    Episode 64

    “Welcome Mr. Zig.”

    President Flaubert welcomed Zigg warmly.

The president himself drove the car and dropped it off in front of Zig.

“I heard you like tea but I’m not sure if it’ll suit your taste.”

Zeke wondered how far the news of his love of tea had spread.

While Zeke was thinking that the president smiled and said to Zeke.

“The reason I called you aside is for this mission.”

Zick felt slightly nervous after hearing Flaubert’s words.

As someone who had battlefield experience Zikr actually thought that his actions during this mission would not be evaluated very well.

Since you’re on the battlefield it’s the right thing to do to follow orders from your superiors no matter what happens.

Individual actions that ignored orders from superiors were strictly prohibited as they could cause harm to the entire unit.

Zeke waited to see what Flaubert would say next.

    “That was really great.”

    “yes?”

At the unexpected answer Zeke asked back without realizing it.

Flaubert held his teacup and looked satisfied.

“Professor Andrei took very good notes. The Delphos Inspection Unit even sent us a separate message of thanks and situational information.”

At Flaubert’s words Jacques breathed a sigh of relief.

‘I guess the Drake side’s knights have a wide range of command authority so this much is allowed.’

The North where he had lived in his previous life had such a harsh environment that even a slight mistake could cost him his life.

Therefore military discipline was stricter and the scope of command was also very narrow.

Flaubert looked at Zeke and said.

“It’s a bit of a shame that the Black Yacha died during the transport.”

Zique was slightly stung by Flaubert’s words.

In fact the Black Yacha is not dead.

As planned when he was first subdued he was treated as dead by Syndicate personnel during the transport process and smuggled south.

The plan was to wash them there with new identities and then bring them back to the Central Continent.

Currently only Paynen knows that the Black Yacha is an agent of the Empire’s Intelligence Service.

But since he too was one of Zeke’s people there was no way the secret would leak out.

Since I had originally planned to bring the Black Yaksha I had Paynen hand over to the Inspection Unit only the documents related to corruption excluding those related to the Empire among the documents related to the Black Yaksha in Delphos.

With the human experiment data from the empire discovered in the south the stimulant experiment discovered this time and the Black Yacha as a witness it could have been enough to put pressure on the empire.

When Zeke was thinking about the Black Yaksha Flaubert said:

“Mr. Zeke. Given the many qualities you have demonstrated during this mission the faculty council has proposed a different approach to the test.”

“What is a test from a different direction Mr. President?”

    “It’s a devil hunt.”

Zeke felt slightly skeptical about the president’s words.

I thought it was a bit easy for a special graduation exam in Valhalla.

Although hunting demons was not an easy task Valhalla’s graduation missions were notorious for being difficult so hunting demons as a special test for early graduation felt relatively easy.

    Then the president added:

“This isn’t just a simple hunt this is an unsolved case. And I have to do it alone.”

Only then did Zeke nod his head at those words.

Unlike monsters demons do not have a set species or type.

This makes it difficult to characterize its features or understand its movements through its habits.

While the average demon has a high level of aggression and attacks indiscriminately there were demons that were not like that.

As Director Flaubert just mentioned most of the unsolved cases were the work of highly intelligent masters.

Although there are cases where humans cause problems and then blame them on the devil there is a clear difference between what humans do and what the devil does.

    “Where did this incident occur?”

“It’s towards the Duchy of Troy.”

The Duchy of Troy was a direct territory of the Drakers and was also the home of the Drakers.

But even in such a place if there was a case that had not been solved yet it seemed like it was not an ordinary case.

Flaubert continued to speak to Zique.

“If you pass this exam I’ll exempt you from all other exams required for graduation. In effect you’ll be able to meet the graduation requirements with just this exam.”

In fact one of the things Zeke did in his past life was to investigate and track down unsolved cases committed by these evil spirits.

It was a major for him and he had no reason to turn it down if it meant he could graduate quickly.

“I will stake my honor as a knight and resolve the case as quickly as possible so that the people of the duchy who are trembling in fear can be reassured.”

Flaubert looked pleased with Zeke’s answer.

After earning a lot of points from the principal he returned to the mansion.

    ‘We’re leaving tomorrow.’

After thinking back over the schedule he had received from the principal Zeke quickly packed his bags and planned to leave for the Duchy of Troy.

As he entered the mansion organizing his plans someone was waiting for Zeke.

A thin squinty young man wearing light armor.

    He greeted Zeke.

“Sir Zeke Draker. It is an honor to meet you. My name is Felix and I have been sent to guide you on this mission.”

    Zeke said looking at Felix.

“Don’t you have a last name?”

    “It’s Valencia.”

I slowly thought back to the name Felix Valencia but it was a name I had never heard in my past or present life.

Zeke tilted his head at the energy he felt from him.

Unlike other knights Felix’s aura felt different to Zeke who had much more sensitive senses because he could sense mana while the battle was still open.

‘I feel an ominous energy inside my body but I don’t think it’s true. It’s subtle.’

The fact that such a young knight not of Draker blood had such a high level of energy meant that there was something to it.

‘I guess I’ll have to look into it separately.’

    Zeke asked Felix.

“If you are a guide are you from the Duchy of Troy?”

“Yes. I am a native of that place. I studied swordsmanship since I was young completed the swordsmanship guild course and now work for the Atlas Guard.”

    “I see.”

If you were an Atlas Guard member and from the Duchy of Troy it was clear that you would be of great help in solving the mystery.

The very reason Felix came as an assistant made perfect sense.

    Zeke told him.

“I will be leaving for Troy early tomorrow so see you at the central station.”

    “Understood Sir Zeke.”

    * * *

The next day Zeke and Felix boarded the train bound for the Duchy of Troy.

This time too I was able to use the special room with the authority of a Valhalla student.

Felix spoke to Zeke with the aforementioned expression.

“Wow. I never knew there was a place like this on a train.”

Although his expression and gestures seemed innocent Zeke was not fooled by appearances.

‘There was nothing special caught in the information sent by the syndicate.’

If the information wasn’t caught by the syndicate either it was one of two things.

Either an Atlas guard who has yet to realize his talents or an identity created by an intelligence organization more capable than the Syndicate.

‘It’s more likely to be the second than the first.’

Zeke felt that this mission would be more difficult than the last one since he was with Felix who was currently unknown.

As soon as the train arrived at the Duchy of Troy Zeke and Felix took a carriage straight from the station and headed to the northern part of the Duchy where the incident occurred.

It was close to where the Giant Mountains begin.

Although smaller than Atlas the Duchy of Troy home to the Drakes was safer than any other city.

For an unsolved case to break out in such a place could not but be a blow to Draker’s pride.

Zeke and Felix arrived in the northern part of the duchy and went straight to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff in charge greeted Zeke with a bright smile as soon as he saw him.

“Sir Zeke! I heard in advance that you were coming. Oh my it is truly an honor that a pureblood Awakened One has come to visit us in this remote village!”

In the Trojan Empire the blood of the dragon slayers was as good as that of the gods.

Even among the bloodlines of such dragon slayers the visit of a precious direct pureblood Awakener seemed to revive the ominous atmosphere of the village with his mere appearance.

Zeke realized that this was also what Flaubert was aiming for.

    ‘He’s a tough old man.’

Zeke told the sheriff about the circumstances of the case.

“It started a few weeks ago. At first the livestock started disappearing little by little and now people who went into the mountains are not coming back.”

    Livestock children women adults men.

As time passed he was targeting bigger prey.

“I would like to see the crime scene.”

The sheriff nodded and took his horse leading Zeke and Felix towards the farm where they had first been attacked.

The farm was currently in the process of relocating the surviving livestock and controlling access.

Zeke skillfully scanned the area around the farm.

Then I found bloodstains on the fence leading to the mountain.

Zeke looked around with his eyes wide open.

There was a trace of something in his eyes that had become more refined.

    ‘footprint?’

There were traces of footprints larger than human footprints left on the ground.

Zeke bent down and examined the marks left on the floor closely.

He tried to find out the identity of the demon through memories of his past life.

‘The footprints are deep. They seem to be quite heavy. They didn’t break through the fence they climbed over it. The blood is from the animals that were carrying it over leaving a trail.’

Zeke followed the trace of the footprints and imagined it.

He sneaked over the fence of the farm broke the sheep’s neck put it on his shoulder and then climbed over the fence again and went back into the mountain.

    Zeke tilted his head.

‘This isn’t a typical demonic pattern.’

No matter how intelligent a creature is the one Zeke knows would not move so stealthily and it would not even bother to jump over a fence.

Just then the sheriff approached Zeke.

    “Did you find something?”

    Zick said getting up.

“Is it connected to the mountain all the way up there?”

    He nodded.

“Yes that’s right. If you climb up the mountain over there the terrain is quite rough. Sometimes wild monsters appear so even the villagers don’t go up there.”

Zeke nodded and spoke to Felix who was standing next to him.

“Let Felix go. I need to look up.”

    Then Felix hesitated and said

“Sir Zeke. Would it be okay for you to go up the mountain right away? I heard that the terrain in the north is quite rough so I thought it would be better to go prepared.”

“Everything you need for camping is in a bag with subspace magic so it’s okay.”

In fact he had put it in his inventory but he couldn’t explain it so he lied about it. Felix was surprised by Zeke’s words.

“My goodness. You are more thorough than I your guide.”

The two sent the sheriff ahead and began to follow the trail up the mountain.

Zeke scanned the trail with his eyes and gave Felix directions.

It was not a lie that he was a native of the Duchy of Troy as Felix rode the mountain path quite skillfully.

    That was when.

    “Felix.”

    Zeke called Felix.

    “Why are you doing that?”

He raised his hand to stop Felix and slowly walked towards the forest.

Zeke slowly approached the large tree blocking his view dagger in hand.

There was something behind the tree.

    ‘this….’

That something was a corpse that had had its fluids sucked out and shriveled up like a mummy.

Zeke looked around to see if there was any demon but he didn’t feel any signs.

    He gestured towards Felix.

Felix frowned as he looked at the body following Zeke’s gesture.

    Zeke slowly approached the body.

The first place he checked was the nape of the neck.

If you are attacked by a vampire all the blood in your body will drain and if you are unlucky you will end up as a mummy.

But there was no mark on the nape of the corpse’s neck.

Zeke examined the corpse’s skin but there were no teeth marks anywhere to indicate that he had sucked bodily fluids.

    His expression was distorted.

‘I thought it wouldn’t be like that since most vampires don’t come from the north. But could it be this demon…?’

Felix standing behind Zeke shook his head and said.

“Oh my god I’ve never seen a corpse like this before.”

    Zeke said getting up.

“I guess we’ll have to camp here today. The chase will resume as soon as the sun rises.”
