Childhood Friend of the Zenith – 595 (Part 2)

595 (Part 2)
“Even if it weren’t them there would be others who would act for the sake of loyalty.
Why was it me of all people?
That was my question.
Upon hearing my question the deity replied.
“I don’t really know either.”
It was a stranger response than I expected.
“…What?”
“Why did it have to be you? I don’t know either.”
The deity truly looked as if he couldn’t understand it himself.
“It just felt like it had to be you for some reason.”
“Is that the entirety of your reasoning…?”
“Yeah. If you don’t like it just say so. I have no intention of forcing you.”
“…”
The reasoning was utterly absurd.
He came to me simply because he felt he should.
Could he really be making such a huge claim based on such a ridiculous reason?
I wondered if the deity had lost his mind. But still.
“No… Yes.”
It didn’t matter.
“…For now I’ll listen to what you have to say.”
I had no intention of refusing anyway.
The Jaegal Clan was plotting something in Henan.
How could I possibly ignore that?
I couldn’t.
After all I was the one who had been planning to stir up trouble in Henan.

And now the Jaegal Clan was trying to make a move in that situation?
‘This is quite the situation.’
It couldn’t be more perfect.
The deity seemed to be asking me to stop it but as I listened I thought.
‘Why should I?’
Why would I stop such a good opportunity?
Not a chance.
This was a great opportunity.
Especially in a situation like this.
The deity slowly began to share his story.
As I listened to his words I thought in my head.
How could I turn this situation to my advantage?
That was all I needed to think about.
****************
As night gradually approached.
In a region a little distance away from Henan.
A place that could only be found much further down.
In a secret location known to no one an old man was pouring himself a drink.
Glug.
The drink filled the cup.
The old man grasped it and poured it into his mouth.
There was no sign of restraint.
He might have been careful in the past but now there was no need for that.
No one was watching.
One cup then two. And then three.
As he continued to drink the bottle gradually emptied.
As he was about to pour a fourth cup the old man suddenly thought while holding the bottle.
‘How much is left?’
How much drink was left in this bottle?
And.
How much longer until he could break free from his shackles?
“Probably it’s about the same.”
There wouldn’t be much left just like the drink in the bottle.
And that too.
Glug-.
There would only be a moment left until it was completely gone.
Once he drained the last drop he felt the bottle was completely empty.

He didn’t need any side dishes.
If he chewed over the years gone by that would serve as his side dish.
Leaving the empty bottle behind the old man slowly raised his cup.
The cup filled to the brim with drink.
It was like time.
Perhaps if he drank it all the awaited time would finally come?
What a trivial thought. The old man smiled.
As he was about to slowly bring the full cup to his lips.
“…”
The old man had to stop his moving hand.
Life returned to his once vacant eyes and his gaze sharpened.
He stared at the cup as if he were glaring at it.
The drink in the cup rippled slightly.
The moment the old man confirmed this.
“Captain!”
Someone rushed in from outside.
“We’re under attack…! Someone has attacked this place…!!”
“…”
The old man startled by the urgent voice set down the cup he was holding.
It seemed that.
“A guest has arrived.”
Despite the urgency the old man’s eyes remained calm.
“The formations surrounding the entrance have been deactivated…! Our members rushed out but… the enemy’s strength…!”
“Don’t act recklessly.”
At the old man’s cold words the man’s mouth shut immediately.
“It would be awkward to let the guest see.”
“Captain…?”
“Prepare more drinks.”
The man seemed unable to comprehend the words his eyes trembling.
They were under attack and suddenly he was talking about drinks.
This was not the time for that.
Just as he was about to speak out against the Captain.
“It seems a precious guest has arrived.”
Thud-.
“…!”
At the sound from behind the man’s body stiffened.
At the same time.
Whoooosh-!
A gentle breeze blew through the corridor.
What was the problem with that you might ask?
This place was completely enclosed.
It meant that the wind should not be blowing here.
Then what was this wind?
Thud.
Footsteps grew closer.
A leisurely and calm pace.
Thud.
It sounded unusually loud.
Whoooosh.
The wind brushed against the man’s shoulder.
Was it an illusion? The man felt the wind was somehow heavy.
Cold sweat began to trickle down his stiff body.
Whoooosh-!
Pfft-!
The wind blew out all the flames that clung to the walls.
Suddenly darkness enveloped the area.
However the darkness did not linger for long.
Whoosh-!
Flames ignited once more on the extinguished backs.
But this flame was strikingly different from the original.
It was a purplish hue.
For some reason the flames were tinged with purple.
Moreover even as the flames blazed the darkness felt even denser.
Within that darkness.
“Nice to meet you.”
A voice echoed through the space.
Clack clack clack clack-!
The man’s mouth trembled and his teeth clashed rapidly.
Upon hearing the voice his body began to react on its own.
It was a basic instinct of humanity.
Fear.
The emotion the man felt was undoubtedly that.
Leaving the man behind.
The old man focused on the suddenly appearing figure.
Dressed in a deep dark martial arts uniform wearing an alien white mask.
Walking calmly with his hands behind his back.
Seeing this the old man asked.
“You’re an uninvited guest. What brings you here?”
The figure did not answer the old man’s question.
He simply stared at the old man in silence.
“Not answering huh….”
“Jaegal Clan Master.”
“…!”
“Is that enough if I call you that?”
At those words the old man’s brow furrowed.
Not only had they ambushed this place but it seemed they also knew his identity.
“…Who are you exactly?”
“It’s not particularly important who I am. What’s important here is not that.”
Thud.
The figure resumed his steps slowly approaching the old man.
“Captain–!!”
As the man who had been frozen shouted and tried to rush in.
The old man raised his hand to stop him.
“It seems you have some purpose.”
“I do. A very important purpose.”
The approaching figure stood before the old man.
The old man frowned at him.
The eyes visible beyond the mask were very unsettling.
“I’ve come here personally because I have something to discuss with you.”
“…”
The casual tone was grating to the old man’s ears but he thought it suited the figure too well.
Not only had he broken through the formations set up at the headquarters but he had also come here alone.
He must not let his guard down.
Hiding his true feelings the old man asked.
“Something to discuss… What is it?”
“Before that. What should I call you?”
“…”
Jaegal Clan Head. Is that what you want to call me?
The old man hesitated for a moment but it didn’t take long to find an answer.
Given that he had come all the way here and mentioned the Jaegal Clan.
He must be someone who knows to some extent.
This meant there was no need for unnecessary probing.
“I’m no longer called that.”
“Then?”
“Cheonra Heukmangdae.”
The old man said to the figure.
“That is the name of the unit I lead. So Captain Cheonra. That will be sufficient.”
After introducing himself the old man felt something strange.
“Hmmm.”
In the voice of the figure upon hearing the name.
“It’s not bad.”
There was strangely a sense of pleasure seeping through.”
