    Episode 72

    “Grandfather.”

Zeke held Rufus’ remaining hand tightly.

    Then Rufus hugged Zeke.

“I finally get to hug you.”

Rufus who had suppressed his emotions and was unable to hug Zeke properly when he first saw him was afraid that the curse might harm him.

The other elders of Agamemnon who were behind also came and hugged Zeke with him in the middle.

They were all so big that Zeke was soon buried among them.

But everyone was looking at Zeke with affection in their eyes so Zeke didn’t feel the slightest bit uncomfortable.

Rufus said just as he finished hugging Zeke.

“This is not the time. Let’s hurry and go to the castle. We should treat our family’s benefactor properly.”

Then another elder standing nearby shouted in joy.

“Now that’s an end to that horrible herb soup!”

“Fuck I had to eat that shit for 50 years because of that damn curse.”

Felix who was behind sighed in relief when he heard those words.

‘I’m not the only one who finds that soup weird.’

So Zeke and Felix headed to the castle with the elders of the Agamemnon family.

The atmosphere of the castle had completely changed.

The narrow old castle had wide corridors and was decorated with antique decorations.

Felix opened his mouth wide when he saw the castle.

“Oh no. Master. How can you become famous in just one night…”

I never thought I would actually see the legendary situation where the curse was lifted and the castle regained its original appearance and became a beautiful castle.

Unlike Felix who was admiring the castle as he looked around Zeke recalled the message window that had appeared earlier.

‘I clearly said I would disable emergency defense mode.’

It seemed possible to use various functions by linking with the system such as the Dragon Slayer’s Rest or Caesar’s Rest.

Zeke believed that the power of the system he possessed was related to the artifact of the elder dragon he had discovered before he died in his previous life.

‘Could Cain’s Hersion or this mask also have something to do with the Elder Dragon?’

Zig lost in his thoughts arrived at the place where he had eaten soup yesterday.

Like the rest of the castle the restaurant had a completely different atmosphere than yesterday.

Beautiful stained glass lined the walls on all sides and bright sunlight streamed in through the windows giving the entire restaurant a refreshing feel.

As Zeke and Felix took their seats the maids brought food.

“Master Zik with black eyes! For the savior of our family we have shown our skills after 50 years.”

A lady of fine features not a stooped old woman wearing a neat maid’s outfit spoke in an elegant voice.

    Felix was surprised again.

“Oh is that the person from yesterday?”

    “Eek! Eek! Of course.”

The head maid speaking playfully began to bring out the food.

Although his body was destroyed by the erosion of magic the power of the great purification unleashed by Zeke purified the magic and restored his body thus restoring his original form.

This time the table was filled with refined and elegant aristocratic dishes rather than thick soups.

Rufus said looking at the food.

“Because we were cursed we couldn’t see the sunlight or eat proper food. As a result our illness worsened our tongues became stiff and our voices became unstable.”

The elders nodded in agreement with that statement.

They were able to eat warm food for the first time in 50 years.

Zeke followed etiquette and stayed silent concentrating on his meal.

The elders also enjoyed the food prepared with care by the head maid.

After the meal was over they decided to move to the garden and have some tea.

Zeke sitting across from Rufus took out a golden mask from his bosom.

Rufus’ face lit up with emotion as he saw the mask.

“The Golden Mask of Agamemnon. The symbol of the family is back.”

    Zeke asked Rufus.

“Your Majesty may I ask you to explain what happened?”

    Rufus nodded.

“Yes Zeke you deserve to hear all the secrets of our family.”

He said stroking the golden mask.

“Fifty years ago a great plague broke out in Mycenae.”

“This is the first time I’ve heard that there was an epidemic 50 years ago.”

    Rufus nodded.

“That would be so. Our family used every means and method to prevent the plague from spreading beyond Mycenae. At that time I was just a young boy who had just come of age.”

Rufus stared into space recalling past events.

    And then he continued.

“The elders of the clan tried to thoroughly quarantine those who had the plague by gathering them separately and bringing those who did not into the castle. However the rate at which the plague spread was too fast to be stopped.”

“Do you remember what kind of illness it was?”

    Rufus nodded.

“It was a terrible disease. If you got it you would have a high fever red spots would appear on your face and most people would vomit blood and die within three days.”

Zeke was shocked when he heard Rufus’ words.

‘Could this plague be safflower disease?’

Although the time to death was different the symptoms were very similar to those of the safflower disease that was spreading in the border areas of Alencia.

In the previous life this plague spread and the countries of the Central Continent had to pay a great price.

Fortunately a cure was developed and the disease could have been stopped before it spread further but if not it could have been disastrous.

    Rufus continued speaking slowly.

“But the problem wasn’t the plague. It was when the sun went down that something terrible happened.”

    “What do you mean?”

    Rufus’s hands shook slightly.

“At night those who died of the plague rose and began to attack the living.”

Zeke’s expression hardened as he heard the unbelievable story.

“Are you saying you’ve become a zombie?”

“It was different from the zombies that the warlocks use. When the dead one rose and bit the living the dead one rose and attacked the living too.”

    “It’s contagious. Like a plague.”

“Yes. We can only explain it by saying that a curse had fallen on Mycenae. During the day people died of disease and at night the dead rose and attacked the living.”

It was truly horrifying to imagine the sight Rufus had described.

    “So what happened?”

“After completely blocking the city of Mycenae from the outside world and fortifying the castle they waited for the plague to pass along with the living. But this only increased the number of dead.”

    Rufus’ voice trembled thinly.

And he said touching the golden mask.

“Zeke this mask is a sacred item that has been passed down in our family for a long time. It is from Agamemnon’s ancestors’ ancestors’ ancestors. It is from our oldest ancestors.”

“Do you know who made this mask?”

    Rufus shook his head.

“It hasn’t been handed down until then. Most of the records from before the Golden Age have been lost.”

Zeke felt disappointed when he heard Rufus’ answer.

This was because there was an expectation that it might be possible to obtain a clue about Orichalcum Hersion.

    Rufus continued the story.

“This castle and the golden mask have been symbols of the Agamemnon family for generations. Perhaps because it is imbued with divine power even the dead cannot enter this place. However there is a limit to how long one can endure within the castle. In the end my aunt who was the head of the household at the time made the decision.”

    “What kind of decision?”

    Rufus swallowed and answered.

“The idea was to immerse the dead in a sacred lake to purify the evil spirits. The head of the household and the elders of the family volunteered to be bait.”

“The picture you showed me earlier was about that.”

“Yes. Thanks to the sacrifice of the lord and the elders we were able to successfully lure the dead into the lake and drown them. However a problem arose.”

Zeke had a hunch about something.

“The unclean air of the dead has stained even the sacred lake.”

    Rufus nodded.

“You are right. The sacred lake has turned into a swamp and even the lake’s guardian deity has been transformed into a monster by an evil power.”

Zeke was able to figure out why Nahuel who was a spirit had turned into a demon.

Rufus said with tears in his eyes.

“So the Lord of the Household took the golden mask containing the divine power and jumped into the lake of impurity himself to purify the impure power no matter how long it took.”

Zig thought of the golden mask that was glowing as it sank to the bottom of the lake.

‘You used the Golden Mask’s purification skill. To purify the magic.’

Even after his death Agamemnon’s father continued to activate the power of the waters for 50 years continually purifying the lake’s magical energy.

However the power of the magic was so strong that it overtook the speed of purification and eroded the surrounding territory.

If Zeke had not come the Agamemnon family might have been completely consumed by the Magi and turned into a land of death where no one could live.

    Zeke said looking at Rufus.

“So the purpose of spreading the rumor of the curse was to protect the citizens.”

    Rufus nodded.

“Yes. I came up with my own countermeasures in case there were any remnants of the plague.”

“The curse of a child dying may also have been the result of an evil power.”

“I guess that’s true. Even our trained bodies could not have withstood the force that would break them down so the weak children would not have been able to withstand it.”

It was the moment when the true nature of the curse placed on the Agamemnon family was revealed.

The Agamemnon family deserved to be respected for their noble sacrifices which were made for the sake of the people of the land and countless people on the continent despite the stigma of the curse.

Zeke was relieved to know that his maternal home was like this.

He bowed his head towards Rufus with sincerity.

“I pay my respect and tribute to the honorable sacrifice of the House of Agamemnon.”

Rufus and the other elders looked at him with pleased expressions at Zeke’s sincere greeting.

    Rufus said looking at Zeke.

“The more I look at you the more you resemble your mother.”

Zeke looked up and asked Rufus.

“Grandfather I would like to hear about my mother.”

    Then Rufus’ expression hardened.

“Didn’t Arthur tell you about your mother?”

    Zeke nodded.

“I don’t even know my mother’s name. No one at Draker was willing to talk about her.”

At those words Rufus clenched his fists and trembled.

He shouted with a face full of anger.

“That bastard Arthur. You should have stopped Laura from marrying that guy!”

    ‘Laura Agamemnon.’

Zeke learned his mother’s name for the first time.

    He asked Rufus.

“I heard that the Agamemnon family was once a bloodline of the Drakers more powerful than any other family.”

    Then Rufus snorted.

“The Draker bloodline! Ha Zik. Originally the Draker family was an ally of our Agamemnon.”

“Wasn’t it an alliance not a blood oath?”

“During the Holy Empire era the Draker family was a rural knight family that only worked in the western corner of the continent. They were able to advance into the central continent with the legend of the Dragon Slayer and it would have been impossible without the help of the Agamemnon family the ruler of the central continent and a family with traditions that had been passed down since the Holy Empire era.”

    Rufus continued his explanation.

“Midland also originally started as a city federation centered around Mycenae after the fall of the Holy Empire. However while Mycenae was destroyed by a plague the Drakers took advantage of it to swallow up the Mycenae bloodlines and grow in size.”

There was no falsehood or boastfulness in Rufus’ voice.

Zeke who pretended to be a knightly family that only knew swords but knew the political nature of the Draker family better than anyone else felt Rufus’ words were more credible.

‘Those Draker guys still have that.’

    Zeke asked Rufus.

“My mother must have known all about the Draker family’s behavior so why did she marry Arthur Draker and give birth to me?”

    Then Rufus sighed deeply.

“Laura was my daughter but she was a very mysterious child. As children continued to die in our family due to an evil power my now deceased wife and I had given up. But then miraculously Laura was born.”

“It’s amazing. My mother was the only one born and raised unaffected by the evil power.”

    Rufus nodded and said.

    “There’s a reason for that.”

    He said lowering his voice.

“Zeke your mother was a healer class.”
