Tower. “You asked me to deliver it to you every quarter.”

Clarisse said that and put down the catalog she was holding in her hand on her desk.

She was careful about placing anything in her study which was piled high with all kinds of grimoires and old research papers.

“It seems like the old guys want you to focus only on the work of the Magic Tower but I don’t think it can go on like this.”

Clarisse’s brow furrowed as she looked around Aris’s messy laboratory.

“It’s good to delve into curses and medical fields that I haven’t been interested in until now but isn’t it too dangerous to look into ancient primitive magic and shamanic materials?”

    “….”

“Since you have also completed the hierarchy I tried not to interfere as much as possible but I think you need to cool off for a moment.”

    “that….”

Aris couldn’t refute Clarisse’s cold words and kept her mouth shut.

A sabbatical year from my position as a professor at Labatenon University.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve devoted myself to research except for the time I attend conferences representing the Magic Tower.

It is not that there were no achievements in the research so far but on the contrary it is also true that the achievements were not as expected.

It would be a lie if I said I didn’t feel more anxious because Aris herself didn’t have much time.

Her long-time friend and teacher was able to see right through Aris’s heart.

Clarice nodded happily at the sight of Aris starting to flip through the catalog with a slightly sullen look.

“After some rest let’s go out together for the first time in a while. There are already rumors that there are a lot of rime stones on the market these days so I have to go check it out-”

    Sigh!!

Before Clarice finished speaking Aris was staring at one page of the catalog and quickly began turning the pages.

She scanned the entire catalog in an instant and her eyes were fixed on the newspaper clippings at the very front of the page.

Clarisse shrugged her shoulders after checking the contents.

“It’s fun right? “That Madrich Onion died after being defeated by a magician named Lightning.”

    “….”

“Of all the magicians I remember he was by far the best when it came to flirting. Because of that incident we also sent a letter to Torrei but it seems he has no intention of getting involved with the Magic Tower. Rather it seemed like the Thorburn guys came back after being scolded.”

    “….”

“Oh indeed. I’ve also enclosed the letter Bayla sent so please take your time and look through it. It looks like the Guido Church has done something to target the paper you wrote in your lab… Where are you going?”

    “To the city.”

Aris whose complexion was slightly white took her coat and immediately began to pack up her luggage.

Even though it was a huge city with no windy days it seemed like a lot of things had happened while she was away.

And at both the workplaces of the wizards she knew.

“I had to go back and check. “I’ll be back soon.”
