    Episode 311

“Put down your weapons. I am not the enemy of the Highlanders.”

Despite Zeke’s words the man in black with twin swords and the swordsman with the bastard sword remained silent.

They seemed to be struggling with how to take Zeke’s words without letting down their guard.

‘Anyway there are so many dirty suspicions.’

The two Highlanders in front were those who had a connection with Zeke in a past life.

‘Adnan and Bodmir. It’s been a while both of you.’

Adnan was a warrior from Ishtar who taught Zeke the knowledge of poisons and martial arts and Bodmir was a warrior from the north who was his comrade when he captured the barbarian tribes and demons in the Giants’ Mountains.

Since the Highlanders were forbidden from interacting with the outside world after the Oath few people know of their existence.

After completing the mission to hunt the demons under the orders of the High Table they would simply wait until they were given another mission and then move again repeating the process.

Because of this even among Highlanders there was little interaction so when outsiders mentioned it they were wary.

Zeke slowly took out the mirror the hermit had given him from his inventory.

“There is no need to be alarmed. I know the story of the Highlanders from the hermit of the High Table.”

He threw a mirror in front of the two of them.

The two men aimed their swords at Zeke without letting their guard down.

Then Bodmir stretched out his sword and tapped the mirror that Sieg had thrown then looked back at Adnan.

    “I think it’s real?”

At Bodmir’s words Adnan relaxed his posture and picked up the mirror that had fallen on the floor.

When he took off his hood his face was revealed.

Dark skin and a face full of scars.

It was the same face as Adnan I had seen in my previous life.

He looked at the mirror this way and that then threw it at Zeke again.

Zig took the mirror back and spoke to the two people.

    “My name is Zeke Draker.”

At those words Bodmir who had a full beard and a bear-like physique laughed as he drew his bastard sword.

“Poohaha! That guy is that guy. The guy who snatched Nigel’s shoe dragon.”

Adnan after hearing Bodmir’s words looked at Zeke and said:

    “Why is Draker’s knight here?”

Just like in his previous life Adnan was suspicious and meticulous in everything he did.

Since there was a rule that Highlanders had to travel in pairs or more when on missions Adnan who had a meticulous personality was often paired with the relatively free-spirited Bodmir.

This arrangement was also a matter decided by High Table.

‘The master said that the other high tables were annoyed and were passing the buck to the leader.’

Zeke recalled the past and spoke to Adnan.

“The leader of the Zhou tribe and the knights of the Suin tribe’s chieftain’s family were isolated due to the sudden appearance of a monster so I came to help them escape.”

    Bodmir nodded at his words.

“As expected from a guy who caught a dragon.”

Adnan asked pointing to the hounds behind him.

“What is your relationship with those guys?”

“As you can see they are the enemy. They are Emperor Rom’s direct subordinate unit called the Hounds.”

“Does that mean you have nothing to do with the monsters and demons that appeared here?”

“Well if it was me who did it I wouldn’t be going through this trouble.”

But Adnan still had his doubts.

    ‘It’s tricky.’

Zig clicked his tongue inwardly and asked Adnan.

“Are they all dead? If there are any alive I’d like to question them.”

“We don’t do things that way.”

Security was the lifeblood of the Highlander.

The moment they saw them the hunting dogs were already as good as dead.

‘Adnan is a difficult opponent but he is still understandable. Since it has come to this it would be better to borrow the power of the Highlanders.’

    Zeke spoke to Adnan again.

“I heard from the hermit that Highlanders are warriors specialized in hunting beasts.”

He paused for a moment and then continued.

“We must return to the Autonomous Zone through the canyon filled with monsters. If you can help us you will pay a price.”

At those words Adnan glared at Zeke and said.

“You’re mistaken about the Highlanders. We’re not mercenaries who hunt demons on the orders of outsiders.”

Bodmir who was standing next to him suddenly intervened.

“I do it sometimes. Just to earn some pocket money?”

Adnan glared at Bodmir who was spouting useless words.

Bodmir turned his head whistled and tried to avoid the conversation.

    Zeke said to Adnan.

“Aren’t we here on a mission to defeat the demons anyway? We have strong knights mercenaries and barbarians. And since I can use the power of light I’m at an advantage in hunting demons.”

Bodmir said with a curious expression at Zeke’s words.

“The power of light? What is that?”

Zeke held Roland and unfurled the flag.

    Woohoo!

A soft light appeared on Bodmir and Adnan’s bodies.

    “Whoa!”

It was Bodmir pulling out his glowing bastard sword and swinging it around.

Adnan said looking at such a Zig.

“If you had this kind of power you wouldn’t need our help.”

“Even with this kind of power it’s not easy to lead hundreds of people through a canyon full of monsters. Since you said you’re used to this I think you’d know a safe way to get through the canyon. It would be even better if you could take care of escorting them as well.”

The reason Zeke brought this up was none other than because of Bodmir’s abilities.

Having worked with him on missions in the Giant Mountains in his previous life Zeke knew that Bodmir was adept at finding hidden paths.

‘You can check the overall terrain with the system map but hidden paths aren’t marked… so no matter how much I look at it I can’t figure it out. If it’s Bodmir he’ll probably know a safe path.’

    Adnan said looking at Zeke.

“What do we get if we accept your offer?”

“I’ll distract them. Then it’ll be easier for you to hunt the demons.”

Adnan listened to Zeke’s words thought for a moment and then looked towards Bodmir.

    Bodmir nodded to Adnan.

Adnan took a moment to collect his thoughts and then spoke to Zeke.

“Knight of Draker. I will accept your offer. I will show you the way. Escort is not possible. We have our own missions.”

Zeke was a little surprised that Adnan readily accepted his offer.

‘I thought you’d be more picky but surprisingly.’

Bodmir approached Sieg and held out his large hand like a bear’s paw.

“Poohaha. The guy who caught the shoe dragon. I’ve always wanted to see what kind of guy he is. He’s younger than I thought. My name is Bodmir. That jerk is Adnan. He’s sensitive so be careful.”

    Zeke shook hands with Bodmir.

“I didn’t expect to meet a Highlander here what a surprise.”

    Bodmir nodded to Zeke’s words.

“We’re the same. We didn’t know that demons would suddenly appear here. This is our first time being assigned to this area.”

Even in Zeke’s memory the two had never been sent to the ghetto area in their previous life.

‘I don’t think they would have dispatched Adnan and Bodmir simply to hunt the demons.’

Adnan who was standing behind spoke to Zeke.

“The reason I accepted your offer is to complete our mission.”

“Isn’t hunting the devil your mission?”

“That’s natural for a Highlander. There was a separate order from the High Table.”

When Adnan brought up the topic of directives Bodmir was surprised and interrupted.

“Hey Adnan. Is it okay to tell that to an outsider?”

Adnan clicked his tongue at those words.

“Bodmir. Read the Oath Rules carefully. The rule is to properly inform those who agree to cooperate about the relevant missions.”

Bodmir scratched his head at Adnan’s words.

“There was something like that. The rulebook is too complicated. You know it well so it’s fine.”

Adnan shook his head and turned his gaze back to Zeke.

“The higher-ups suspect that a dimensional rift has opened up here.”

    Zeke frowned at Adnan’s words.

    ‘If that’s true it’s a headache.’

Zeke knew what a dimensional rift was but pretended not to know and asked Adnan.

    “What does dimensional rift mean?”

“It literally means a gap between dimensions. Magic flows out of the gap and most of the magic is monsters or beasts that have been exposed to it and transformed.”

It was common knowledge among all Highlanders but little was known to the outside world.

If this fact were to be revealed it could lead to more abuses like the current Empire so knowledge of it was strictly controlled within the Highlanders.

Since he knew of the existence of the Hermit and the Highlander it was only natural that he would tell the story.

Most of the demons come from the Giant Mountains and High Table speculates that there is a huge dimensional rift behind the Giant Mountains and that the demons that come across the mountain range are contaminated with the magic flowing out from there.

There was a rumor going around among Highlanders that the leader of the High Table was filling the dimensional gap and that the frequency of demonic appearances would naturally decrease over time but it was never confirmed whether this was true or not.

‘If a dimensional rift has appeared here the magic might infect the brainwashed monsters and turn them into demons. And if ancient species or abnormal species appear there too…’

As the dimensional gap widens not only magic but also the unclean things trapped in the abyssal space burst out.

Those who were more powerful than the average demons or like ancient or abnormal species were of this type.

    Zeke said looking at Adnan.

“Is it your mission to close that dimensional gap?”

    Adnan nodded.

“Yes. We also need to find out how they opened the dimensional rift.”

“Good. As I said before I’ll draw their attention. After the party passes through the canyon I’ll detonate magic bombs here and there to further confuse them.”

    Bodmir chuckled at Zig’s words.

“It’s very refreshing and I like it. Was it Zeke Draker? He’s a decent Draker.”

Adnan also agreed with Zeke’s plan.

“Okay. I will accept that offer.”

    * * *

Zeke returned to the camp alone leaving Adnan and Bodmir behind.

The dead bodies of demons were strewn all over the place where they returned.

Thanks to Zeke’s buff they were able to deal with the demons that attacked their base without difficulty.

Zeke told Helen and Crouching Flame’s Song Big Joe that he had found a way out of the canyon while avoiding the monsters.

When Big Joe asked how they found a path they didn’t even know about Zig thought for a moment and then answered.

“While exploring the surroundings I stumbled upon the path where the phoenix was hidden.”

When the auspicious phoenix found the way Big Joe and even the song of the crouching flame were immediately convinced.

Even Helen who was next to him nodded with an expression of understanding.

‘Even if they are like that why your older sister too?’

Although it didn’t have any special abilities it was a good phoenix to use as an excuse in difficult situations.

After sorting out the situation Zeke led his troops into the valley following the path Bodmir had shown him.

Then we found a cave cleverly hidden behind a rock.

‘It’s hidden in a place like this so you can’t find it even with a map.’

The entrance was narrow but the cave gradually grew larger as we went deeper.

Turning on the map and examining the terrain inside Zeke realized that the cave was spread out throughout the canyon like an ant hole.

‘It doesn’t look like a naturally occurring cave but rather one that was created artificially a long time ago.’

Old artificial structures and thousands of ancient monsters summoned from the demon realm.

    Something occurred to Zeke.

‘Could this be the base of the Demon King’s army that fought against the Kronos coalition forces?’

Zeke recalled that in the past the Kingdom of Kronos was located where Baranaon is now located.

If the Demon King’s army was stationed to attack Kronos this area would be the most suitable.

Because it came right up to Kronos’ chin.

‘So these monsters were taken directly from here and not from the Forest of the Forgotten?’

I didn’t know how they could revive monsters from two thousand years ago but I was suspicious since the Highlanders suspected that there must be a dimensional rift here.

At that moment something appeared in the sight of the ghost soldier that Zeke had released.

    ‘Those hunting dogs…’

Zeke felt himself leaning further into his assumptions.
