    Episode 138

“You caught all this by yourself?”

    “Is it not enough?”

    The hermit shook his head.

    “Oh no. That’s enough.”

I never thought I would catch ten demons in less than an hour.

Even for the most excellent knights hunting demons was not an easy task.

It was necessary to understand the characteristics of the demons and also have the ability to secretly pursue them.

Moreover Mount Uroboros is a place where there are so many evil beasts that the story’s hermit himself has to settle down. Each and every one of them is a special beast.

The hermit looked around at Zig with suspicious eyes.

“…Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Are you a Highlander by any chance?”

Zeke shook his head pretending not to know.

    “What is that?”

Zeke who spoke so casually seemed to have no idea what a Highlander was.

Eunja shook her head as she watched Zig display his desperate acting skills.

“No. Hmm. There’s no way that’s possible. Hmm no matter what there’s no way this is possible.”

The hermit looked at Zig and asked him furtively.

“Do you need a new job?”

“I’m already overwhelmed with what I’m doing right now.”

Zeke cut the hermit off immediately fearing that he might have to swear the Highlander oath again.

The hermit said smacking his lips.

“Hmm that’s quite a shame. I think Nigel would really like it if he saw it.”

Zeke almost hiccups when he suddenly hears his teacher’s name.

    ‘Absolutely not in this life.’

Zeke didn’t want to meet his master Nigel even in his dreams.

    He quickly changed the subject.

“Now tell me about the holy relics.”

Since I passed the test he had given me I couldn’t help but answer the question.

The hermit looked at Zig and asked.

“Where did you hear the term ‘holy relic’?”

“I happened to meet the retinue of the ‘Lord of the Lowest Place’ and heard that there was a competition among the demons over the holy relic.”

At Zig’s words the hermit dropped the fan he was holding.

    “What are you talking about!”

    “…Yes? I answered because you asked…”

“Tell me again. Is it true that the ‘Lord of the Lowest Place’ has appeared?”

“It wasn’t the demon that appeared but the demon’s followers who took on human flesh. Its name was… a werewolf-like creature called Griesmodal.”

    The hermit’s face turned pale.

“Oh my god. A Griess Modal? He’s a famous beast trainer and master of 999 beasts.”

“Are you a familiar with the Demon Race?”

“I don’t know for sure. Anyway that’s not the point. The demons are competing over the holy relics?”

“Yes. That guy named Griessmodal said that if you bring the Holy Relic your clan’s rank will rise and you can have the name of a constellation.”

    “Ugh…..”

The hermit slumped down with a dejected expression.

Zig looked at the hermit and asked.

“But what does it mean for a demon to have the name of a constellation? It’s not like they become demons.”

The hermit barely managed to pick up the fan and cool down saying:

    “That’s what I mean.”

    “Huh? What does that mean?”

“If you have a name like that you become a devil.”

    “The devil is a constellation?”

“The devil is also a constellation. The constellation of the evil side.”

“I thought there were only things like the constellations of the sun god or moon goddess.”

    The hermit shook his head.

“The demons were originally the same constellation as us but as they fell their nature changed. In the direction they desired. The ‘Lord of the Lowest Place’ became the constellation name based on his own desire.”

“So the higher the level of the Demon Tribe the more likely it is that you will become a demon.”

“Even the Demons are ultimately limited to the limits of mortals. If they become a constellation they can overcome those limits and become immortal.”

Zeke understood why the demons were trying so hard to seize the holy relic.

    He asked the hermit.

“Does the Holy Relic have the power to turn demons into devils?”

    The hermit shook his head.

“No way. The one who needs the relic is probably another demon. That demon would have the power to turn the demon into a demon.”

“If there is a human who finds the holy relic and offers it up it would be easy for the demon to fulfill his dream of immortality.”

“Immortal? Well that’s a bit ambiguous. A strong demon could probably give you something similar.”

It seemed that I understood why even the Emperor of the Empire came forward to search for the Luverne bloodline.

Princess Arina thought that the Holy Kingdom and the Empire of Rome were looking for a healer who could perform miracles that could cure any wound but that was not all.

‘I’ll use the Luverne bloodline to find the holy relic offer it to the devil and gain immortality. If that’s the crazy emperor he’ll do it more than enough.’

It was Zeke who thought that he had to find the holy relic first somehow.

The hermit was troubled and asked Zigg.

“If the devil and the demons are involved then it’s really a big deal. Hmm with something like this happening why doesn’t Karma show any unusual signs?”

Zik was surprised to hear the hermit’s words and asked.

“Do you know the word karma?”

The hermit was rather embarrassed by Zig’s words.

“Karma? I know. But how do you know that?”

Zig calmly responded to the hermit’s reaction.

“I found that horse in the Terracan Draker’s resting place I discovered earlier.”

“The haven of the Terracan Drakers. Oh really. I think I’ve been surprised more today than I have been in the last 300 years.”

    “What on earth is karma?”

The hermit hesitated at Zig’s words and slowly opened his mouth.

“Karma in a word is like a set of cause and effect.”

    “Causality?”

“Yes. If I plant a seed in the ground after about a hundred years a beautiful tree will grow on that land. There are many causal relationships between the seed and the tree. And karma is the general term for the causal relationships between concepts.”

    “…It’s difficult.”

The hermit stuck the fan he was holding into the ground.

“What if a tree grows in this state after a hundred years?”

“It seems like it will be difficult.”

“There is no proper causality between the debt and the tree. But….”

The hermit waved his hand toward the fan.

Then suddenly small branches sprouted from the fan.

    Zeke asked in surprise.

    “Is it magic?”

“Magic is also a means of adjusting causality. However this directly adjusts karma to narrow the causality between the debt and the tree. That’s why buds sprouted and branches grew from debt that couldn’t become a tree.”

Zik began to understand the hermit’s words little by little.

‘So are karma points a numerical representation of the karmas that can adjust causality? So it’s possible to do things that cannot be done using karma points.’

As the hermit waved his hand again the fan returned to its original form and fell into his hand.

“Anyway. Back to the original story whether they are demons or demons they are beings that cannot appear in this world.”

“What you’re saying is that in order for such beings to appear in the world many causal laws must be adjusted.”

“Oh you’re smart. That’s right. The world is ultimately made up of cause and effect. If it leans to one side the balance is broken. When that balance is about to be broken karma shows strange signs but I’m saying it’s strange because I don’t feel that.”

“Could it be that the demons have figured out a way to adjust causality and avoid the signs of karma?”

“I think that’s how it is for now. Hmm. I suddenly have a big worry. I guess I’ll have to call a high table for the first time in a while.”

Zig was surprised to hear the hermit’s words.

The High Table were the representatives of the Highlanders scattered throughout the continent and had the authority to coordinate the guidelines laid down by the Covenant.

Since his mentor Nigel was also a member of High Table Zeke was also familiar with the concept.

‘I never thought I’d see two High Tables in my past life. Should I call it luck or odd?’

The hermit was worried and then said to Zig.

“It may be a bit odd to say this so suddenly but I think you need to find the holy relic quickly.”

    “That’s what I came for.”

The hermit nodded and waved his fan again.

Then before he knew it a book appeared in his hands.

“Let’s see. The story about the Holy Relic… So there you are. The Holy Relic is something the Fairy King created for humans. Do you know this story?”

    Zeke nodded.

“I heard it from the herald of Luverne.”

“Then the story will be quick. There are three relics in the phenomenal world. Of them I know the exact location of one.”

    “What about the other two?”

“Hmm I’ll ask the other members of High Table about that. Everyone’s lived long enough so there must be someone who knows.”

    “Okay what do you know?”

“The holy relic I know of is the ‘Holy Grail’. Have you heard of it?”

“This is my first time hearing about it.”

The hermit folded his debt and began to explain.

“The Holy Grail is a holy relic that is connected to the Terracan Draker and Luverne that you mentioned earlier.”

    “How do you say that?”

“You know that Terracan Draker defeated the evil dragon Bahamut and gave birth to the legend of the Dragon Slayer?”

    “I guess I’m a Draker too.”

“There are many parts missing from the legend of the Dragon Slayer that have been passed down to the current Drakes.”

This was something that Zeke had previously felt while researching the legend of the Dragon Slayer.

Because the Draker family censored the legend of the Dragon Slayer and unified the edition into one the information was not properly preserved.

The hermit shook his fan and took out another book.

    A few books appeared.

“I found a story about the legend of the Dragon Slayer. Man the Dragon Slayer story is so complicated and confusing. By the way not everything I say is correct. I’m only reading the stories that have been revealed and recorded.”

Zig looked curiously at the books floating around the hermit.

Even though she felt Zig’s gaze Eunja paid it no mind and began to tell the story behind the legend of the Dragon Slayer.

“Actually the term Dragon Slayer doesn’t just refer to Terracan Drakers. It refers to a type of unit.”

“Are you talking about the Dragon Slayer Unit?”

“Yes. It is true that he is the leader of the Terracan Draker Dragon Slayer Corps. However if he had only been there the liberation war would have been lost. If he had not had his helpers.”

Zeke recalled the past footage from the Liberation War that he had seen at the 4th Defense Base.

Led by the Terracan Drakers many races joined forces to stop the demons and dragons.

The hermit slowly opened his mouth.

“One of them was Claudia Luverne the ‘Wizard of Brilliant Light.’”

“Lubern? This is the first time I’ve heard that the founder of Luubern helped the wizard Terracan Draker.”

“It’s more than that. Claudia and Terracan were lovers.”

    “yes?”

“In order to lead the liberation war to victory Claudia used the Holy Grail a holy relic to create weapons that could use light magic and the demons. With Claudia’s power Terracan Draker was able to lead the Dragon Slayer force and defeat the evil dragon Bahamut’s demon force.”

“Then does the power of the Holy Grail the holy relic create light magic?”

“No. The original power of the Holy Grail is to grant health and longevity to those who drink water from it. Claudia drew out the power of the Fairy King within the Holy Grail and created the magic of light.”

“Then the Luverne bloodline is the successor to Claudia Luverne’s bloodline. So the magic of light is also only passed down to the Luverne bloodline.”

“That’s right. A child was born between Claudia and Terracan and that child is the founder of the Luverne Dynasty.”

Zig was surprised to hear the hermit’s words.

“Are you saying that the Luverne Dynasty is the bloodline of the Terracan Drakers?”

“To be exact it was closer to Claudia than Terracan. Their children were both healer class.”

    “Hey healer?”

“Yes. The power that Claudia created using the Holy Grail created the bloodline ability called the Blessing of Light.”

    “oh my god.”

The fact that Terrakan Draker’s child was a healer was nowhere to be found in the Dragon Slayer legend.

    Then Zeke asked the hermit.

“So after the first born of the healer class did Terrakan Draker have another child? One with the talent of a swordsman?”

    The hermit shook his head.

“Unfortunately Claudia passed away during childbirth. Terracan loved Claudia so much that he had no intention of marrying another woman.”

    Zeke’s face hardened.

“Then what happened to the current Dragon Slayer family? It is said that Terrakan is the founder…”

The hermit waved his fan and opened a new book.

“The Draker family has a complicated story. Let’s see. Terracan Draker… Terracan is here. In fact the Draker family has existed since before. Since the time of the King of Heroes.”

    Zeke knew that too.

This was because the noble knight Shatton who was a blacksmith had the surname of Draker.

‘Is the real Shaton Draker the current founder of the Draker family? If so why is the founder of the family recorded as the Dragon Slayer Terrakan Draker and not the Black Sword Shaton Draker?’

    Then the hermit continued speaking.

“There’s an interesting story written there. Terrakan Draker was a man who was not recognized by the Draker family and was banished.”

Zeke looked as if he had been hit in the head with a hammer.

“Are you talking about the Terracan Draker?”

    The hermit continued speaking slowly.

“The name Terracan was given to him when he was a free knight. His original name was….”

The hermit slowly opened his mouth.

    “Siegfried.”
