Chapter 0015: Because They’re All the Same Ugly-Absolute Returns
by GreatBrother(위대한 다오 형제)With a puzzled look on his face, Xu Dalong took the dead crow and followed me out.
“Hang them up.”
Looking at Xu Dalong’s questioning eyes, I firmly said, “Just hang it in the most conspicuous place.”
I had Xu DaLong hang the dead crow in the center of the corridor where the members of the Demon Army most often pass through.
As the news spread, members of the Demon Army rushed to gather around. Some had curious faces, but more were furious and cursing.
“Damn! What is this?”
“Obscure! What’s the point of hanging dead crows here?”
“Can the investigating officer do whatever he wants?”
“Damn Yellow Springs Court!”
“呸呸呸,今天真是倒霉透顶!”
“I think this hallway is just right for hanging corpses, preferably of the shredded variety!”
The numbers representing their respective brigades were embroidered on the clothes on their chests. I could tell at a glance that the members of the first brigade who had clashed with us at the entrance earlier had cursed the most.
They didn’t name names, but I knew that they were cursing the Yellow Springs Pavilion, which meant they were cursing me.
As the atmosphere was tense, one person finally couldn’t hold back and stood out.
“You guys are going too far!”
His voice echoed down the hallway.
“Who said that? I see you all look alike, one uglier than the other.”
The crowd glared angrily as a man stepped forward.
“Demon Army Third Brigade Captain Zhang Hu!”
Zhang Hu was the most physically imposing person in the demon army, he was so muscular that he almost burst through his clothes, and there was a hideous scar on his face that made people shudder.
Xu Dalong’s voice rang in my ears:
–The third captain, Zhang Hu, has the highest martial arts skills of all the captains and has a fiery temper.
Zhang Hu’s aura was indeed powerful, and everyone present was compared to him.
“Captain Zhang, do you have any complaints?”
“Do I have to say it? What’s the point of hanging this unlucky thing in a place where people come and go?”
“Better than throwing it on the bed, right?”
“Don’t make trouble out of nothing, hurry up and catch the person behind the scene and punish him severely!”
I looked at Zhang Hu silently, he knew that I wouldn’t compromise easily. He released a powerful demonic aura and pressed towards Xu Dalong and me. I immediately felt difficulty in breathing, worthy of being the strongest of the Demon Army’s Great Captains.
“You have a point, Investigator Xu, take the item down.”
“Yes.”
Xu Dalong removed the dead crow, and the onlookers of the demon race burst into laughter.
“Coward!”
“Indeed, I am in arrears!”
“Don’t even look at what kind of place this is, how dare you spread your wildness here!”
I ignored their taunts and abuse and turned to go back to my room.
Just as he entered, Xu Dalong couldn’t help but ask, “Why did you hang the dead crows? And why did you compromise so easily when you knew they would object?”
He seemed to feel humiliated and his face turned red.
“To find out who wrote the whistleblower letter.”
Xu Dalong was at a loss.
“You already know who it is?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Huh?”
Xu Dalong’s eyes widened, obviously not expecting me to give an affirmative answer.
“How did you know?”
I looked at the two dead crows and said, “Thanks to them, now, take them and give them a proper burial.”
The next day, the investigation officially began.
I summoned the heads of the three brigades of the Demon Army. Zhang Hu, who had come out of the woodwork yesterday because of the dead crow incident, was naturally disgruntled.
“What do you mean by that?”
“What do you mean? Haven’t you heard that I’ve come to investigate?”
“Then why start with our third brigade? Why not check the other brigades first?”
“I like it.”
“Are you deliberately targeting us because of what happened yesterday?”
“What was it yesterday?”
Zhang Hu clenched his teeth and stared at me angrily.
“From now on, you’re going to turn in all your records, including your recent whereabouts, and the money changer’s records, and I’m going to check them all.”
The members of the three large teams of Demons were in an uproar. Ordinary people being deliberately investigated could be found out, let alone the Demon Army. It was no exaggeration to say that the kindest person here could be a mountain king when put outside.
Zhang Hu clapped his hands.
“You guys are too much!”
“Bang!”
He slapped the table in front of me.
“I warn you, don’t go too far, or I’ll sue you for treason!”
Upon hearing the word “rebel”, several Third Brigade Demons rushed forward to dissuade Zhang Hu.
“Captain, calm down!”
“There’s nothing to say to them!”
I added fuel to the fire, “Let’s start by checking you out.”
“Good! Fight me one-on-one if you have the guts! All of you get out!”
Zhang Hu’s demonic aura surged around him.
His men rushed to calm him down.
“Captain, calm down!”
“All out, I’m fine.”
“Yes.”
They glared at me fiercely before retreating. It was obvious that they were loyal to Zhang Hu.
After everyone had left, Zhang Hu said coldly, “You’ll regret it.”
The scars on his face looked even more hideous.
I looked at him calmly, suddenly lowered my voice, and asked, “How long are you going to test me?”
Zhang Hu froze.
“What are you talking about?”
“You wrote the whistle-blower letter, didn’t you?”
Zhang Hu’s pupils shrunk violently.
“What are you babbling about?”
But he wasn’t very good at lying, his eyes flickered and his tone began to tremble, and finally, he admitted it.
“How did you know?”
His tone was low, as if he had changed.
“Yesterday, you clearly could have stayed out of it, but you went out on a limb, nothing more than trying to dispel the Demon Sovereign’s suspicions.”
“Exactly.”
“Moreover, your men are the most disciplined of all the ranks, and they were the only ones who didn’t curse or scoff when they hung the dead crow. Also just now, they all stood up to speak for you, it’s obvious that you rule your troops well. Someone like you surely cannot tolerate corruption within the organization.”
Actually, it wasn’t through those details that I was sure he did it.
The only reason I knew that it was Zhang Hu who had written the report letter was because of the transmission that Xu Dalong had given me earlier.
–The third captain, Zhang Hu, has the highest martial arts skills of all the captains and has a fiery temper.
When I heard that, I remembered an incident that happened in my past life.
At that time, a great captain in the devil army was killed, and I was impressed because I heard that that great captain had the highest martial arts skill among all the great captains. I wondered at the time, since he had such high martial arts skills, how could he have been killed?
I can almost conclude that that slain brigadier was Zhang Hu. He must have been brutally killed because he reported the crimes of the demon army.
Sure enough, the person who wrote the whistle-blowing letter was Zhang Hu.
“I wasn’t sure if the whistleblower letter was valid, so I didn’t write too much detail.”
He was worried that the Yellow Springs Pavilion was already under the control of the Blood Heavenly Blade Demon.
“I didn’t think that you would come to investigate in person.”
