Chapter 0024 – What Will Happen Will Happen – The Absolute Return
by GreatBrother(위대한 다오 형제)I still have some time before I officially assume the position of Yellow Springs Pavilion Master. During this time, I intend to take care of one thing first.
I intend to give future Ghostbusters members the best possible treatment. Loyalty doesn’t pay the bills, and I’m going to reward them for their efforts with a generous monthly salary.
Life is short, so let’s have fun. As long as they don’t gamble, they can spend as much as they want, and I won’t interfere if they buy a house and land or spend money like that.
Of course, all of this assumes that I have enough money. And I, for one, happen to know of an opportunity to make a lot of money at this time of year.
I left a note for Li An, telling her that I was going out, and then quietly left the Heavenly Demon God Sect.
My rebirth was to change my destiny.
Although I spent most of my time running around trying to collect the materials for the Soul Return Technique, I always kept in mind those things that were vital to me. Over the past few decades, I knew many of the things that had happened in the jianghu as well as I did, especially those opportunities that I could capitalize on.
This time, the place I’m going to is a small town near Wuyi Mountain in Fujian. There, something will happen that I absolutely cannot miss.
I executed the Rapid Steps of the Four Steps of the Wind God all the way and darted towards my destination. Although my cultivation level was still shallow, my understanding of this light skill grew deeper as I continued to practice.
When resting, I would look out over the rolling hills in the distance and recall the experiences of my past life. Whenever the gusty wind swept up the sand and dust, I would get up and continue my journey.
In order to get there the day that event occurred, I would sometimes travel day and night, and sometimes slow down and leisurely enjoy the scenery along the way.
With that, I traveled all the way to the town below Wuyi Mountain.
I once heard a story from an old geezer.
When he was young, he ran a kangaroo agency and made a living by earning commissions. Often, after drinking, he would tell me about a tragic incident that happened back then that he still remembers. And this incident, happened today, in this town.
I asked a roadside vendor about it and soon found the kangaroo agency.
It was a dilapidated house located at the edge of the town, in which a dozen or so Jianghu people were gathered. Some of them were napping against the wall, some were polishing their weapons, and others were in groups, talking in low voices. My arrival didn’t attract their attention, they just casually swept a glance at me and continued to do their own things.
I walked over to a table in the corner and looked at the owner who was writing something with his head buried in his hands.
The moment I saw him, my heart was mixed. He was the Lin Qiu who had told me about this back then.
“What’s the job?” I asked.
Lin Qiu raised her head and glanced at me, “Are you new here? Who introduced you?”
“Big brother Xu Guang asked me to come.”
“What’s your relationship with Xu Guang?”
“We’ve done things together before.”
“What is it?”
“At Hengshan, I helped him.”
“Is that the one that dealt with the Songshan sect?”
“No, it’s against the Nanyue sect.”
I knew that he was testing me. This place was a mixed bag, he had to be careful. But I was prepared.
“Since Xu Guang introduced me, I’m relieved. Can you go on a mission today?”
“Sure.”
“It just so happens that there’s a big deal going on today, and you’ve come just in time. Go and wait over there, and we’ll set off when everyone is ready.”
I walked over to his designated seat and sat down, the jungle people around me were casting curious glances at me, but I ignored them.
After about an hour, all the people involved in this mission had arrived, fifteen in total.
As I recall, Lin Qiu said that there were more than fifty people involved in this incident back then. It seems that the rumors in the jianghu really do get more exaggerated the more they are spread.
However, fifteen people was quite a large number. Usually, a mission from a jianghu agency would only require two or three people, seven or eight at most. Unless it was a major event that was a hundred thousand times more urgent, no one would hire so many people.
“For this mission, Brother Liang Dang will lead the team.” Lin Qiu said as he pointed at a stout man.
Liang Dang, a veteran who had been in the jungle for many years.
“Although the reward this time is generous, the mission is also dangerous. Whoever dares to play tricks on me, don’t blame me for being merciless!” Liang Dang looked around the crowd and said in an icy tone.
He walked up to me and looked me up and down, “You were introduced to me by Xu Guang?”
“Exactly.”
“How are you holding up?”
“How would you like to compare and contrast?” I asked rhetorically, a hint of provocation in my tone.
“Kid, don’t be too arrogant! Watch out for your head moving!” A cold light flashed in Liang Dang’s eyes.
I felt his murderous intent, but I didn’t want to cause trouble.
“Don’t worry, I’ll obey orders. I just want to get the money, anything else, I’m not interested.”
“I hope you do what you say you’re going to do.”
With that, we set off in force, a party of fifteen, on horseback and in a wagon.
After a couple of setbacks, we finally made it to our destination.
There, we met the targets we were trying to protect – a mother and child.
It was a beautiful woman of great charm, and a boy of seven or eight years old, with the shadow of the beautiful woman vaguely visible between her eyebrows.
“Our mission, is to escort the mother and son duo to Nanping, the faster the better.” Liang Dang said to us.
To be able to send out fifteen jianghu people to escort them, it was evident that the identity of this mother and son was extraordinary. It also showed that they were facing great danger.
The boy in the wagon eyed me curiously; it was a handsome, cute kid. I smiled and waved at him, and he bowed his head shyly.
I could tell that he was a cheerful and well-bred child. The beautiful woman nodded slightly to me and then lowered the curtain. Anxiety and uneasiness were written all over her face.
The carriage started slowly, and we rode on, escorting the carriage between us, as we galloped southward.
We didn’t stop to rest until the horses were exhausted.
Liang Dang arranged for people to feed the horses while we sat on the ground and ate dry food. The beautiful woman and the child had special food.
For this mission, our reward is twice as much as usual, and Liang Dang, the one leading the way, is sure to take even more. That’s why he’s so nervous, afraid of making any mistakes.
“No one knows when the next meal will be served, so all eat more for me!” Liang Dang said loudly.
