    ◈ Episode 238: Accidental Encounter (5)

Ludger unconsciously stretched out his hand and caught the dark spirit rushing towards his face.

Although I was amazed by the soft feel of my fingertips I was also puzzled by the sudden behavior of the dark spirit.

‘The spirit isn’t afraid of me?’

Ludger who wields the power of a god is an object avoided by spirits.

Of course the attitude toward the spirit varies depending on its level.

At intermediate level spirits if you are of the same mind you can cooperate with each other.

However other than that middle-level spirits basically had a strong tendency to be reluctant or hostile toward Ludger.

‘Still this guy rushed at me as soon as he saw me.’

Are you full of courage or fearless?

Or maybe contrary to appearances his level as a spirit was quite high.

    “oh!”

Selina too let out a scream as she realized belatedly that her spirit had rushed towards Ludger and was caught in one hand.

“Teacher Lou Ludger! Are you okay?”

    “yes. Rather here.”

Ludger held out the spirit in his hand.

Even at the moment he was caught in Ludger’s hand the guy was glaring at him the whole time.

Selina took the black cotton ball and held it tightly in her arms.

“Hey. “If you run wild you can’t use it.”

The spirit wriggled as if disapproving but Selina showed a stern expression and did not let the spirit go.

No matter how I looked at it it looked like a mother scolding her child.

“That’s fascinating. “I never thought it was really a dark spirit.”

“Oh yes. “I’ve only heard about it but this is the first time I’ve seen it actually exist.”

“What are the reactions of other elemental science teachers?”

“yes? “You only showed it to Dr. Ludger for the first time?”

    “ah. “It was like that.”

Ludger stroked his chin and examined the dark spirit.

    ‘That’s amazing.’

At least within his knowledge the rarity and value of the dark spirit could not be guessed.

However Selina did not seem to know much about the rarity of this spirit.

It would be better to tell me in advance so as not to be surprised later.

“Miss Selina. Do you know what kind of spirit the dark spirit is?”

    “yes?”

Looking at that reaction it seemed like he didn’t know much.

“Aren’t dark spirits just rare entities?”

“It is not an issue that can be simply overlooked. Ms. Selina. What do you think darkness is?”

“Uh… do I have to answer now?”

Selina was taken aback by the sight of Ludger suddenly showing off his skills as a teacher as if some kind of switch had been flipped.

    “What do you think?”

Selina felt like she had to answer like this so she thought seriously before coming up with an answer.

“Well the darkness is literally pitch black with nothing in it. “Isn’t it the opposite of light?”

“I usually think that way but….”

    “ah. “No.”

Looking at Ludger’s reaction Selina became sullen as it seemed like something was wrong.

“Miss Selina. “What would it be like if there was nothing in this world?”

    “Nothing?”

“yes. Grass trees earth wind and water. And even the light. Complete nothingness and emptiness without everything. “What form do you think it takes?”

    “that….”

Without realizing it Selina’s eyes fell on the spirit she was holding in her arms.

    “Surely this kid?”

    “you’re right. “It is darkness.”

Ludger pointed to the narrow alley where he and Selina were standing.

To be exact the shadow cast on the street corner.

“A state of absence where there is nothing. That’s what darkness is. The opposite of light is not darkness. The absence of light and everything else is the state of darkness.”

    “then….”

“The fundamental meaning of the element of darkness is much bigger and more vast than what Teacher Selina thinks.”

For example there is a night after the sun sets.

Even on a pitch-black night there is no complete darkness.

Even in a forest in the middle of the night when there is no light there are things that can be seen.

This is because light exists even though it is a very weak amount as does starlight and moonlight in the sky.

It is the same even if dark clouds cover it.

Any object reflects light albeit very weakly.

Therefore scholars sometimes call the concept of darkness the ‘minimization’ of light.

This was because it was practically impossible for light to not exist.

The same goes for dark attribute magic.

In the end darkness attribute magic is nothing more than ‘imitating’ darkness with mana.

The same goes for [Ather Nocturnus] the magic beast handled by Ludger.

It looked like a pitch black shadow but this could not be considered complete darkness either.

That’s why the Magic Tower also gives color titles for each attribute element.

The place for black which represents the attribute of darkness always remained blank.

However the dark spirit that Selina commands is pure darkness without any impurities or noise.

Considering that spirits are spiritual beings born from pure natural elements.

It means that the spirit of darkness is not just a fake imitated by magic but real darkness.

“Maybe it’s a really great spirit.”

“yes? “Is this kid that bad?”

Selina couldn’t understand Ludger talking like that.

That’s because the spirit of darkness she holds in her arms is so small and cute-looking.

Even if you say that such a cute child is amazing it doesn’t make sense intuitively.

Ludger stroked his chin as if he was thinking for a moment and opened his mouth.

“It may seem like a bit of a random question but do you Selina believe in the existence of God?”

“Uh um. Maybe? “If you had to decide whether to believe or not I would still believe.”

    “Why do you believe?”

    Why do you believe it?

Selina was embarrassed by the question but answered calmly.

“There are many people who believe in God and in fact history records events such as God’s grace.”

“Then let me ask something else. “Do you think the devil exists?”

“no way. That’s not true. “No matter how much I like rumors and ghost stories I don’t believe in them.”

Selina thought Ludger was joking but Ludger asked her seriously.

“Why do you think there isn’t one?”

“yes? Well there is no devil right? “I said I didn’t have something that wasn’t there.”

“Can you prove to me that the devil does not exist?”

Selina was speechless at Ludger’s words.

Basically proof is limited to ‘what exists’.

How do you prove that it doesn’t exist?

Ludger who saw Selina’s confused expression because he did not understand smiled and said.

“Miss Selina. For those who believe there is a God it is easy to prove it. Because all you have to do is show us one piece of evidence that God exists.”

    “Is that so?”

“But on the other hand if you want to say that the devil does not exist you have to prove ‘everyone’ that there is no devil anywhere in the world.”

Selina’s eyes widened when she heard the word “everyone.”

I understood what Ludger was trying to say.

“I see. Even if I claim that there is no devil there may be a devil somewhere in the world that has not been discovered by anyone.”

Selina also found Ludger’s theory interesting as if she didn’t become Seorn’s teacher for nothing.

“you’re right. Proving existence is easy but proving absence is impossible. And that child.”

Ludger pointed to the dark spirit Selina was holding in her arms.

“The spirit of darkness is literally a being born from pure darkness. Darkness is the complete absence of light. “It is an existence that proves its absence.”

    “That’s what it was.”

Selina nodded as if she understood why Ludger said this when he saw the dark spirit.

Selina who belatedly realized something asked with her shoulders shaking.

“Uh then you’re not planning on experimenting on this child or anything right?”

    “Why am I like that?”

    “uh? Wasn’t it?”

“I only told you this because it seems that Teacher Selina does not know the value of the newly contracted spirit.”

In the first place Ludger had no particular interest in the existence of spirits.

“If you want to be interested in spirits and devote yourself to research shouldn’t you have a connection with spirits? “It’s far from me.”

“Oh right. “It was like that.”

Selina recalled that Ludger had a constitution that was hated by spirits.

In fact the small and petite lower-level spirits were scared when they saw Ludger and avoided him.

“But why did this child run towards Mr. Ludger?”

“I’m not sure about that either.”

Ludger said that and stared at the cotton ball in Selina’s arms.

The guy was glaring at Ludger as if he wasn’t going to lose.

While puzzled by the inexplicable hostility Ludger felt a strange sense of déjà vu.

“What did you name this newly contracted spirit?”

    “ah. “You mean this kid?”

Selina said with a bright smile.

    “Esmeralda.”

At the scene where people gathered noisily after the water splash exploded Merylda and Cheryl realized that there was no point in fighting.

    ‘I missed Selina!’

    ‘Mr. Ludger is gone!’

Ludger and Selina disappeared due to the sudden disturbance.

Merilda and Cheryl had conflicting goals but they were both equally insecure.

Merilda is worried that Selina won’t be able to do anything on her own.

On the other hand Cheryl was worried that something might happen because the two were together.

‘What should I do? I can’t find people on my own.’

‘Maybe it’s okay. If things continue like this their date will end safely.’

The two people who were contemplating each other naturally exchanged glances.

    “Until I find it.”

    “Let’s move together.”

A temporary alliance was formed like that.

However finding the person who disappeared just because the number of hands increased from one to two seemed remote.

“Where did the two of you go?”

“First of all wouldn’t you have moved to the place with the highest probability of going in this area?”

    “For example…?”

    “Like a date spot…?”

There are many tourist attractions on Royal Street but there is only one place you are most likely to go on a date.

    ‘Musical theater!’

It is rumored that you must stop by at least once if you come to Royal Street.

It may not be Ludger but Selina would definitely have suggested Ludger go there.

However the problem here was that the two people did not yet know the geography of this place.

Even if you could just look for a sign it was difficult to do so with so many people wandering around.

Since I had to chase after Ludger and Selina as quickly as possible I didn’t want to waste time.

In that case I had to find someone who knew the geography of this place well.

But no matter how much I looked around the street all I saw were customers from outside.

‘This is how I miss it.’

At that time Merilda and Cheryl caught sight of a man.

“Hmm. “The presence of a beautiful woman in trouble somewhere.”

    “….”

    “….”

The blonde handsome man with exotic skin was dressed casually as if he were out for a walk.

No matter how you look at him his behavior could only be seen as a resident of this place but the problem was his unique frivolity.

    ‘Something.’

‘He’s the kind of person who will get tired if you get involved with him for no reason.’

Normally she would have avoided him but due to the circumstances Merilda mustered up the courage as an older man and approached him.

“excuse me. “I have something to ask you.”

“yes. You tell me. Beautiful lady. Would you like to have a cup of tea? Oh my. “You have eyes to see.”

You said something like that from the first moment. Not an ordinary human.

‘What is this man? ‘Do I look easy?’

    joy.

Merilda crossed her arms as she thought so.

“this. sorry. “I do this without even realizing it when I see a pretty person.”

    “…Well then let’s move on.”

Merilda was taken aback by the man’s subsequent compliments.

‘…Mr. Merilda. Your guard is too weak.’

Cheryl looked at him with a subtle gaze from the side.

Meanwhile the conversation between Merilda and the man continued.

“ah. You are looking for a musical performance hall. I know it well. “I will guide you.”

    “oh! Thank you so much!”

Even though it was unreliable Cheryl decided to tag along.

    * * *

    “…You mean Esmeralda?”

    “yes.”

“Why did you give it that name?”

“It just felt like that. That name I heard several times in my dreams. “I thought there was a good reason why this kid signed a contract with me.”

    “…Is that so?”

    Ludger thought of Esmeralda.

She should have been Selina’s true personality originally.

Her soul was bound by Quasimodo and treated like a doll but she became free and ascended to the sky.

Obviously that spirit has nothing to do with the real Esmeralda.

The only things that are similar are black similar to the color of her hair.

    Even so.

    “I think it’s a good name.”

Selina’s expression brightened at those words.

I thought that if I continued the flow like this I would be able to naturally suggest the next destination to Ludger.

It was a moment when Selina was anxiously contemplating how to start the conversation.

    ──!

Esmeralda the dark spirit held in Selina’s arms trembled greatly and was reverse-summoned as if running away.

    “Uh huh? “Are you Esmeralda?”

The ideal did not stop there.

Ludger’s face which had been still suddenly became extremely cold.

    “Mr. Ludger?”

Selina called his name but Ludger did not respond to her.

His eyes were fixed on the end of a narrow deserted street.

Ludger was always calm but this time it was different.

‘Are you afraid? ‘What on earth?’

    Ludger was clearly showing fear.

Surprised that there was something that Ludger Chelsea was afraid of Selina’s gaze naturally turned towards Ludger’s direction.

    There was a girl there.

It was a blonde girl as beautiful as a doll.

She was wearing a wine-colored dress with lots of frills and in one hand she was holding a parasol to block the sun.

It looks like a woman from an aristocratic family might have gone out for a walk alone.

The girl was standing there still staring at me for as long as she had been there.

The moment the ruby-red eyes touched Selina’s body she trembled involuntarily.

    ‘Something strange feeling…’

At that time the girl’s pink lips moved.

“It’s been a while. “My disciple.”
