    Chapter Index

    “Shit!”

The sound of anger accompanied by the scent of wine echoed through the empty study, and everything seemed to be back to square one.

The doctor sniffed, his eyes gradually focusing, a subtle frown giving away the ripples in his heart, “The one the old man specially arranged?”

    “Exactly.”

Qi Zhiyu’s low voice responded, and the cigarette held between his fingers flickered a few times under the faint light of the lighter, but he never managed to light it.

This imperceptible agitation seemed to signal an inner unrest.

Eventually, he gave up trying and gently placed the cigarette on the table, “When will she wake up?”

“We need to wait for the high fever to subside, and it’s hard to say whether it will cool down within today, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

The doctor tapped him meaningfully on the shoulder after his words, the force of which seemed to convey a silent comfort and encouragement, “After that, what are your plans?”

The lighter in his hand was spun unconsciously, his dark eyes were deep and unfathomable, as if hiding unknown secrets, “What should be accelerated and resolved can’t be delayed any longer.”

As he was talking, a slight sound of vomiting suddenly came from the hospital room, breaking the brief silence.

Qi Zhiyu immediately turned around at the sound of the voice and crossed into the hospital room with large strides, his eyebrows filled with concern, “What’s going on?”

Only to see Su Wanqing crouching on the side of the bed, weakly dry-heaving uncontrollably into the trash can next to the bed.

“Maybe it’s the bowels feeling sick.”

The nurse beside her carefully patted her back and spoke with concern, “I noticed, she just threw up what appeared to be a couple of pills.”

    Pills?

The doctor sniffed, his brows furrowing slightly, his gaze probing, “Are you clear on what drugs she took?”

Qi Zhiyu tugged on the doctor’s arm and the two of them moved quietly outside the hospital room, “I ordered the lord to prepare them, but those are harmless fake birth control pills.”

    “Vitamin tablets?”

    The doctor inquired tentatively.

Qi Zhiyu acknowledged this with a slight nod.

The doctor’s tone became serious and heavy, “Even vitamins should not be taken arbitrarily, and should be taken in the right amount according to the individual’s constitution. Her body is already tired, these drugs may lead to increased gastrointestinal burden.”

Qi Zhiyu sniffed and subconsciously tightened his grip on the hand hanging at his side, his palm vaguely glistening with sweat, “Will her current health condition affect our planned preparation for pregnancy?”

The doctor’s expression also became grave, “Are you sure you want her to take on the burden of carrying a new life while everything is still unsettled?”

“You’re all young, there’s no need to be in such a hurry to conceive the next generation.”

The doctor paused and added, “Besides, the old man is still in good health, so there is no harm in holding a great-grandson even if it’s later in the year.”

    “Not for Grandpa ……”

Qi Zhi Iu’s words reached his lips, but he hesitated and stopped.

He turned around, his gaze pierced through the glass window and landed on the fragile figure on the bed, a touch of unspeakable tenderness flashed in his eyes, “I’m just afraid that, once again, I’ll miss out on that happiness that should have been mine.”

    “Missed again?”

“Is she …… the same child from Mount Yi Ping back then?”

The doctor seemed to realize this with a flash of surprise in his eyes.

    “Yes, that’s her.”

Qi Zhi Iu’s voice trembled slightly, harboring uncontrollable emotion, “Uncle, I can’t lose her a second time.”

The doctor’s eyes welled up with a complexity that contained both understanding and a hint of concern, “If you’re sure you can protect her, go with your heart.”
