◈ Episode 186: The King of the Dark Street (1)

“We will hear more details after the investigation is conducted.”

Terina Enya and the three Nightcrawler knights headed toward the inside of the mansion.

    That’s how the investigation began.

The Night Crawler Knights took out the artifact they had prepared.

It was an oval sphere the size of a human fist.

It looked like an egg of something and had a soft golden color on its surface.

    “Captain. “What is this?”

Enya showed curiosity at the sight of the object for the first time.

“ah. Come to think of it since you are only at Lederbelk you must have seen this for the first time. “It is a new artifact that was recently distributed.”

    “Artifact?”

“It’s an item created by New Magic Tower by combining memory storming theory. “It is an early type whose name has not been decided yet but its effectiveness is certain.”

    “What effect is it?”

“It allows you to read the criminal’s memories related to the incident that occurred through magic.”

The artifact reads the remaining magical power and absorbs it into a special paper contained inside me.

It was a structure that allowed you to view fragments of the magician’s memories by flowing magic onto paper imbued with magic.

This was a very innovative artifact.

Because they said that most incidents that occurred through magic could be analyzed.

    Enya’s eyes also lit up.

“That’s really awesome! “With this even unsolved cases can be solved right away.”

“There is also a limit to how much magical power remains. “The remaining magic power used by the wizard completely disappears after 36 hours so there is a time limit.”

There is also a limitation that in order to use this artifact you must have a wizard who can handle mana.

“Of course it is a great product that completely offsets its shortcomings.”

Terina placed the artifact on the shelf.

    Kirilik.

The artifact that looked like a golden egg split into four pieces and a magic stone appeared.

The magic stone surrounded by pure white paper resonated with a roaring sound and spread waves around it.

    “Did it work?”

“okay. Now this artifact will scrape away the remaining magic power turning the white paper into a different color. That way we will be able to immediately confirm whether this incident was the work of a wizard.”

    An hour passed like that.

There was no change in the paper covered with the magic stone.

    Terina frowned.

“Hey Captain. There is no change in the artifact? “I’m not the only one who looks like that right?”

“I see it that way too.”

    “I guess that’s true….”

Terina nodded with a heavy face.

“okay. “This missing person case has nothing to do with magic.”

    “That doesn’t make sense.”

This is an incident where the people inside the mansion evaporated in one night.

Just looking around I could see that there were definitely people here until last night.

A representative example was the kitchen where ingredients that had just been prepared were left hanging.

“Enya. “How many people did you say stayed in this mansion?”

“We estimate there are at least 100 people.”

“Those 100 people disappeared overnight without a trace. And that too without magic. “Do you think that’s possible?”

“…If it weren’t for magic in the first place this would be physically impossible.”

“okay. So that’s the problem. “That physically impossible thing happened in reality.”

    Any further investigation seemed pointless.

Terina recalled her conversation with Enya.

“Enya. That’s what I said a little while ago. Something to do with slums. “What did you find out there?”

“Do you remember the day we investigated Bellbott Rickson’s death and found his body in an alley?”

    “I remember.”

It was something unusual so Terina clearly remembered it.

Because even the Kalsapa Assassin got involved in the fight between the back alley tramps.

“After that the looting incident at the Kunst auction house broke out so much that I didn’t pay much attention to it but I recently had a chance to check it out.”

    “What happened to that slum?”

    “yes.”

Enya nodded with a stern expression.

“The fight that took place in the alley not long ago was the remnants of the Red Society.”

“The Red Society is said to be the organization that previously ruled the back alleys of Lederbelk.”

“I did. But that is just a name known to the outside world. “This is what was actually behind it.”

    “Silver Sun.”

Terina muttered as she looked at the quiet mansion.

“They were mafia people that Mayor Lederbelk tolerated. “Scum that is eating away at the country.”

Terina who hates villains frowned and did not hide her displeasure.

They are mudfish-like people who commit illegal activities but are actually protected by the law.

To be honest the news that the Silver Sun organization was destroyed in one day did bring some excitement.

The problem was that the heterogeneity of the case was too great.

This is an incident that cannot be identified even by magic tools that track magic.

Of course from Terryna’s perspective I couldn’t like it all that much.

“Do you think the key to this incident lies in the slums? But how can the abandoned people of the city wipe out an entire mafia?”

“It would have been like that in a normal slum.”

“That means it’s not normal right now.”

Enya told Terina everything she had discovered.

“Recently slums have been prospering at an incredible rate.”

    “A slum?”

“Not long ago the organization which was divided into three and three came together and began carrying out several projects simultaneously. “It’s even so successful that it continues to prosper.”

Terina crossed her arms and her eyes sparkled sharply.

“That’s strange. People who have been abandoned in the city do business because they have money? Could it be that the city has gone into redevelopment as part of a relief policy?”

    Otherwise it made no sense.

    But Enya shook her head.

“The city of Lederbelk still doesn’t care about the lower class. Rather they are the ones who want to disappear. It harms the beauty and image of the city. Surprisingly it was not the city council members or nobles who brought about this change but only one person.”

    “Only one person?”

An interesting smile appeared on Terina’s lips without her knowing.

This may be because the answer came back so unexpectedly even for her.

    “Who is that?”

“Owner. “People are calling him owner.”

“That can’t be the name. “Did you find out my real name?”

    Enya couldn’t answer.

Terina looked at me in surprise.

“Surprisingly. I can’t believe you haven’t figured it out yet. “Does that mean the other person hid his identity that well?”

“…I’m upset but it’s true. A man called the owner suddenly appeared in Lederbelk one day and took complete control of the behind-the-scenes world. “He is truly a ghost-like person with no trace of what he did in the past.”

It’s not just about taking control.

Beyond integrating small and medium-sized organizations into one we are continuing our aggressive actions by achieving successful business.

Because of this the surrounding commercial districts were tense.

“It’s a strange thing. “It’s incredible that one individual can make something like that possible.”

“You may not believe it but it’s true. “That owner definitely has something.”

Terina looked around the inside of the luxurious mansion.

The mafia’s headquarters became a haunted mansion in just one day.

The appearance of a person called the Owner and the collapse of Silver Sun which was in conflict with them.

Is there a connection between the two?

It was a hasty conclusion that he was the culprit but it was clear that he was a strong suspect.

“I need to meet you sometime.”

    “I will prepare right away.”

“Retrieve the artifact. The no-entry guard line remains in place. “We can’t let those newspaper reporters run wild.”

    Terina looked out the window.

There were already reporters gathered at the entrance to the mansion who could smell it.

Terina clicked her tongue at the sight.

“They’re coming so fast. “They’re like hyenas.”

At that moment Terina drew her sword like lightning and aimed it into the air.

    “All Captain?”

Enya and the knights are embarrassed.

But Terina stared into the empty space with her sharp gaze.

“Come out now. “Don’t hide yourself like a rat.”

    “As expected it’s Terina.”

At the same time a voice was heard from the empty space.

The thin veil of water that distorted the light disappeared revealing the person hiding inside.

“You have very sharp senses? “I wasn’t caught by any other driver.”

The moment she saw the woman smiling as if she was happy to see her Terina’s face lit up.

    “Casey!”

“huh. “It’s been a while Terina.”

    “Detective Casey?!”

Enya who belatedly recognized Casey also jumped up in surprise.

Terina immediately sheathed the sword she had drawn and walked up to Casey to shake his hand.

“I don’t know how many years it’s been since this! How have you been?”

“huh. I’m doing well as always. ah. Nice to meet you too driver Enya Joiners. “Is this the first time you saw it at the Kunst that day?”

“Oh yeah. It’s been a while. “Detective Casey.”

“Hey Casey. “Who is this person here?”

Terina belatedly realized that there was a blonde girl next to Casey.

    “What about this girl?”

“ah. Let me introduce you. “Terry this is my assistant Betty.”

“It’s Betty. “He is a great assistant who works hard to help the wayward Casey.”

Betty put her hand on her waist and said “Ahem.”

“Betty. This is Terry or Ryan Howl. “He is the Marquess of Ryan Howl and the current leader of the knights Night Crawl.”

“Nice to meet you. “Miss Betty.”

“Huh? Were you a nobleman? I’m sorry. “I don’t know.”

Enya and Casey smiled bitterly at Betty’s sudden change in attitude.

“So Casey. “What are you doing here?”

“For some reason. “Do detectives need a reason to go find a case?”

“…I see. But you passed it too. “This is an area off-limits to the general public.”

“So I sneaked in. And I’m not an ordinary person right? “He’s a nationally certified detective.”

    Casey narrowed one eye.

Beside her Betty muttered as if making an excuse.

    “I stopped him. “It’s all Casey’s fault.”

It wasn’t an excuse it was a way to sell Casey.

“…Well I don’t expect you to behave normally anymore. It would be nice if you could at least give me some advice. “If I had been wrong I would have swung the sword.”

“I’m sorry about that. But it was so interesting that I couldn’t control it. That’s right right? “A number of disappearances occurred in one day.”

Terina let out a small sigh as she realized she couldn’t hide it.

    “okay. “I guess so.”

“Looking at the reaction it seems like I wasted a lot of money. Do you know anything? “I wonder if I can be of any help.”

Those words shook Terina’s heart a little.

Casey Selmore was the only person she considered a close friend and a person of great talent.

He himself failed to find a clue but if it was Casey maybe.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to lean into that possibility.

But public and private life had to be clearly distinguished.

“I’m sorry. “No matter how much you do you can’t ask for help in this matter.”

    “Hmm. “That’s a shame.”

Casey actually didn’t expect much either.

She had already toured the incident scene sufficiently.

It was clear that this was not a case that could be reasoned about normally.

Casey instead turned his attention elsewhere.

“Do you have something more interesting than that?”

    “ah. “You mean this artifact?”

“Isn’t that an artifact created recently at the New Magic Tower? “It is a product that incorporates the memory storming phenomenon that has recently emerged in academia.”

    “As expected you know everything.”

“I just heard it over my shoulder. It looks like there are a few. “Can you lend me one of those?”

The knights’ eyes widened at Casey’s question.

This woman seemed close to the leader so I left her alone and there was nothing she couldn’t say.

When the knights showed unpleasant emotions Terina stopped them with a glance.

    “Actually this was the purpose.”

“I just looked at it and got a feeling. So what? “One is okay right?”

“It doesn’t matter if it’s just one thing.”

When Terina handed over the artifact in her hand the members headed out.

“Da Captain! No matter what it’s okay to carelessly hand over things to outsiders…!”

“It doesn’t matter. “Because she is not an ordinary outsider in the first place.”

When the leader Terina said that the members couldn’t complain anymore.

No matter what it was a decision made by the manager I respected the most so I thought there must be a reason for it.

Casey who actually received the artifact also had an unexpected reaction.

“Huh? “I thought it would bounce around a bit but they gave it to me right away?”

“Anyway you will do whatever it takes to take care of it. In that case it would be better to just hand it over.”

“what. “You know me too well.”

“You are so eccentric that it is easy to understand. “Considering what will happen if you don’t hand it over I think it would be cheaper to give it now.”

At those words Casey felt embarrassed and let out an awkward laugh.

Betty glared at Casey from the side and scolded him saying ‘How many accidents have you been causing?’

“Anyway I’ll give it to you so I’ll take it well.”

“okay. “Looking at your reaction it looks like you’re chasing something too.”

    “Well that’s right.”

“But what are you going to use that artifact for? “I guess it’s because of your personality that you won’t just take it.”

“Of course there is a place to use it. However I will explain the details later.”

Casey’s eyes were more serious than usual when he said that.

Terina could see the sincerity in her eyes.

“I see. “If you say that much I won’t ask any more questions.”

“Anyway it’s been a while since we met but it’s a shame we couldn’t talk for a long time.”

“Don’t worry. If you’re in this city it’s always possible. Next time let’s meet each other and resolve the issue.”

    “okay. “Then I’ll go first.”

Casey made a splash with those words.

In an instant her and Betty’s images disappeared like a mirage and nothing was left in their place.

Terina burst into laughter at the sight of him moving away.

The friend I met after a long time was still the same as before.

“let’s go. We do our job.”

    “yes!”

    * * *

Ludger fell into a deep sleep in his hideout.

It was a reaction using the power of God.

Hans and other members knew he was tired so they left him alone without waking him up.

Worried about Ludger they had too much work to do.

First of all they had to take over the business that Silver Sun was operating as soon as possible.

Analyzing the ledgers and tracing the source of the funds they spread around was usually not an easy task.

There were already some guys smelling the scent and moving around so it was purely a race against time.

After such a busy morning it was noon.

Ludger who thought he was going to sleep some more came downstairs.

    “older brother. “Are you awake?”

    “Welcome. “Owner.”

    “lily! “He slept so soundly!”

Hans and Violetta who were diligently analyzing the ledger and Seridan who was making fun of Hans next to him greeted him.

Instead of accepting the greeting Ludger stared out the distant window.

“older brother? “Why are you doing that?”

    “Get ready.”

    “yes? “What do you mean?”

    “A guest is coming soon.”

    Also a very annoying customer.

Knight Crawler a member of the Empire’s Intelligence Bureau.

They were coming a symbol of fear to the people in the back alleys.
