    Chapter Index

“Is my physical condition okay?” Zhu Zongyu asked.

“Just tell me if you can’t walk, as long as you do what you can and don’t force yourself, there’s no problem.” Wei Ruo replied.

    “Good.”

So Wei Ruo got up and led Zhu Zongyu in the direction of the farmland in the manor.

The path at the edge of the field was fairly flat, and Wei Ruo’s pace wasn’t too fast, so Zhu Zongyue could barely keep up in his current condition.

Zhu Zongyue looked at the vast fields and the scattered people busy in the fields, and then looked at the person walking in front of him.

For some reason, the mood was extraordinarily calm.

It wasn’t as if Zhu Zongyue had never seen farmland and cultivating farmers before, but in the past, it was from an overlooking perspective, and today, with Duke Xu, it was a different viewing angle.

All the people we met along the way greeted Wei Ruo enthusiastically and called out “Dongjia” with smiles on their faces.

Just by listening to their voices as they spoke Zhu Zongyu could feel the status of this proprietor in their hearts.

One of the women was sitting on the ridge holding a two or three year old child, while her husband was busy in the field next to her.

The man’s hands were red from freezing, his nose was red, and he couldn’t stop exhaling white air from his mouth, but there was a smile on his face and every now and then he glanced back at his wife and children behind him.

When Wei Ruo approached, the man stopped and bowed towards Wei Ruo, “Dong家.”

The little boy in the woman’s arms also smiled at Wei Ruo and childishly shouted, “Good proprietor.”

The voice was soft and sticky, and the somewhat flushed little face was indescribably cute.

Such a smile was very infectious, not only Wei Ruo, Zhu Zongyu could not help but soften his gaze when he saw it.

Not only that, Zhu Zongyu also realized that the little boy and the couple did not show any expression of horror when they saw themselves with bandages on their faces.

He knew it was probably because he had followed Duke Xu around, and out of their trust in him, they also naturally believed that he, a stranger in a scary costume, wasn’t a bad guy either.

Wei Ruo walked up to the little boy and slipped him a piece of dried sweet potato.

The little boy took the dried sweet potatoes and didn’t bother to eat them himself, shoving them into his own mother’s mouth first.

The mother resumed shoving the dried sweet potatoes back into the little boy’s mouth, smiling and saying that his mother wouldn’t eat them.

And only then did the little boy take a small nibble.

Wei Ruo smiled and stuffed two more pieces of dried sweet potatoes into the boy’s mother’s hand before turning around and continuing to walk.

When Zhu Zongyu saw Wei Ruo’s smile, he felt that his smile was even warmer than the little boy’s smile.

Zhu Zongyu slowly followed, “A few days ago I heard Steward Yu say that you protected them and allowed them to survive this particularly cold winter, and today I have seen with my own eyes that it is true.”

“I’m not that great, I’m hiring them, they’re meant to work for me, if they’re lazy I’m going to kick them out without mercy, we’re taking what we need, it’s not like I’m doing a good deed.” Wei Ruo replied.

“But you are more capable than the average person, and more willing to help people in trouble. If you only have ideas but no ability, in my opinion, you’re a mediocre person; if you have the ability but not this heart, you’re someone like Boss Fan, and Mr. Xu is both.” Zhu Zongyue evaluated Wei Ruo.

“Mr. Zhu thinks too well of me, I just love money, I just think about how to maximize my benefits, I’m in the same category as Boss Fan.” Wei Ruo said.

“If Duke Xu just loved money, he wouldn’t have saved me.” Zhu Zongyu was certain of his judgment.

“Maybe I was betting that you were a rich boy, that I would get a good profit for saving you. And it turns out I gambled right.” Wei Ruo replied.

“Why would Mr. Xu deliberately discredit himself? You are not someone who only seeks wealth.” Zhu Zongyu said with certainty.

    “Whatever you want.”

Whatever the man thought of her, there would be no relationship between them when he was healed anyway.

The two of them walked for a little while longer, and a not-so-pleasant smell wafted through the air.

“What are they doing?” Zhu Zongyu inquired.

“Fertilizing the soil, most of the farming has stopped now at this time of the year, but you can do something to improve the soil, so that when the seeds are sown in the coming spring there will be a chance for a good harvest.” Wei Ruo explained.

    “What fat?”

“Farmer’s fertilizer, and some melons, fruits, vegetables, straws, grasses and trees after rotting mixture.” Wei Ruo explained, knowing that Zhu Zongyue was there because the smell was unpleasant, so he added, “To them these things that emit a foul odor are the hope of life, from decay to new life.”

“From decay to new life ……,” Zhu Zongyu said thoughtfully.

Wei Ruo smiled and continued to lead Zhu Zongyue for a while.

Because of Zhu Zongyue’s physical condition, Wei Ruo did not walk for too long, and after two quarters of an hour, he brought him back to the hut where he was staying.

And then Steward Yu brought today’s medicine.

Smelling the bitter flavor of the medicine, Zhu Zongyue looked at Wei Ruo: “Mr. Xu, can you still have what you just gave to that little boy.”

    “You mean dried sweet potatoes?”

“Yeah, that one’s supposed to be sweet, I want to taste it after I drink my medicine.”

    “Could be.”

Wei Ruo generously took out a piece of dried sweet potato from the bag and placed it next to Zhu Zongyu’s medicine bowl.

Zhu Zongyu then picked up the bowl of medicine and drank it down in small sips.

It wasn’t that he was afraid of the pain and drank slowly, it was that he couldn’t move drastically with the injury on his face.

Once he finished the medicine, he put the dried sweet potato to his mouth and took a small bite.

“It sure smells sweet.” Zhu Zongyu’s expression looked satisfied.

Wei Ruo looked at him like this, so he simply gave him two more pieces.

Zhu Zongyue then pulled out one or two pieces of broken silver and placed them on the table, “Since Mr. Xu is the one who is trying to make money, it’s not a good idea to let Mr. Xu go against the purpose of what he’s doing.”

Wei Ruo of course nonchalantly took the silver.

Money doesn’t pay son of a bitch!

    ###

After the twentieth day of the Lunar New Year, classes were completely suspended, and Mr. Wang Caiwei had to leave early to return to her hometown to celebrate the New Year.

Xu Tongzhi’s family is the same situation, the school is closed, the ladies of the family also got free, stopped to help the family to prepare for the New Year.

Twelve or thirteen year old girls have to start learning to manage the center feed things with the main mother of the family, and there are especially many things to learn at the New Year’s Eve.

But Wei Ruo didn’t intend to follow Yun to learn this, not to mention that these few days are the busy time for the marinade store, because many people prepare for the New Year’s goods, prepare for the New Year’s Eve dinner, will buy some marinade in advance to prepare.

Wei Ruo has also introduced marinated duck goods on top of the original: marinated duck neck, marinated duck wings and marinated duck legs.

The brined duck goods are now selling better than the original brined pork sales, with 20 to 30 ducks being sold in a day. For this reason, going to the food market every morning to buy ducks is not stable enough.

In order to find a suitable duck supply channel, Wei Ruo these days ran through the entire capital city near the countryside, some contact negotiation after the temporary set a few places as a supply of ducks.
