◈ Episode 134: The sword in the shadow (2)

Among the nobles the story of the first princess’s shadow was quite famous.

After the Marquis of Thetfern the de facto ruler of the military in the past was mysteriously killed in his fortress-like home the military under his command was torn apart.

However the clever nobles did not miss where the Marquis of Thetpern’s power had been absorbed.

‘That is First Princess Eileen von Exilion.’

Freuden couldn’t help but sneer inwardly.

The death of the Marquis of Thetfern was known to the public as a natural death due to old age but no one believed that to be true.

It was probably from then on.

Although she had ability she lacked limbs so her talent was revealed in earnest.

The 1st princess who roasted nobles with her overwhelming charisma and brilliant mind gradually interfered with finances and accomplished things that even the current emperor could not do without failure.

Even the nobles who were still wary of the first princess had no choice but to swear loyalty to her rebellious actions.

Not only was her ability an ability but it was also because she knew what happened to the nobles who tried to rebel against her.

The first princess who thought she had nothing had a sharper dagger than anything else.

And it was quietly waiting in the princess’s shadow to be wielded.

If he were to offend the 1st princess for no reason he never knew when a shadow blade would suddenly be thrust under his neck.

    Naturally the nobles were afraid.

    Can’t we just defend ourselves?

The opponent is the one who killed the Marquis of Teppern.

The Marquis of Teppern who had many enemies here and there was so cautious that he maintained tight security even when eating.

    Then he died.

He didn’t even die while wandering around outside but his body was found in his room in his mansion which was said to be the safest place.

Along with the bodies of his loyal subordinates.

Naturally the princess’s shadow reigned fear among the nobles.

There has been no news of the first princess’s shadow being active since that incident but all nobles know.

If she puts her mind to it the First Princess can pull out a dagger from her shadow at any time.

First princess Eileen who was not hindered by anyone gradually expanded her power and has now taken the position of an unwavering absolute power that no one can oppose.

Liné could not help but be surprised when she heard the whole story.

I heard that the 1st princess was dangerous and scary but as a commoner she couldn’t have known that there would be such a detailed story.

Naturally I realized why Erendir was treated like that even though she was a princess.

    “Senior… you worked hard.”

“As expected the only one who understands my feelings is Lee’s junior!”

Erendir looked deeply moved and hugged Linne. Liné struggled as if she was frustrated.

Freuden sighed and tried to dissuade Erendir.

“Let’s just stop there. “Line is having a hard time.”

“joy! Isn’t that what Line is like? yes?”

    “Yes yes~.”

    “see! “They say it’s okay!”

    “…ha.”

Freuden felt a headache coming on.

At the same time I wondered how Rine could become friends with that stubborn princess.

He was well aware that the Third Princess Erendir experienced countless failures and frustrations while trying to make friends in Seorn but that did not mean that the Third Princess would just date anyone.

Considering Linne’s personality Erendir would be a good person to get close to.

‘…How on earth did Line get close to the Third Princess?’

Aren’t commoners unable to even look at the princess let alone talk to her?

Even though this is Seorn where everyone is equal remnants of class remain and Erendir is not just a noble but a princess.

It must have been difficult to put the words together properly.

    ‘Isn’t that just the case?’

But if you think about it Line may have been nervous when she first saw her but she answered every question she was asked.

Now that I realize it again I laugh.

“Just do it in moderation. “All the food I brought will get cold.”

“oh! I see. “Shall we eat first and talk?”

“…I guess it suits your taste?”

“joy. What can I admit? “The Ulburg family’s cooking skills are considerable.”

    That’s a dish I made myself.

Freuden of course did not say that. I was caught taking care of the flower bed but I didn’t want people to know that I was cooking there myself.

And so the meal began again.

Unlike the time when there was no particular conversation between Freuden and Linne now Linne and Erendir were chatting to each other.

It was Erendir who mainly drove the story.

Freuden was saddened by the fact that his small resting place had become noisy but he was satisfied that it was not that bad and decided to move on quietly.

The topic of the conversation led by Erendir soon reached the Kunst incident she had experienced.

“So you don’t know how difficult it was at the Kunst auction house this time.”

“yes?! “Then sir you were caught up in the incident that happened there?”

    “Hoo.”

Freuden who had been quietly listening also showed interest as if this piqued his interest.

Erendir thought the opportunity had finally come and told a long story about what happened that day.

Especially at the part where the monster of Gévaudan appeared Liné took a deep breath.

“It was a truly horrible monster. It looks like it just crawled out of hell. “It had beast heads all over its body and its three heads let out a terrible roar.”

This part was the truth without any exaggeration.

Erendir still vividly remembers that scene when he closes his eyes.

    “I still don’t feel like I’m alive.”

“Still I’m really glad that my senior is safe.”

Erendir felt his heart beat violently in response.

The first friend I made listened to my story seriously and even worried about me.

Isn’t this the academy life she dreamed of?

“So what happened to that monster? Is he really dead? Or did you run away? “I heard that the Knights took it down. Is that true?”

    “Oh that’s…”

    Erendir was struggling to answer.

The Clockwork Knights under Lederbelk are known to have defeated the Gévaudan monster but in fact it was a man named James Moriarty who really defeated the Gévaudan monster.

However the name of James Moriarty was kept secret even after the incident was over.

Because Casey Selmore didn’t want it.

-The princess. The full story of this incident should not be known yet.

-…Are you telling me I have to hide the truth?

-I understand you say that. It is a good thing to follow your own sense of justice. But princess. I’m not in a good mood right now. look.

After the incident was resolved the sight of the Kunst auction house which was almost in ruins was visible.

And the images of injured people and citizens who are still terrified and frightened.

-People are afraid. If they learn that the person who killed the monster is a newly emerged big-time criminal the citizens’ anxiety will become even more severe.

-So Mr. Casey you are saying that the way to end the anxiety of citizens is to say that the city’s knights not criminals killed the monster.

-Sometimes a comfortable lie is better than an inconvenient truth.

Erendir could not bear to refute. From her perspective it was the only way to resolve this series of events.

-Moreover if you spread the rumor about James Moriarty and his gang members they will hide themselves in deeper darkness and hold their breath. Then even if you try to look for it you won’t be able to find it.

-…all right. I will keep this matter secret as well.

    -thank you.

Erendir who recalled the conversation at that time immediately responded to Rine.

“Of course the Clockwork Knights of which Lederbelk is proud stepped forward and solved the problem.”

My conscience prickled as I spoke but it was something I could not help.

Erendir who was trying to look around suddenly remembered seeing a familiar person at the Kunst auction house.

“Oh by the way I think I saw Mr. Ludger at the auction house that day.”

It may have been a long time since he only saw it in passing from afar but Erendir thought there was no way he could not recognize that unique atmosphere.

    “yes? “Mr. Ludger?”

    “Ludger Chelsea?”

The two people who were listening showed interest as if they had not expected that name to appear in this story.

“Hmm. It’s definitely true. “Because you can’t hide that unique atmosphere.”

“Why on earth did Mr. Ludger go there?”

“Well as a teacher there’s no reason why you can’t come to a place like that right? “Seeing as he went to work without any trouble afterward Mr. Ludger may have just stopped by and left early.”

    “Still something doesn’t feel right.”

    “Is that so?”

“yes. “Mr. Ludger has the image of not caring much about luxury goods or jewelry right?”

    There is definitely that feeling.

However Erendir could not hastily agree with Linne’s words.

There is always a difference between the outside and inside of a person.

“Now that I think about it Lin’s junior received the framework from Mr. Ludger right? “How was it?”

“Oh surprisingly it was nothing special.”

“Hasn’t Mr. Ludger called you separately before? “When implementing attribute elements.”

It was then that Freuden who had been quietly listening to the conversation between the two intervened.

“Wait a minute Rine. “A teacher named Ludger called you directly?”

“That’s right. “You don’t know how much I worried about Lee’s junior at that time.”

Instead it was Erendir who answered.

Freuden’s eyes turned to the schoolbag Linne was carrying.

Suddenly when I first met Line I remembered the book she hid from me.

‘That book back then. ‘I thought I saw it somewhere.’

Freuden had a strange feeling as if something had occurred to him.

    At that time Line said.

“ah. Come to think of it do you know what these days? “I heard that magazines have become popular among students recently.”

“magazine? ah! “I think I’ve heard that too.”

Line took out the magazine from her backpack and showed it to her.

For a moment Freuden’s eyes turned to the bag but when Rine said voila and showed him the magazine he had no choice but to naturally turn his head in that direction.

A magazine was literally a thin book that looked miscellaneous.

The cover was full of messy pictures and had the word No. 1 written on it.

    “What is that?”

When Freuden asked Rine answered with a bright smile.

“It’s a book recently published by Lederbelk. But it’s not an official publication so it’s a bit thin but it has a lot of interesting content.”

    “Interesting information?”

“oh. By any chance Freuden you don’t even know about magazines that are popular among students these days?”

Erendir grinned at the thought that he had finally caught the number. Freuden nodded and shook his head.

I didn’t know it during the formal ceremony but I was not tired as usual when I encountered the true personality of the Third Princess Erendir.

“So what is this famous magazine?”

“You can think of it as a book containing miscellaneous stories. “Like a newspaper it contains a variety of news big and small.”

“Then it’s no different from a newspaper is it?”

“no. It’s completely different. Most newspapers are published by newspaper companies so they distort the content to suit their own tastes. However this magazine talks from a more neutral perspective. Of course this means that the publisher of this magazine put a lot of effort into writing it.”

    “Is that all?”

“Of course not. “There is other information that is not covered in newspapers and the real reason this magazine is so popular is because of the various short stories included in the latter half!”

Freuden reacted indifferently saying that there was nothing special.

However contrary to what Freuden thought lightly these short stories were quite popular among students.

Most of the books published on the market are formal or difficult to express in lengthy language.

    The same goes for novels.

Literary novels were so complicated to read that even nobles who tried to force themselves to be formal often gave up reading them.

The short stories included in the magazine were just the opposite.

It received favorable reviews from the public for its short concise sentences and refreshing plot.

Recently its popularity has been rising rapidly to the extent that even noble students have heard the rumors and are reading them one by one.

Because simple yet intuitive short stories are much more fun than literary novels that are difficult to read.

It even had the charm of cutting off content at a critical moment to make people look forward to the next content so many people were already waiting for the next magazine.

‘There are so many different things coming out these days. ‘I guess I’ll read it too.’

Freuden held off on evaluating the magazine putting it to one side.

Suddenly he remembered a name and frowned slightly.

    ‘Ludger Chelsea.’

I’ve been hearing his name often lately.

In reality all I saw was what I saw in Dalian and from a bit further away. Even so I didn’t pay much attention to it.

The only thing I remember is that the teacher Ludger Cellisi had a very solemn atmosphere.

He hadn’t paid much attention to it before but recently he heard the name so often that Freuden recalled the face of Ludger he had seen back then.

And then I saw a strangely familiar face.

    ‘I think I’ve seen that teacher somewhere….’

    Freuden’s eyes became sharp.
