A Dragonslayer’s Peerless Regression – 69

Episode 69
Doo doo doo doo!
Zeke was leaving Atlas with Felix in a carriage traveling to another city.
Felix sitting across from me spoke in a slightly excited voice.
“This is my first time going to Master Mycenae!”
But Zeke couldn’t seem to get into the tourist mood like Felix.
‘The house of Agamemnon of Mycenae.’
Mycenae was one of the cities in the Midlands supported by the Drakes.
It was not one of the five major cities of the Midlands but it was said that fifty years ago it was larger than Atlas.
Like the oldest kingdom Thebes it was a traditional city with traces of the Golden Age and the Sacred Empire throughout the city.
The House of Agamemnon was an ancient noble family that had ruled Mycenae and its surrounding territories for a very long time.
Some say that he is a descendant of an ancient kingdom that existed at the same time as the Kingdom of Cronus.
The Agamemnon family the rulers of the land and possessors of long-standing traditions and accumulated wealth also held great power within the Drake clan centered around Mycenae.
However a curse has been placed on the family for the past 50 years and children have been dying one after another.
Because of this rumors of a cursed family began to spread and no one wanted to have anything to do with the House of Agamemnon.
With the fall of the House of Agamemnon the fame of Mycenae faded and it became difficult to find the name of the House of Drake.
Zik arrived in Mecenae with many thoughts in his mind.
* * *
“Whoa. Master! Look over there. It’s like we’ve completely entered the era of the Holy Empire.”
Unlike the sophisticated new city of Atlas Mycenae retained the atmosphere of the Sacred Empire era 500 years earlier.
The entire city was made up of buildings built in the Gothic style primarily used by the Holy Empire.
Zik felt a strange and alien feeling at the sight of Mycenae.
‘Come to think of it I’ve never been to Mycenae in my past life either.’
At that time I mainly traveled around strategically important cities so I didn’t necessarily have a reason to visit a city like Mycenae.
Zeke said to Felix.
“Felix let’s find a place to stay first.”

“Understood Master.”
As a full-fledged knight of the Draker family Zeke could have used the family’s facilities throughout Midland but he deliberately chose to reserve a room at an inn within the city.
It was because I wanted to experience the atmosphere of a place called Mycenae for myself.
Felix quickly looked for a nice-looking inn in the city center.
Zeke entered the inn guided by Felix.
It was a scene you would only see in a storybook.
It was almost dinner time so people were crowding into the restaurant drinking beer and the restaurant owner was serving whole roasted pieces of meat to the customers.
After renting a room Zeke and Felix decided to have a quick meal.
The large owner approached Zeke.
“What would you like to have for dinner?”
Zeke and Felix whose identities were kept a secret appeared to be just tourists visiting Mycenae for the first time.
Felix asked his master with his characteristically friendly smile.
“What sells the best at your restaurant?”
The owner spoke in a confident voice.
“If you don’t need a side dish the special soup is the best. It’ll fill you up.”
Zeke and Felix ordered the soup bread and beer he recommended.
The food came out faster than expected and tasted pretty good.
Zeke ate his food and listened to the conversations of the people around him.
For the most part they were ordinary stories of ordinary people.
‘The city itself seems fine.’
If people were leisurely drinking and chatting in bars before the sun had set it meant that the city’s economy and public safety were good.
Zik who had imagined that the city ruled by the cursed family of Agamemnon would be dark and gloomy was surprised by the unexpected sight.
Then one of the men in the group drinking nearby put a piece of grilled meat on a plate and placed it next to Zeke and Felix.
“You seem to be tourists but it would be a shame to leave without trying Mycenae’s specialty grilled short ribs.”
The group of men agreed with those words saying that it was true.
Zig spoke to the man in a friendly voice as if it was a good thing.
“Thank you for your kindness. The people of Mycenae are truly kind.”
Then the man nodded with a proud expression.
“Yes I am a native of Mycenae. There is no place like here.”
Another man intervened.
“That’s right! I went to Atlas but there were so many people there and it was so crazy that I couldn’t stay. The buildings were all white and densely packed together so it wasn’t very nice.”
The other men nodded as well.
Zeke ordered Felix to buy more beer.
“Oh my what is this?”
The men felt even better after drinking the free beer that Zeke had ordered for them and they kept bragging about the city of Mycenaea.
Zick who was listening to the content became even more confused.
‘Public security is good welfare policies are good and the city is run very well.’

There are many cities on the continent but few of them are run well enough to satisfy their citizens.
Even in the case of the Southern Continent the drug cartels had taken over the entire city and were running it as they pleased to the point that the very existence of the kingdom was meaningless.
Compared to that Mycenae was almost heavenly.
When the men were a little more tipsy Zig slowly started to open his mouth.
“Just from what you said I can tell how wonderful Mycenae is. But who is the mayor of Mycenae now? I don’t see a separate city hall building during the day.”
Then the men who had been laughing and chatting excitedly suddenly shut their mouths and became quiet.
Zeke felt embarrassed when he spoke in the sudden silence.
The man who had first come to Zeke’s table chugged down his beer and then stood up.
“I guess I took up too much of your time. Have a good time.”
The man returned to his original table and the other men began to talk among themselves without looking at Zeke and his group.
Zeke realized from the men’s sudden reaction that they did not want to bring up the subject of the House of Agamemnon.
‘Do you think that even mentioning a cursed family is a detriment?’
Zeke felt he needed to find out more about this.
After dinner Zeke said to Felix.
“Felix you rest first while I look around a bit more.”
Felix who was quick-witted understood what Zeke meant.
“Okay Master. Take care.”
Zeke left the inn alone and walked around the city then headed towards the Syndicate branch.
In every city there were shadows and syndicates had a place in them.
Zeke went inside to find a branch run by the Syndicate just like he had done with Atlas.
The atmosphere was clearly different from that of the inn’s bar.
A grim-looking man stood in front of Zig and spoke.
“This is not a place for a kid to come in.”
Zeke quietly took out one of the cards he had received from Kay.
This magically crafted card was only available to VIP clients within the Syndicate.
The man who recognized the card bowed in surprise.
“I apologize for not knowing you.”
“I want to meet the branch manager.”
The man immediately guided Zeke inside and began walking along a passage leading underground.
‘If you look at this it’s not much different from the Thieves Guild.’
The Thieves’ Guild probably prepares these secure passageways to store stolen goods.
The Syndicate was also an organization where security was important so in reality it was not much different from the Thieves’ Guild.
Zeke passed several forks in the road and was guided to where the branch manager was.
When he entered a separate room in a high-class bar someone was waiting for him there.
He was a young man wearing a neat suit.
He seemed quite young to be the branch manager but considering that the syndicate had undergone a major reorganization last year it was somewhat understandable.
As soon as the branch manager entered the room he fell to his knees.
“I apologize for my rudeness as I did not know you were here.”
It wasn’t the kind of reaction you’d expect from a typical client.
Zeke asked the branch manager.
“Do you know who I am?”
“I don’t know the details. I just heard that he is a person you should never misbehave with.”
There seemed to be something marked on the card Kay gave me.
Zeke nodded and motioned for the branch manager to sit down.
As the branch manager sat down he offered the tea he had prepared to Zeke.
“I heard you like tea.”
“….”
Zick opened his mouth and took a sip of the tea the branch manager had prepared.
“How long were you in Mycenae?”
“I’ve been here for about 20 years now.”
“It’s been quite a while.”
“I’m a native of this area and started my career in the organization at a young age.”
“Good. Then you must know the situation in Mycenae well.”
“Yes. Contrary to appearances Mycenae was a place where the market for stolen goods was active. Most of the stolen goods that came through unofficial routes were processed in Mycenae…”
“Unfortunately what I’m curious about isn’t the stolen goods.”
The branch manager became slightly sullen at Zeke’s words.
“What is the atmosphere of the city of Mycenaea like?”
“It’s a good place to live. Public safety is good and there are plenty of supplies. The only drawback is that the railroad hasn’t been opened making it inconvenient to travel to other cities.”
It seemed odd when a member of a criminal organization said that it was good because the security was good.
Zeke nodded and asked something else.
“Do you know anything about the masters of Mycenae?”
At that moment the branch manager’s face turned pale.
Zeke looked at that sight and remembered the reactions of the men in the inn.
He brought up the name of the branch manager just to drive a wedge in.
“The house of Agamemnon.”
When Zeke mentioned the family’s name the branch manager visibly shivered.
‘I wonder how the rumor of the curse got around to making you this scared.’
The branch manager tried to suppress his fear and spoke to Zeke.
“Where did you hear that name?”
“I don’t know about that. It seems that in Mycenae it is taboo to even mention the name of that family. Is there a reason for that?”
Suddenly the branch manager made the sign of the cross and began to recite a prayer.
It was a city where the remnants of the Holy Empire remained strong.
He opened his mouth slowly.
“Your Majesty that family is cursed.”
“I know that too. They say it’s a curse that kills children.”
Then the branch manager shook his head vigorously.
“Oh no.”
“No? Then there are other curses.”
The branch manager slowly opened his mouth.
“Whoever goes to the West Castle will die.”
“what?”
It was a story Decker had never heard before.
Zeke asked the branch manager again.
“So what you’re saying is that if you go to the castle of the Agamemnon family everyone will die.”
“That’s right. And if you say that name too often you might die.”
Looking at the branch manager’s trembling lips it didn’t seem like he was lying.
‘It seems like there is something.’
Since superstitions are imbued with the power of magic if many people believe in them curses or something strange can really come true.
“Did you happen to go to that castle and find that there were really dead people there?”
At those words the branch manager made the sign of the cross again and prayed then slowly opened his mouth.
“Yes yes. I heard that everyone who went to the castle during my grandfather’s time was cursed and died. I heard that one of my grandfather’s brothers also died like that.”
“Has that happened recently?”
The branch manager shook his head.
“Mycenaean citizens do not go to the castle in the first place. We blocked all the roads leading there in case any tourists were to go there.”
“hmm.”
Zeke listened to everything the branch manager said and came to his own conclusion.
‘It seems that the house of Agamemnon is not cursed after all.’
His eyes sparkled.
‘It must have been Agamemnon who deliberately spread the rumor of the curse.’
